We are a budget guest house/mini eco resort. We are on the edge of a village our rear faces towards the Karst mountains. We are located next door to the beautiful and expensive Vieng Tara Hotel. We have a variety of rooms some are simple basic timber frame and bamboo bungalows for people who want a more authentic SE Asian experience and we do have more conventional masonry rooms for those who need them. The main appeal of our place is the location, the views and of course our Garden which at times is full of butterflies. Early wet season is best for the butterflies. I recognise that we may not be what everyone is looking for but many people love us..

Very happy with our bungalow overlooking a stream with view of mountains and greenery! Extended twice.
Basic but clean room with hot water and mosquito net. Much nicer then the loud and pretty bleak main town.
Good price, great balcony. It rained for two day but was very happy to read in a hammock with some cats. There are a lots of cats that you can cuddle that we became quite attached to after a few days.

You have to pay to cross the river bridge but not expensive and there is a free one 10 minutes up the river.
Pizza Luca a few minutes away does great food.
Opposite the front there is a place to rent bikes, scooters and get laundry done.
Would return.

Loved this place! We had a bamboo hut with just a fan (but a private bathroom) and our deck looked directly over country side to karst mountains, cows and butterflies. Peaceful and serene, the food was good and as we are low maintenance travellers we got the service we needed with no bother The owner is a self confessed grumpy old man and a delight to talk to. If you’re looking for tourist free and quiet and a taste of how Vang Vieng used to be this is it.

We had a wonderful stay at Maylyn. A beautiful room with magnificent view, excellent food on request for breakfast/ lunch - and so tranquil. Ban and Joe are excellent hosts and extremely kind. This was much appreciated as I was not well on arrival and Ban went out of her way to ensure all was well and that we could stay longer as needed- which was very much appreciated.

My hotel in Luang Probang called ahead to say that we would be arriving late as we would take the night bus down to Vang Vieng. We were told that this would not be a problem and that there wasn't even a need to book ahead as they had rooms.

When we arrived there was a member of staff asleep near the gate who woke up and let us in, he asked if we'd called ahead and I said I had. We were shown to a room at 5AM and I thought nothing more of it until 11AM when I got up and met the owner (an English guy) who looked at me like something he'd just scraped off the bottom of his sandal and demanded to know why we'd arrived so late and woken him and his wife up. His tone was so rude that I immediately told him that if that was his attitude I would leave (I may have used slightly stronger language) and went to turn back to my room and collect my bags. This prompted the guy to square up to me and get very aggressive, before then backing down as he seemed to realize that what he was doing was totally unprofessional.

He wanted to make a mends so I suggested that if as a gesture of good will he did not charge us the 50000 kip for the 5 hours we had stayed in a room from 5 - 10AM, I was happy to start over again. A reasonable suggestion I thought. To my amazement the man scoffed that his wife would not allow this, I decided to pay the money and leave. I can only imagine that this guy is used to dealing with drunk teenagers who got to VV to party and thinks he can talk to people however he likes.

I am willing to concede that had I not have just been on a 12 hour overnight bus ride I may have handled the whole incident a little more calmly myself. However, in 3 months in SE Asia I have never been made to feel so unwelcome anywhere and this is the only time I've got genuinely angry about anything, and it was a fellow countryman who made it that way!

1. If the message from our hotel didn't get through, that's not my fault.
2. We were very quiet when we arrived and if they didn't want to let us in they should have just said so.
3. You work in hospitality, early starts, late nights and generally being 'hospitable' come with the job, I've done it.
4. There are tons of bungalows to stay in in VV, we chose yours and you made us unwelcome.
5. The customer is always right.

If you want to stay somewhere friendly go to Paradise bungalows just over the bamboo bridge. It's run by Laos people and they want you there.

First off there was no booking at this guest house that night. However when we woken at 4.30 am my wife got up got dressed and went downstairs to see what the disturbance was . She got a key and showed the guests to a clean room. No problem there. The following morning I met the what I presumed to be the guest in the restaurant .the following brief conversation took place :- me "are you the guy that arroved in the middle of the night?" " yes 4.30 actually" [though he now claims 5 am] me " how come you came here at 4.30?" " we had a booking" me " Booking ?who did you talk to when you made the booking ?" "I dont know our hotel made the booking" me "thats strange because neither my wife nor I know anything about it " I thought for a moment and then said "maybe you are in the wrong Guest house" well there are four guest houses in Vang Vieng with similar sounding names Molina ,Malany, Maylay and of course Maylyn it was not an unreasonable observation but what happened next beggars belief.... The guest then shouts across the restaurant "If thats you attitude I think I'll [profanity] off right now!!" So first swear word and first aggression from the guest I will admit to quick temper and I was furious .this is my house and dont talk to me like that .Up to that point I thought it was two adults having an informal chat about a slightly annoying and puzzling situation .Now suddenly Im in a row. I forced my self to calm and then I let the guest lecture me about the hospitality Industry and his experience . there were a few more milder expletives in that rant too , Oh yes I was aggressive and squared up Oh really ?? Im about 30 years older and six inches shorter than this guest .Actually after the first 10 seconds I was crawling. I tried to placate him ..He wasnt unwelcome ..he could stay.. he could have our best bungalow Im sorry we got off to a bad start ...He then produced his deal If I gave him the previous night free then he would condescend to stay here for another two nights. Well that looks suspiciously like a bribe to me but as bribes go it wasnt a big bribe about 4 pounds yes thats right about 4 pounds to avoid all this. I should have paid up Interesting our guest house is terrible but 4 pounds sterling would have made it good I dont have trouble with drunk teenagers, yuppies on the cheap are much more problematic and as for his five clever points 1 sorry sir but it was your responsibility to see the message got through 2 if we hadn't let you in then you would be complaining about that anyway that wasn't a problem 3 This is a cheap family run guest house in a third world country please dont lecture me about the hospitality industry 4 yes there are many guest houses in Vang Vieng thank you for choosing us its a pity you didnt stay longer you might have enjoyed us. 5 you sir have got it all wrong I should have been more tactful with my questions but I wanted you to stay here

It was a horrible experience what we lived there during our three days stay. Despite the good location and views (the room were quite normal though), the irish owner was so rude with us and other people staying there (seems that only english and irish people are welcome!), always doing really bad taste jokes!! there are other very nice places in Vang Vieng owned by locals.

well this is a mystery I have tried to contact this person but he is not responding .. So I am calling fake! Nathan says he is from the London however he repeats what a french person said in a previous review don't go to Maylyn if you are not Irish or English. Well Nathan London is in England. So wouldnt that make you English?? I know that's where I grew up. I was born in the republic but we moved to London when I was a child. so much for my Irishness. So Nathan can you please let me know what bad thing I did to you because I havn't got a clue what your problem is.

Delightful idyllic backwater offering grateful reprieve from the sore sighted developments of the town centre. Whilst capitalist greed and the non stop production line of spotty gap year students has ripped the soul out of this cultural crossroads, the other side of Vang Vieng may prove a heavenly blessing to travelers more in touch with nature and traditional surroundings of wonder and beauty.
Joe's garden and fantastic range of wooden bungalows have to be seen to believed... all in all Maylyn is like a little world of its own, a true dedication to rural serenity. Adventurers stop on by, you won't be disappointed... and make sure you get your name down early for the legendary fish supper.

I stayed in Maylyn GH for a night and got this very rude remarks from the host himself. I was very suprised as I have read in the previous reviews, how friendly and helpful he is. For me, he is just plain sarcastic and rude, with unpleasent kind of humor, cursing and saying some foul words for his own liking. I decide to check-out the next day but was so stupid to accidentally left my small purse in the room. I came back the next day to find that they did found the purse and returned it to me but with no money in it! They insisted that there is no money in the purse and the purse was actually thrown in the rubbish bin which I found to be ridiculous coz why would u pick-up something from the rubbish bin and keep in the counter, The staff were unhonest and told lies. They took the whole USD100 in it. Luckily I still had some money left or else.....But at that time, Mr Joe was good enough to asked and scolded his staff for the missing money.I knew it was my fault but then thinking about it, it is actually quite scary when the staff of a guest house actually took guest money. How to stay at such a place for a long time? This had left me with some really bad impression of this place. Other than that, the place is nicely tucked in a village and staff Paul was actually the best one, who helps me all the time. Thanks! Other than that, it was a nigthmare for me. I stayed in Champa Lao the next day. The lady boss was good and even let us share her laptop to transfer pictures from my SD card. Even better!

well its strange some people think you're funny and helpful and some people think you are nasty anyway to deal with what seems to be the real problem ie. her missing money. the guest claims she left the purse in the room my staff claims she found the purse in the rubbish bin outside the room ... the guest claims the purse contained 100 dollars ..the staff claims the purse was empty ...is one of them lying ?? is there another explanation? the guest asks quite reasonably why would we take something from the rubbish, well we take lots of things from the rubbish bins.. actually there is no garbage collection here and we are obliged to sort the rubbish. For a start glass bottles steel and aluminum cans, plastic water bottles are all recyclable then there are books magazines and even articles of clothing and shoes which are thrown away by the more affluent. Do you think a poor person here is not going to pick up any thing that appears to have value?? I think if my staff had stolen the 100 dollars [nice round figure that] she wouldn't have been so stupid as to admit that she had found the purse .The most logical thing would have been to deny all knowledge of the purse ..wouldn't it?? Instead she eagerly produces the purse. The guest claims that I asked and scolded the staff for stealing her money yes I did ask them interrogate might be a better word I certainly did not scold them and I resent what that implies If I didn't believe that Nan stole the guests money why would I scold her?? I am very concerned in not having our guests losing their property or not falling off motorbikes, not running into the side of bridges, not getting arrested or falling down holes in caves none of us need those sort of problems and we've had all of that .and more . We actually have lockable safety boxes in the rooms, we employ a night security man, if you want you can give me or my wife your valuables to lock in our safe. I don't want to see people robbed it obviously reflects badly on us. I don't know what happened in this particular case but I think someone is lying but I dont know who..... I just want to mention that on two previous occasions I set a trap for the staff .I placed a camera in one of the recently vacated rooms to see if it would be returned. It was on both occasions

We were told that our bus would take 4 hours to get from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. It took a total of 10 hours. We were so tired when we got to Maylyn Guest House. Plus, it was dark and we could see very little. The next morning, OH MY GOSH! We discovered we had landed in paradise! The view from our porch was amazing and a picture postcard. The majestic mountains framing a rice field that a lady, with an Asian conical hat, was walking through. Our room was very clean as was our private bathroom. The shower was OK, there could have been more pressure but there was always plenty of hot water. The walls were a little thin but people seemed to respect each other. We had no troubles sleeping as it was quiet. We had one of the rooms that shared a porch near the small river. The bed seemed to be harder than the other Asian beds we have slept on during our month of travel. The food at Maylyn's is amazing and very inexpensive. There is Wifi in the common area but not in the rooms. That was OK as it made us just sit on the porch and enjoy the view, watch a bird make a nest and create lasting memories, rather than having our nose stuck in our computers. We are so glad that we stayed at Maylyn Guest House. It was away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown touristy area, it was very quiet and just a lovely spot to enjoy the beautiful gardens and all that nature has to offer.

I am not sure they have rooms for 4. They have bungalows, rooms in small concrete buildings and a row of 4 very simple rooms (bamboo partitions with a common sanitary block). The best is to ask them If not, the beautiful nearby Villa Boa Lao has 2 joined rooms 020 58 97 28 19 030 98 94 261
