The Matterhorn South Lodge and Backpackers is a minimalist establishment that provided accommodations for the group of 10 girls that I was traveling with. Upon arrival the staff seemed friendly and accommodating. However, the reception staff charged the credit card on hold prematurely due to the fact that we had been gone all day thinking that we had already left....

I'd say it's fine but nothing special. Rooms are clean and you get a bath towel which is nice, but 6 bed dorm pretty tight on storage space. Kitchen is well equipped but there isn't a lounge area, so the hostel lacked atmosphere. Reasonably priced though.

We stayed at Matterhorn south for a total of 6 nights and had a good time there. We were a group of 5 and even though the room was a bit tight for us, it was clean and confortable. Staff was friendly and very nice when we had to move a night. Shared rooms are good and Kitchen is fully...

We had initially booked ourselves in for only two nights but extended twice. We stayed in a room with twin beds and a bunk bed for the kids and an en suite bathroom. Bath towels were provided and after two nights changed without us asking for it. The hostel is mainly run by wwoofers, but we felt looked after and...

I stayed one night there and it was the worst hostel I've had in New Zealand in 4 weeks... When I arrived, the manager at the reception was not really friendly, but okay, that happens sometimes. Then, when I was in the kitchen, I talked with some woofers (who work for accommodation) and they seemed to be really unhappy with...

The group leader booked us into this accommodation but had not used it before. Our recommendation is dont. The rooms are tired, with noisy heater and poor quality fittings. The shower had large open hole in base as the grate didn't fit. We stayed in an en-suite room upstairs and although it was good for viewing the lake that's about...

We stayed in a double room with ensuite.... sounds nice but it wasn't. For $111 we slept in the most uncomfortably hard bed ever, we ended up folding up a blanket and putting that underneath the sheet to get at least some sleep... The heater was too loud to leave on overnight, as was the bathroom heater. The shower head...

We had the misfortune of staying here for 10 days while working in Wanaka. We paid $80 for a double room in the hostel side of the property. The room was small, dirty and smelled of damp and not what we expected for $80 considering we had just come from a much nicer hostel where we had a very large...

This backpackers/hostel is the 2nd most expensive one we have stayed in yet it was completely the least value for money! The most expensive place we stayed in we had our own room yet here we were put in separate 7 bed rooms and it was only slightly cheaper! It was also terrible in comparison to much cheaper hostels for...

The room was large enough for a quick stay and super big bathroom. The management were quite happy to slip in a fold up bed for my 8 year old, despite it being only bookable for a couple (my mistake). Right in town and short walk to lake. Very quiet at night.
