Sultan Sands Island Resort is situated on the wide, sparkling beaches of Kiwengwa on the East Coast of Zanzibar Island. Sultan Sands is a resort with a unique character: an inspired blend of Swahili and Arab architecture and decor creates a relaxed ambience, while first-class amenities and facilities ensure complete comfort. The spacious rooms at Sultan Sands are built in the style of traditional African rondavels, each tastefully decorated with hand-carved Zanzibari furniture. All rooms are ocean-facing with some situated just metres from the beach. The resort's wining and dining venues are equally impressive, offering delicious local specialities as well as Far-Eastern and European favourites. Sultan Sands shares a 500m stretch of beach with its sister property - Bluebay Beach Resort & Spa. Guests of the two resorts also share many facilities and amenities, including the famous Oasis Spa and the One Ocean Dive Centre.

We spent two weeks in Sultan Sands for our 10th wedding anniversary, and had a wonderful time. Dass and his staff went out of their way to make sure we had a good time. The service was fantastic, the food was excellent and was different everyday. Everywhere was clean and kept really tidy. Our room was such a cute bungalow, and was kept immaculate. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but you can get tea and coffee from the restaurant at meal times or at the bar area all day. We were treated to dinner on the beach on the night of our anniversary, which was such a surprise and really made our trip.

The pool was really clean, and beach/pool towels are provided. The hotel is right on the beach. There are plenty of loungers and parasols by the pool and on the beach for hotel guests. Take water shoes for the beach/sea as there are harpoon snails in the sea which can hurt you if you stand on them.

There is always entertainment in the evenings, such as a band or local dancers. There are activities on during the day such as aqua-aerobics, but you're not pressured into taking part, and can be left alone to relax if you prefer. You can also join in the activities at the sister hotel next door, called Blue Bay.

We also used the gym and the spa while we were there. The gym is small but is air conditioned and has weight benches, treadmills, bikes, and free weights. the spa staff were lovely, and looked after us well. They offer lots of treatments. We had a coffee scrub and a massage in a package. The service was excellent.

You can book trips to Stone Town, boat trips, and spice tours from the hotel reception. We booked a half day spice tour, and had a private tour in an air conditioned car. It was a really great day out. We saw all of the spices growing on a farm, and tasted them all. We also tried a lot of fruit, and had the chance to buy the spices they grew there.

Overall, we had a fantastic trip, and I would recommend this hotel.
An unforgettable holiday.

The minute we checked in, the front Desk staff were very polite & professional. We arrived late as our plane was delayed, so they called their manager at that late time as dinner was over and he welcomed us in person. Mr. Dass, the manager, also arranged quickly a private dinner for us, what we did not expect to be possible late night.
Rooms where astonishing, perfectly clean and the mosquito nets carefully arranged. The lady that decorated our room with flowers every day put a big smile on my face.
The resort facilities are ment to meet everyone’s needs. Big pool, small pool, lounge, bar with a large choice of cocktails, good wine and great staf.
Great options for food especially if you like fish & all day fresh fruits,
Excelent location with nice beach and a fantastic ocean view.
WiFi was fast in almost all of the resort. Most important me and my son felt very safe at the hotel, the security levels are at very high standards. Beachboys are kept away by the security people, don't bother you at all. However, if you are curious to meet them, they are just few steps away awaiting you at the beach nearby the hotel where the security people have you in sight.
I am extremely happy we chose this hotel, it exceeded my expectations!
I highly recommend it for tourists that look for high standards but at the same time want to feel the local mark.
I like to give many thanks to the manager that did his best to ensure that all our needs are best taken care of. We upgraded at AI as there are no many restaurants near-by. (along usual beachboys offers as souvenirs, safari, trips, the ladys were offering henna tatoos, hairdressing, massages, but as well to cook local food for you...) Late check out was assured till 5 o'clock for a fee of only 50 usd that included as well lunch. Mr. Dass also carrgully arranged excursions, did the covid registration for our departure, also asked the driver that did our transfer to the airport to show us interesting places on the route and take care we buy all we have on the list before reaching the airport.
Thank you slab to all the staff as it provided an outstanding service.

What a wonderful holiday we had at Sultan Sands. It was recommended by friends of ours, who actually surprised us at Zanzibar airport and joined us for the two weeks. We were certainly not disappointed and had an amazing time.

The bedrooms are spacious and serviced so attentively by the lovely ladies who come twice a day, once in the morning to make the bed and then in the evening to prepare the room and sort the mosquito nets. There is no kettle but if you ask for one, it will be supplied free of charge. There is one UK plug socket in the room (we took an extention lead) as well as the usual Euro plugs. The restaurant staff are excellent and the food choices cater for all - local cuisine for the more adventurous and a spicier option, but a variety of meats, pasta, vegetables and salad for the plainer palate. Don't miss out on the omelette 'with spice' for breakfast!

The beautiful beach is enhanced by the masai traders, who although trying to get people to come to their shops, are in no way pushy or intrusive and were so friendly. A trip to the reef is a must - there are locals on the beach to barter with. Cashews and flipflops are good value but don't buy a coconut, as the gardener regularly shins up the tree and brings them down to try the coconut milk...try it with rum!!!

A mention for the people who made our holiday more special. Marnix, the hotel manager... what a lovely man he is. He was so friendly and obviously works very hard to maintain the high standards the hotel has. We spent many hours frequenting the beach bar, which was manned perfectly by Happy and Elia. Rajabu worked throughout the hotel and his smiley face made our day. Thank you.

If you are thinking of excursions, we went on a tour of Prison Island and Stone Town which was organised through the reception and was definitely worth the money we paid - highly recommended.

Have I got any negatives? Not really but if I had to be picky the WiFi needs to be improved and if you're looking for nightlife or a party party destination, this isn't for you.

We will be back xx

Sultan Sands Island Resort is fantastic. Originally we booked the Baobab Village Adults Only but fortunately we were quartered in the main part of Sultan Sands which was better because closer to the ocean, cuter cabana type houses and less of a walk up the hill. My sister and I just spent two wonderful weeks there on vacation, and it really felt like home away from home. It is a very secure resort where everyone is comfortable leaving their belongings on the chairs in the restaurant, pool/beach area and the bar. It is a very safe environment especially in the time of this pandemic since everything happens outside. Masks and hand sanitisers everywhere in the common areas. The accommodations are clean, nicely decorated, comfortable and always kept clean, with cleaning service twice a day. Everyone from the staff of the resort is super nice and most speak english. The gardeners do a wonderful job keeping the amazing tropical garden looking beautiful and neat, and will give you flowers if you desire them every day or a coconut if that is your fancy. The food is also very very good, and super fresh! Fresh fish, lots of meat, fresh pasta dishes made to order and different curries, really endless choices to mix and match. Lots of vegetables and fruit which definitely taste better than most places in the world since they come from local farms that probably are all organic. There is some short animation in the early evenings, mostly performances of local dancers and performers, followed by live music by local bands which play a variety of different kinds music. It is all cool, and not overbearing. People hang out and meet each other in the large pool/performance/bar area and make friends from different places. The beach in front of hotel is public, but beautiful and there are some pesty sellers, but the hotel also has security guards that keep the sellers at bay. The water is fantastic and great place to swim and do paddle boarding or some wind surfing. There are almost no waves, and no strong currents, very safe water. The manager Dass and all of the concierge staff is also very helpful in everything in the resort and arranging other travel plans, excursions and changing money. It is a super comfortable relaxed place that we really enjoyed!

We stayed here for three nights at the start of February . This is quite a small resort but is linked to its sister property , the Blue bay , next door. It would have been nice for the all inclusive package to have been valid for either hotel but sadly this is not the case. That is probably my only gripe, oh and the air con is possibly the coldest i have ever come across !!!. Our room 330 was a little circular bungalow located as they all are in the gardens , about 100 yards from the beach. There are some that are located up a moderate hill which we were pleased we did not get given. Be mindful of this if you have mobility issues. The room was excellent, with everything you need , very large , almost like a suite and split level also. The hotel itself had quite a personal feel ,all the staff we came across were friendly and professional . The meals were of a good standard , live cooking at all meals (omlettes at b/fast , pasta at lunch and dinner.) Plenty of choices even if you are picky. The drinks were fine for AI ,wife tells me the rose wine was particularly nice. Fair range of coctails included but strangely not pina clolada. I dont think i have been anywhere in the world that doesnt have this as an included cocktail . This was easily overcome by ordering a chui chui coctail and a seperate shot of white rum to mix !. The beach was outstanding . On a par with Paje further south and better than Jambiani . There was no massive tidal difference and we were able to swim in the ocean most of the day..Evening entertainment was the resident band/s and dancers which were good ,.Having been to quite a few resorts in Zanzibar i have to say you could very easily pay a lot more than this hotel charges and find yourself in a place no better than the Sultan. The hotel was reasonably full whilst we were there, with many different nationalities, but there seemed very little desire by anyone to interact with each other to the point where people will avoid eye contact with you as they pass.I found this to be quite rude as I will say good morning to anyone but you do find this in some places where a number of guests are a little stuck up themselves sadly. We were one of about four British couples at the hotel, maybe the other nationalities were showing their displeasure of our EU departure...This was an excellent choice and i would recommend it to anyone.

Hard to describe our incredible holiday at Sultan Sands. Lovely big beach, with white sand and warm water. Security on the beach and near the pool excellent. Daas is a fantastic manager, really went out of his way to make us feel welcome and anything we requested, they delivered. When we got there, we had no kettle in the room, requested one and it was delivered immediately. Staff were very friendly and helpful, went out of their way to make us feel welcome throughout our stay. From the reception desk staff, to the barmen who prepared our drinks, (the all inclusive option is definitely the best) and the bedroom cleaners who kept our room impeccably spotless, to the garden boy, who kept bringing us beautiful bunches of flowers, and Gertrude, who always greeted us with a huge smile. The bedroom was beautiful, comfortable bed, spotless, loved the little verandah with a sea view. Bathroom lovely with good pressure, hot water all the time. Air con and fan worked perfectly, good "safe" in the room, had lots of wardrobe space. Everyday big bottles of water were put in the rooms, with lovely shampoo, gels, cream etc. Clean beach towels and bathroom towels were supplied each day Not one complaint!! Bravo to the chefs, the food was amazing, varied, fresh and delicious. Hard to make decisions each day as to what to choose. It was my husbands 60th and they made us a lovely cake, which came with singing and dancing, such fun. Thank you Sultan Sands, we will, God Willing, be back, keep room 336 ready for us!!!

My wife and I spent 2 weeks in the sultan sands hotel. The hotel is connected to a partner hotel "blue bay" where you are able to use pool and facilities.

The hotel prepared a special reception for us as honeymooners, we had a beautiful flower arrangement across our door, a bottle of cava in the fridge and a complementary private dinner for two looking out to sea!

The staff at Sultan Sands were exceptional. We were made to feel incredibly welcome and throughout our holiday formed some strong relationships which enhanced our experience tenfold. We would like to give special mention to the following staff:

Kitchen department: Salum and Idrisa, both very friendly and there to cook fresh pasta / meats / omelettes for you. In general, the food at Sultan Sands was incredibly high quality.

Bar / Restaurant department: Abdul, Erick, Lameck, Hashim, Austa. All very proffesional and with great personalities. Table service was offered at the bar and the service was superb.

Pool department: Adam (involved in the entertainment and watersports too). Always carried our sun lounger mattress and towels in the morning, very pleasant and made our stay extra special.

Reception: Fabian, Everiste, Ali sheha
All more happy to help whenever with whatever problem you might have! Fabien went the extra mile and repaired my sunglasses with a clever super glue mixed with chalk to create a composite bond!

The hotel manager Dass was amazing. He was incredibly attentive and made it his duty to make our stay perfect. He is very visible around the hotel, always there to help and accommodate any of our requests.

This has been an unforgettable experience for us, I would absolutely recommend sultan sands to others.

If you are planning to visit Zanzibar and you are thinking about white sand beaches, kind and open people and delicious food, you better go & stay at Sultan Sands Hotel. I've stayed there for a week, celebrating my friend's 30th Bday! We've experienced this welcoming atmosphere, learned about very different to ours culture and felt for those short 8days that we belong to very unique & positive community. Rooms are located in small rounded huts (2rooms in one hut), very comfy and neat, being cleaned twice daily, it is hard to keep a mess if you know what I mean;)there are several activities/ sports (e.g. kayak, kitesurfing right next to the hotel, billiards or ping-pong)if you choose not to lay down on the sunbed all day long and amaze your eyes with the views;), several options when it comes to food - I am a vegetarian and I find it difficult in some countries in Africa to try local cousin, but that's not the case in Sultan Sands, the food was delicious and I've had many options. As we usually choose to travel a bit and encounter the culture, the hotel is a great starting point, Stone Town is less than hour from there and if you ask, you can also get some take away to enjoy during the adventure. Overall, we are coming back for sure & we hope to not only reunit with amazing stuff at Sultans' but also other positive and open guests :) hakuna matata!

We have recently returned from our holiday in Tanzania and Zanzibar and found the Sultan Sands Resort at Kiwengwa beach to be an excellent hotel in all respects. The Duty Manager, Dass, was always extremely friendly and helpful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location of the hotel meant we could enjoy a changing coastal landscape as the tides changed, and we were lucky to be able to swim in the sea both morning and afternoon without problem. The staff were very welcoming and we would like to mention, in particular, Daoud Kombo from the Blue Bay Resort who went out of his way to make our time there very special. His love for the island and its people is clearly evident as is his commitment to the local school. He was also our teacher in the Swahili lesson as part of the entertainment programme. We found learning a few of the basics very useful and a lot of fun, while the staff and locals really appreciated our efforts to communicate. 'Hakuna Matata' will stay with us forever! We would certainly recommend this resort to anyone visiting the island.

My wife and I stayed here for two weeks Feb into March and we both adored this place.
From arrival we felt the warm friendly atmosphere.
Staff are lovely, they always greet you with a smile and a "Jambo".
Rooms are spotless and comfortable, with fantastic views, beds turned down nightly.
Excellent food, plenty to choose from, could always find something. However if hotel is full and you are a late diner, some of the menu may have ran out.
Bar and bar staff are fab, plenty of choice for inclusive cocktails and a few different local beers.
It doesn't take long for the staff to remember your name and favourite tipple.
Beach is beautiful white sand, but don't expect it to be swept. It is left in its natural state so there will be seaweed to step over.
The sea is very warm and is tidal. It will retreat to reveal the alge plantation off shore and then return right up to the hotel steps. Sometimes it can be flat calm and others quite rough, usually late afternoon early evening and it may bring the wind.
Sunbeds are plentiful on the hotel raised beach and the pool attendant will be happy to bing you a mattress and lay out your towels. The Waiter's will also do the drinks round.
There are sellers on the beach who will approach, please give them a little of your time (they can be a mine of information) and if you don't want to buy anything a polite no is all that is needed.
A special mention to Happy in the restaurant and Hamanda in the bar, and Dass the manager, never have I seen a hotel manager so hands on, constantly checking this and that and talking to his customers, tirelessly. A big thank you.
Brits are few here (probably only 4 couples when we visited) but it was nice to make friends and be a large part of our holiday. Thanks guys.
The only sour note, on day of check out (although we had already settles our bill earlier) we were approached by reception to pay an extra $50 for lunchtime meals for day of arrival and departure as they were before official check-in time and after check-out time. ( incidentally our friends were not charged although they had same flight times.)
This didn't distract from a wonderful holiday in beautiful settings a fantastic hotel among lovely people.

Will be back
