I was told to avoid anything other than shuttles or local buses as these are quite cheap. We used shuttle from airport and buses around Waikiki. Everywhere around Waikiki or even at the hotel, speak to tour concierge and they will point you in right direction. Tour concierge at Aston Waikiki Sunset was a fantastic source of information for us.

We usually take a taxi, which costs about $60 including tip. It's cheaper than renting a car and having to pay for parking at the hotel and valet charges if you go somewhere to eat etc.. In addition, we found we can walk everywhere in Waikiki within an hour and enjoy the sites.
