This holiday was a beach escape and my intentions were to be close to a nice beach but that is not the case. The tide makes the beach perfect for walks but not for swimming. The hotel compensates for this by providing free rides to a very nice beach close by.

The access from the airport is easy, a 60-90-minute ride with a taxi (60$) and the hotel is close to the village but still secluded. Roads around the area are really bad so we tried to minimize leaving the hotel by car.

Our room was great, spacious and very clean. I particularly liked the orientation of the villas that allowed us to keep the curtains open with no direct visibility into our room from outside. Sleep quality is great with the exception of the faint noise of termites. Other than that there were no annoying bugs and the resort took very good care with the animals and insects that were around (although all of them are harmless). The WiFi had many problems while we were there but they had technicians working on it.

The hotel has 2 restaurants, one offering a buffet and another a la carte, with special events on some days. The food and the drinks in both restaurants was amazing!! The pool is also very good with a great view and a pool bar with the best bartender ever, Emanuel!! The hotel staff was always very friendly and helpful with whatever we asked. The reception can improve with how they handle guests' special requests, asking for services that are expected of a 5-star hotel.

The beach changes a lot. At low tide you can walk in the sea for more than 500 meters and explore along with the locals that go fishing during the day. In the evening the sea rises so it is generally not so safe to swim because of the sea urchins and the rocks.

My fiancé and I stayed here for around 4 nights during April, it was the end of our trip and the starting of Ramadan. The hotel was quiet with some other couples and a few families. Guests were respectful. We had a half board stay where dinner was provided and different every night, the food and never manager was so kind and spoke to us every night personally about our dinner, he took on our advice and opinions and immediately made some changes!

The head chef even made us a special local dinner one evening and it amazing! Such kind staff!!!

The room had ample space, it was cleaned daily and there was an evening turn down service - a very comfortable room with a balcony and large bathroom and living room.

When Ramadan came the hotel went out of their way to provide iftar at sunset and made a special breakfast each morning at 4 am so that my fiancé could fast with ease.

When it was our time to leave my flight was unexpectedly canceled and we had to stay another night, Mary on the front desk kindly requested that we could stay in our room
Until we left for the flight late the next evening free of charge.

I am totally humbled by this hotels thoughtfulness and would return again and again.

Thank you to all the happy staff, amazing breakfasts, views, sunsets, cleaning service, the food and beverage manager and Mary especially ♥️

Oh!! The pool was PERFECT !

The hotel is luxurious and well situated in the clean Nungwi beach with an overlooking Jetty where dinner and parties are held. The hotel is well maintained and provides the best smelling soaps and fragrances at the cottages. The cottages are spacious and have a huge bathroom and also an indoor wardrobe with a balcony and relaxing bed at the patio. The cottages are also well placed, giving privacy to each guest. The food served is awesome, and has countless varieties every day- fresh juices, great variety of seafood (Crabs & Shrimps& fish) etc. The Hotel shuttles one to Kendwa rocks every day 3 times, where you experience the best private beach park in Nungwi. I liked the jetty dinner experience and the adult infinity pool (very spacious). Overall a great place for pictures and total relaxation with exquisite luxury especially for a couple. The hotel offers many spa experiences which are veeeryyyy relaxing and gives a 24hr gym with cold towels and water to freshen up :-). This Hotel is the best in Nungwi.

We've been at Zalu for 5 nights from 30/12 to 4/01. Our experience was very bad, starting from the receptionist who was very unpolite and disinterested (he played mobile games while talking) which was definitely not acceptable. Our room was large enough, quite comfortable but nothing special for a 5*, considering the poor service. Everyday we had to claim for towels or bath gel. Awful wifi connection, working only at the reception and sometimes at the pool, which is the main living area during the day since there's no usable beach outside. Little deck chairs comparing to the number of guests. Towels are not changed, they just fix them on chairs. You may use the previous guest's one, without knowing that.
Food is terribly poor, I never saw a service like this in my life. Little choice, food badly cooked especially the grilled one, fish is always raw and meat was burnt all the time. When you get to have it since the grill man was very lazy. The menu for our last night was: carrot salad with wurstel, beetroot, lettuce and a strange mix of onions and calamari - like chewing gum - for starters.
Plain rice, boiled potatoes, fried potatoes, beans, a sort of tortilla stuffed with chicken and some veggies. It was drowned with oil. Terrible. Burnt meat and raw fish always available, cooker permitting.
They charge 6 USD for a beer and 4 USD for a bottle of water. Ridiculous
Finally, you're supposed to sign everything you take from bar, also during main courses, even water. But they don't, and when you go to clear the bill, they'll try to charge not signed bills on your room. There's plenty of valuable and well run hotels in Zanzibar, if you want to enjoy your stay consider another place. They don't care any guests, they just care money and the way to get more, in a very bad and unprofessional way.

After checking in, I assumed we were being escorted to our prepaid seafront suite, however we were directed towards the back of the resort and were taken upstairs to room 112. This room is NOT included on the resort map and it felt like we were displaced.

Our reservation was booked over 6 months in advance. We requested and prepaid for a seafront suite located at S11 – S16. No one explained to us in the lobby that our room was not available and how the situation would be resolved. On January 1st at 2:30pm we finally moved to an ocean front suite located in room 21 as a consolation.

Other dissatisfaction we encountered in the room included: no hot water in the shower, no a/c in the bathroom, the refrigerator didn't work, extremely slow internet and very limited tv channel selections. Also, please note in order to enjoy the beach, you must take a shuttle 15 minutes from the resort.
The only minor adjustment we received was an upgrade from half board to full board, which was only 3 lunch meals. The resort did not offer any forms of resolution for mishandling our reservation and poor overall experience. We did not receive a formal explanation for apology for our unacceptable experience.

My travel agency contacted Zalu many times to resolve this matter without any resolution, and has decided to discontinue business. I sent an email to the GM and other staff on 1/31/20 explaining the situation and have not received a response. I would NEVER recommend the resort or island. BEWARE!!

Hotel was a few days in paradise (: If you're in Nungwi or are looking for an escape while on the island I'd definitely recommend staying here.

Room was large and comfortable with a nice bathroom and the AC kept the place a wonderful temp. Housekeeping was sneaky, frequent, and thorough in their stops in to refresh the room :)

Resort itself is beautiful - pools were lovely and lots of places to sit out and soak up some sun. Beach access to Nungwi was nice and we walked out for dinner/drinks one evening.

The huge dock is a really fun and unique part of the place and every bar has their own cocktail menu so be sure to explore.

The three of us that went also went to the spa which I would certainly recommend as well.

An awesome spot!

I have been there last week with my 2 sons (11 and 5) and 2 adults friends.
The villa they gave us was extraordinary in terms of location, space and cleanliness. The main pool is week maintained and offers amazing views at sunrise and sunset.
The housekeeping staff is really friendly and does a great job. The room was made perfect everyday.
The last night they surprised us with a dinner in front of the pool. Amazing spot.
Vote 10 for these points.
Now the bad part.
The manager of the hotel was absolutely unuseful... a weak lady without any personality which was not able to help us in few things.
The hotel offers bycicles for free to use to reach the near village... unfortunately all the 4 bikes had flat tires (sorry broken tires) so we could not use them. 4 on 4 available 👀
The food is really average with minimal choice, very slow service, no kids menu at all. With a minimal effort from an international chef they could make the experience really amazing but they seems not to care.
So overall a good experience with huge margins of improvement

Have been to places but Essque beat them all, The moment you are picked at the airport , you get puzzled by the courtesy and professionalism, but wait until you enter Essque Zalu Zanzibar, and the staff make you feel like you are the owner of the hotel. They are well trained and they are always at your service, The level of service with where I have been before this place surpasses the best place in the world. Their rooms are attended as frequent as soon as they feel you need more comfort, clean fabric for the bed and the towel always top notch. I was here for more than a week and my greatest fear when I visit places is mosquitoes, I searched for this blood sucker in this facility and I didn’t manage to get it and I congratulate these guys for splendid work .

Dinning experience is out of this world , every taste is perfected to detail with natural ingredients, there is away they play with your taste buds that the English language is short of words to explain it.

The hotel setup and the view is breathtaking, The rooms will make you oversleep but the memory of yesterday meals will wake you, less you miss out.

I have countless pictures in my phone as for my daughter her phone became full to capacity and she encroached to mine.

As for my wife my popular vote as skyrocketed she has been speechless with the experience.

Dinner at the jetty with high tide is an experience of a lifetime. The sunset will make you stay longer at the jetty as you try to explain it in your mother tongue and I heard the sunrise is mind thrilling, I didn’t experience it as The bed made me oversleep.

I was wondering whoever give stars can award it 10 stars instead of the the 5.

My friend and I went to this resort for 3 nights after volunteering for a week and we did not want to leave! We are both in our mid-20s. The resort was incredibly beautiful, well set up. The food was very good and they overfed you. We managed to have a black friday deal, since we went during low season (early march), and we got free breakfast and dinner with our reservation. We had to pay for drinks approxmiately 8-10USD, but we expected that upon arrival to the resort. The food was very good, so we did not mind paying for lunch, if we ordered. I cannot speak for this resort during high season, but we had the pool basically to ourselves, it didn't really rain much at all. The dock is very beutiful with a restraunt and bar at the end of the dock. You can jump in too! However, i can see where this resort could get loud/crowded during high season when the resort is full. But this resort made our Zanzibar trip. The rooms were exceptionally clean and large.

Loved this hotel. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the hotel staff with a welcome drink. Everything was at our individual pace. "Hakuna Matata" was a phrase we heard very often. The rooms and beautiful and spacious. We had a garden room. And the infinity pool is gorgeous. Breakfast lunch and dinner can be delivered to your room at no extra charge. The hotel staff is SUPER friendly and acommodating. There is a shuttle that takes you to Kendawa Beach, where you can soak up the sun, do some shopping and find extra activities. Even though the resort has beach access, it's not fir for swimming most of the time. I do wish there was better beach access right from the resort. The spa was so relaxing. And the Nungwi shops were a short walk/ bike ride away.
