Let me begin by saying that I do not resent the right for workers to take industrial action. My family recently stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki, but unfortunately the majority of its staff were on strike with many of the hotel services not available due to the action. We found it poor form to find out that the strike had been going on for over 28 days. A courtesy email informing us beforehand that services in the hotel were not available would have been nice. When we complained, we were rudely told that we were welcome to stay somewhere else. When we asked to be compensated, the hotel begrudgingly removed the resort tax. Things only got worse when the kids were met by protesters outside the pool and the beach. They were taunting the guests by telling them how stupid they were to be wasting their money on a hotel with no services. Our kids were quite intimidated by the mob. Things only got worse with the rooms. They were not made up or cleaned, with the persistent rumble of jackhammers lasting most of the day and irritating the guests. The breakfast in the club lounge consisted of stale Costco food served on paper plates and plastic cups. The food also ended up giving me and several other guests a bowel problem. The evening drinks were a disaster, as no staff could help as guests attempted to pour their own beers from the overgased draft beer system. When we asked for bottled beer, we were told that it was not available and we have to pay extra. The management of the resort need to have a good hard look themselves and the way that they have handled the strike. The union need to have a look at the way that they have conducted themselves, as I am sure that many guests will not come back in the future. Not a good look for the resort or Hawaii, and I am extremely disappointed that we had wasted a week in the hotel.

The hotel is nice as far as location, view and pool. The beach is tiny or almost nonexistent because it is also the landing for a huge catamaran. The rooms are run down but I hear they are set to renovate starting next month. I am sure the normal service is much better than what I experienced because this hotel is unfortunately one of those dealing with a labor strike. They don't even give out leis anymore but you can buy them for $20.

We were there 4 nights and had to go elsewhere for food since there was one very pricy buffet operating at half mass (but not 1/2 price). Our rooms were not cleaned any of the days for lack of staff. You have to ask for clean towels. The bar and pool close at 8 even on weekends and a drink will cost you $13.50 for a small plastic cup. You have to empty your own wastebasket and get toilet paper and such out of a box by the elevator. The last night we were there the picketing laborers were demonstrating late at night on the property out by the pool and we could hear them loud and clear chanting they wanted their share.

Even if I could have gotten past all this... but the last 2 nights my mother, son and I were bit by what have been identified as bed bug bites all over our legs, hips, feet and but and some on the upper body as well. Super gross. I do not recommend this place unless you want to leave disappointed and itchy. (please see for yourself pictures also posted)

Stayed 3 nights in an ocean front room during the strike. The only positives: the replacement staff were unfailingly pleasant, and the location near Waikiki Beach is great. Negatives: rooms are dark, dingy, they smell bad, and they are so so dated it’s just depressing. Picketers were very loud and began chanting with amplification at 4:30 am, making all street side rooms except very high floors uninhabitable (even with AC fan on high).

The front desk staff (again, super pleasant) seem not to be able to manage the reservation systems. I have checked out and still don’t have a corrected bill, my stay still isn’t showing up for credit to my loyalty account, and I have gold elite status. The fact that our room wasn’t ready until 7 pm on arrival was the least of our problems with this hotel.

Services are very limited during the strike, which is fine but means this feels more like a Holiday Inn and not at all like a luxury hotel.

Regardless of the strike, this hotel has an excellent location on the beach in Waikiki, but clearly needs substantial refreshing. The hotel corridors are dark and dingy; the rooms have not been updated in some time. Friends of ours had a suite, which was lovely, but the other rooms were dark, not large, and could use refurbishing. The strike was an interesting counterpoint; the substitute staff tried very hard - but I would love to see new carpeting and a coat of fresh paint at the least - it has been decades.

We recently stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki. Expecting a lovely luxury 5-star hotel, we were rather disappointed. The entrance to the hotel is very busy and frankly no-one bothering to take your luggage to the front desk, you have to navigate yourself through the main walkway through to Reception. Check-in staff were friendly and again, no-one to help with luggage to your room. Not what I expect from this hotel group! The rooms are comfy in space, we had a balcony and ocean view over Waikiki and towards Diamond Head, very lovely. The rooms are very basic and frankly in dire need of a makeover and brought into the 21st Century. The bathrooms are small with a shower over the bath and a shower curtain. And for all us foreign visitors to the USA, be prepared to pay extra on top of what you have already paid for your room. They charge a Room Tax between USD30-50 per night. You also have to pay extra for a pool cabana USD500 per day, sunbed with cover USD200 per day. Go to the beach, it costs nothing. Just as a note, we also experienced the hotel before and after the strike, and no assistance with luggage was prior to the strike. During the recent strike all the staff we encountered were very nice and helpful and were trying their best to accommodate everyone and make their stay as pleasant as possible.

Aloha lidiar323, We appreciate your comments on your recent stay with us here at Sheraton Waikiki. I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment in your stay. We do have our bell desk available to assist our guests with luggage all the way to guest rooms so I'm sorry to hear that this service may not have been easily available when you checked in with us. Our daily resort charge, which is applicable to all guests, provides many daily guest amenities and resort activities such as our lei making, hula dancing, and ukulele classes--all of which I do hope you had a chance to enjoy while you were here with us. I am happy to share with you that we do have a rooms refresh scheduled in the near future and do hope that you may have the opportunity to enjoy our new rooms once this is complete. Thank you for choosing Sheraton Waikiki. All the best, Mari K. Sheraton Waikiki Guest Experience Team

We were never offered anything to compensate for the issues. The strikers get right in at the gate entrance below the rooms and use megaphones an beat drums until 10 pm.
