This hotel is in a great location. Ferrys starts next door and services are nearby. Laundry, scooter rental, restaurants, ATM. The hotel is clean and luxuriously decorated. The service was especially warm, really nice, helpful and happy people in the reception! You can rent beach towels from the hotel and there is a sunbathing area on the roof of the hotel. The hotel's breakfast is really good.
The room is quite small but functional. The bed is good as is the pillow. The bathroom is clean but there is a little bad air conditioning and the shower cubicle is quite small. The room has adjustable air conditioning and a good refrigerator. The room is really clean, in good condition, (number 100), and the balcony is in a location where it's nice to watch the cars coming and going to the ship and people passing by on this busy street.

Loved this hotel! The hotel staff is so kind and helpful and the rooms are very nice. It is in a good location across from the ferry port and everything you need from gelato to a cash machine is right there. We would definitely stay here again if we ever get back to Sardinia.

We started our 2 week Sardinia trip in La Maddalena and had the pleasure to stay at the Hotel Excelsior for 2 nights.
The hotel is right at the harbor were the ferris arrive and only a couple of minutes away from restaurants, bars and shops.
Our room was very nice and faced the harbor, what was great. Unfortunately, it was therefore also a bit noisy in the early morning hours when trucks/cars started boarding the ferries.
The breakfast was served at the terrace, with a lovely view on the water and all the staff were amazingly friendly.
I definitely recommend this hotel.

Great deal for a stay in April. Wonderful front desk person named Marialouisa. The breakfast buffet was very nice, especially since it was included! The hotel is definitely not four stars—a solid three stars is accurate. Our biggest issue was that they locked the heat at 78 degrees. We asked the front desk about this but they said they couldn’t do anything and we should keep the window open. Problem with that is the winds on the island can be extremely strong and it was blowing up to 40mph during our stay. Plus ferries dock right outside the hotel every ~5 mins so there’s a lot of noise when you keep the window open. The front desk said they don’t turn on the AC until the summer months so keep in mind that your room may be 78 degrees in non-summer months! We loved the town and the island and overall the hotel was a good deal for its April pricing.

Dear Customer, Thank you for the nice review and I take this opportunity to inform you that we have converted the system into air conditioning. We are sorry that it was not possible to do so during your stay, but we had to wait for the weather to improve and for the specialized technician to intervene. We hope to welcome you again in the future! Kind regards, General Manager

WE are Canadian travellers who spent two nights at Hotel Excelsior during our vacation in Sardinia. We could see the hotel from the ferry and after a short walk we were welcomed by a charming hostess at Hotel Excelsior. The accommodation was superb, with a sea view room overlooking the harbour. Our room was very spacious and very clean. We cannot say enough about the staff at the hotel. They were pleasant and always willing to assist us with tour suggestions and information about La Maddalena. A beautiful island! We enjoyed staying by the harbour, and being part of the centre of town. Many restaurants in the area and lots of walking routes along the harbour to enjoy.
The breakfast on the terrace was a great way to start our day. Lots of choices for breakfast.
We hope to return to Sardinia in the future and visit th Hotel Excelsior again. Thank you for an enjoyable stay.

Excellent choice for our stay on Maddalena. No issue being close to the ferry dock. Great views from our room and at breakfast, which has everything we needed to get going win the morning. Special thanks to the reception for taking care a small problem we had, totally unrelated to the hotel. Great price, for location, service, room quality and services.

We stayed here for 4 nights and chose it based on it's convenient location to everything. I'd researched a couple of other options that had a little more islandnd charm, but ultimately decided on the Excelsior because of a very late night arrival and it's easy location directly across from the ferries, which made finding it after the town was dark and had all gone to bed much easier. We got in much later than expected, so this location and a 24 hour on-site staff that we didn't have to worry about disturbing at 1:30am made the late night arrival much less stressful.

The hotel itself is updated and modern. The beds were a little firmer than we liked , but were fine. The rooms was well laid out, plenty of power outlets and the bathroom and shower were spacious. We stayed in July, and the air conditioning felt so good after a day in the hot sun.

The views from both the rooms and the breakfast patio are amazing as they look right out on the harbor. The patio is on the 1st floor - which is the American 2nd floor, so looks out over the boats, car and pedestrians for superior water view. What a treat to sit on this elevated & shaded patio and watch the ferries and boats while sipping your cappuccino in the morning. Breakfast was very good including a lot of fresh fruit and a couple of hot dishes. This same patio is a restaurant & bar in the evening. It would be a great place for a cocktail to enjoy that amazing view as most dinner spots look into the town or are on ground level, so don't see much of the water.

The staff were most helpful and there's a large storage area with extra umbrellas, floaties and beach toys that other guests have left behind that can be borrowed.

The main town is within a 1-2 of blocks as are the boats in the harbor with which you can arrange tours of the smaller islands, which is highly recommended. We loved La Maddalena and would stay here again, especially if doing a very late night arrival.

Rooms were very nice and clean although bit small. Breakfast was very good. We came off season and there was no kitchen, but regardless the hotel is excellent. Reception and employees are wonderful and helpful, they really made us feel good and gave lots of helpful information. Location is also great right front of the port and nearby restaurants. It is probably the best hotel in Maddalena, Sardinia.

Excelsior is right across the street from the Palau ferry in the lovely town of LaMaddalena. Free parking is available at a lot nearby. The staff was helpful and recommended one of the best restaurants we ate in while in Sardinia (Sotovento). The room was clean with a lovely balcony overlooking the harbor.

I went back to this hotel one year after my first visit and I have to change my review from positive to negative.

The rooms quality is still OK, however the prices went up and the quality of the service went down ( a lot).

I found the staff at the front desk rude and unhelpful.

They were useless and unfriendly when I booked and they confirmed this attitude when they kicked me out in the morning at 11 AM even if I asked a late check-out. As my boat was at 1.30PM and the temperature outside was 35 degrees, I asked if I could stay at least until noon. The girl at the front desk ignored my request and pretending to check her PC she said that they had someone arriving early. I could see her screen and she wasnt checking anything...really pathetic.

They told me that staying 1 extra hour was a big problem for their cleaning process...

Other negative points :
- the very noisy cleaning ladies started cleaning the rooms at 8.30 and they woke me up with their loud chats and hoovering
- they say they have WiFi but it doesnt work
- 5 days cancellation policy is too much
- average continental breakfast

Bottom line: they think they are a 4 star, now they charge like a 4 stars but the service is really poor. Never again.

Da Olbia bisogna raggiungere Palau. Il traghetto c è ogni ora e costa sui 35 euro per 2 persone più l'auto.

We stayed as family of 4 (teenaged children). We stayed in 2 rooms (girls' room had 2 single beds, parents room had 1 bed) were next door to each other but not adjoining. However I do know that they have a suite that will hold 4 people. I think I looked into the suite but determined that 2 rooms were similar in price and allowed for 2 bathrooms (showers), which was nice especially after a day at the beach.

Hi, Does anyone know if there is parking around the hotel? I would be visiting at peak July time.
Answer from P R
Seattle163 contributions53 helpful votes
The hotel does not have parking but there are a couple of parking lots across the street and also within 2 blocks. These lots are very busy because of proximity to the ferry, boat excursions and access to the towns pedestrian zone (shops, restaurants) but we always found a spot to squeeze into. there is also limited street parking. If you are parking in the late evening/early morning lots of spots are available but daytime it may take a few minutes to find a spot.

Hi. Is it okay not to have a pool? Is the beach near by? In walking distance? Thanks in advance. Johanna
