That was my fifth time at the Barazza and once more I was not disappointed. First there is the oustanding location with an untouched immaculate beach from which you can spend hours watching the ocean shifting colors. There is also the refined resort with its white sophisticated lines and shapes that seems to have emerged from an Arabic dream or even better from The thousand and one nights. And of course there is the staff : so nice, so devoted, so helpful, so present without never being intrusive. Of course I could praise so many other things such as the food, the drinks or the spa but such an experience must be lived to be fully understood. I very seldom write reviews but having read one quite dismissive and so different from my own stays I felt I had to set the record straight. If I wanted to be 100 percent fair in my review I would just say that two things could be improved in the beautiful villa : the plastic soap dispenser in the shower that is not up to the standards of such a place and the flush in the toilets that cruelly lacks power. But those are just details and hopefully I hope to be back for a sixth time.

Baraza is a beautiful up-market resort. The Villas with private splash pools are spacious and beautifully decorated in the Arabian theme. Regina made our stay even more special. The food is outstanding with great variety at every meal. We will be back!

We stayed here for 10 nights What we liked: food (selection and all inclusive variety) It is (potentially) possible to order anything always and everywhere Very, very Beautiful property Villas are big and beautiful with a nice outside area Regina, our housekeeper and Bharat the Indian chef were doing an amazing job and went out and beyond! They were dedicated to their job and were very approachable and proactive, thank you so much again!!! The overall service at dinner also improved somewhat during our stay and we enjoyed a complimentary lunch near the beach one day, which was very nice. We liked the later check-out (3 hours). Other than that our overall guest experience was most definitely not value for money (considering an average of 800€-1300€/night) and underwhelming, mainly because of the lack in service and service mentality, cleanliness, lack of management and maintenance, lack of overall communication and false advertising. This is why we rated our stay so low: A LOT of Seaweed and green algae (the one that grow in sewage water) on the beach which smelled horrendously and looked horribly. The pictures on the website are not the truth at all and misleading. Actually there was no usable beach while we were there because the seaweed/algea was not removed. Overall cleanliness around the pool was a catastrophe (maggots, remains of food and cocktails not cleaned thoroughly, birds nesting in the Umbrellas, lying pads were not cleaned and some smelled heavily like cat-poo, cigarette buds between the loungers on the beach, towels were just left for hours during pouring rain throughout the day,…), none of that changed or got cleaned in the 10 days we were there. In fact nobody is taking care of continuous cleaning throughout the day, which didn’t leave a hygienic feeling about anything. Our daughter stepped into a piece of glass by the pool but that as well did not turn into a cleaning session…we also then learned that there is no first aid kit at the pool or beach available. The doctor at the property does not even have hand sanitizer at her office. This incident also did not lead to any apologies. The mood among most of the the staff seemed very, very bad, sometimes even rude and most of the time distant and tired. It was very uncomfortable and irritating. When we for example asked for a drink or had to settle anything the reply was always a smile and then 50% of the time the drink came wrong, to the wrong loungers or not at all and it was impossible to get through. I addressed all of the above several times with different people but nothing happened about it. One example was our plunge pool which didn’t have water but it took 5 attempts and 3 days from our side until someone took care of it, it lost the water again which was not further noticed. Communication with the reception was a 99% fail. There was a dedicated villa-host which we did not know how to reach and everything we talked about with her, when we would accidentally see each other, lead to nothing. In general we got the feeling that there was no proper and thorough management on the property. 95% of the staff minded their own business, which concluded also in a lot of staff just passing without saying hello or guests waiting endlessly on the beach or pool to order anything, after a while we always had to go to the bar directly. When it rained, staff would often pass us by with an umbrella but instead of offering the umbrella to guests they would ignore them completely. There were also no umbrellas available other than in the villa. So when it would start to rain, which happens quite frequently in the rainy season, during breakfast/lunch/dinner one had to go through pouring rain if you forgot to take your own or someone else took yours. A very simple solution would have been to provide umbrellas from the 70% unoccupied villas but this suggestion was dismissed. All of the above described made sense when the GM of the Zanzibar Collection and the resort manager appeared on the property: they as well passed by without acknowledging any of the (few) guests, not even looking at them. This is in fact the very first property we went to, where the general manager did not introduce him-/herself directly and with a conversation about the overall satisfaction with the stay and there were 10 days in which that could have happened…It really left the impression that the focus is indeed not about guest satisfaction but rather maintenance of the property. Apparently there were activities (cooking, palm tree waving, tidal walks,…) but we never knew about anything before because it was not communicated and then they were not flexible enough to adjust it to the interests of the guests (maybe cocktail mixing is less an activity for the children who would have loved to do something special during the rainy days but instead they could have offered mocktail mixing…), flexibility in general was a problem. We asked about the tidal walk and were shown a direction to walk to, nobody offered to accompany or help us. The snorkeling trip we booked was a mere drop-off at the sea, again nobody snorkeled with us or explained anything. The cocktails at the hotel were not good at all and looked and tasted differently every time. It is almost a talent to manage to even turn a Pina Colada or Banana Daiquiri into a sour, lime tasting drink…again, our attempt to talk to the bar would not lead to anything and after a while we just gave up. The very low occupancy would have been a chance to go „all-in“ in terms of service and guest satisfaction but instead it lead to the most basic service possible. We felt like it would have been better to close the property for the month because we experienced a complete opposite of what is described on Tripadvisor. There is an overall satisfaction survey handed out at the end of the stay and we know that they received more feedbacks like this one directly from other guests who were leaving during our stay, but again nothing changed. It seems like processes/protocols are not established, properly reviewed and maintained. General downsides: towels are placed on the furthest place possible, and not where they are actually needed (pool, changing room, entrance to the beach)? Needless to say that you have to go and get them yourself. It is very, very dimm inside the villas with a lot of light switches (about 20-30) which all have to be switched off individually when leaving the villa (a lot of potentially wasted energy). No coffee machines, beach bags or mosquito repellent provided in the room or on the property, also no hair conditioner (amenities are generally very basic for a 5* property), the gym is small and dark with outdated equipment, the kids-club smells heavily of pee, palm trees are dangerously loaded with coconut. Needless to say: we would neither return or recommend this particular resort.

Thank you for visiting us and we were pleased to welcome you to Zanzibar. We appreciate your review and feedback and we are sorry that you were not happy with almost everything at Baraza and that you found fault with most of our offering. The management team remembers you well and recalls speaking to you on several occasions during your stay. Your comments, of course, are not in line with our usual feedback from countless guests. Having been on the island for close to three decades, we are among the first international-class beach hotels on Zanzibar and our longevity has been driven by our genuine Zanzibari hospitality coupled with our very close attention to detail. We regret that you did not raise these issues while at the hotel, so that we could have assisted you. It is difficult to take any action when we only hear of this only after your departure. We have taken your comments onboard and we wish you happy travels ahead.

This was our 4 th visit to this wonderful hotel ,more like home Having visited other vacations in the last couple of years it was great to return to see so many of the old team at our first lunch who remembered us.Juma now a waiter Godfrey the beach waiter,Ramadhan who ran across the gardens to say I thought it was you,and of course Esther now the food and beverage manager .The food as always was perfect,we love our seafood and there was an abundance..As there was near full occupancy we had the most marvellous buffet lunches and every other night we had set meals which beautifully presented. The chefs went out of their way to give us any special requests. The beach bandas were great and loved to watch with binoculars the fishermen and the goings on the beach. The reef walk is spectacular and interesting we did it 3 times by ourselves each time was different. We are going on a safari in August to see the migration crossings and we will of course be returning to BARAZA for a further week in the sun.

A major flaw with Trip Advisor, is that they do not have a separate rating system for Luxury Hotels... And Baraza is a true luxury hotel. To give Baraza a Five Star rating like so many "Resort Properties" is a travesty. Baraza is so far superior . So much more I could say. Feel free to ask. Simply stated, you will have a very difficult time finding a better resort anywhere in the world... And the spices... left my tongue dancing, and my lips on fire..

We stayed 6 nights after a safari in the Masa Mara. Overall we had a wonderful stay and it was very relaxed with great service. We had our 2 son's in their 20's with us. There were very few other people staying at the hotel, I'm not sure why, end of the season maybe? The weather was excellent! The villas were very private and perfect for us with a seperate twin room and en-suite and a nice living space between our master suite. The pool area of the hotel is beautiful and we really enjoyed sitting on the beach watching the changing tide. The food was very good but we were surprised to find a very limited set menu at dinner. There was a lack of atmosphere in an evening due to the few people in the resort ( 9 one evening including us 4! ) but well done to the hotel for trying to improve the ambience by setting dinner up on the beach one night, by the pool another and in a small courtyard another time. Food in the day much more varied with buffet breakfast and lunch and also an all day menu that could be taken anywhere. We did notice at the end of our stay that the buffets were being withdrawn, I guess as so few guests, and replaced with more set menus, and we were glad we only experienced this on our last day. We loved the reef on the beach which was something we had not experienced before, and a walk on it in reef shoes ( provided by hotel ) was really interesting. So many creatures to be found just knee deep in the water! For sure take this free walk with the watersports team. We also went out paddle boarding at high tide, and there were kayaks too. I would also hugely recommend the tour with the hotel to the Blue Lagoon, just a short car ride down the beach arranged via the watersports team ( $40 each ). The coral and the fish were amongst the best we have ever seen ( and better than Safari Blue snorkelling trip that we also did ). We had a very relaxing break, and we were very happy with our own company. There was a lack of entertainment and ambience that might have been more of an issue for us if we had just been there as a couple. On a slightly negative note, for a de-luxe property we felt the cosmetics in the bathroom were poor. Just a pump dispenser in the shower for shampoo and body wash....bring your own conditioner!!

An excellent resort for enjoying your vacation. The luxurious villa gives a sense of privacy, and the friendly and well-educated staff constantly takes care of you. They organized for us lunch on the beach under palm trees and a romantic dinner by the pool under the stars. We felt like royalty. The food is a story in itself, hearty, varied and deliciously prepared. And all this in a tropical paradise of tall palm trees and other lush greenery next to a sandy beach and turquoise sea. In short, a dream vacation Vesna and Neven

My husband and I stayed at Baraza for a week after 3 nights on safari in the Serengeti. It was our Honeymoon and we are both 20-somethings who are lucky to have previously stayed in some amazing places, including in the Maldives, so for us Baraza had a lot to live up to (especially given the price!) The overall first impression of the hotel is outstanding; the architecture is beautiful, the garden areas are stunning and very well maintained, the rooms are spectacularly clean, the food is 5*. Everything feels super luxurious and you really do feel like you're staying at a palace. But... Every night (except for one) of our 7-night stay was a five course sit down meal, although it is certainly special to dine in this way, to do this almost every night was a bit much for us. We think it would be better to either reduce this way of dining to a couple of nights a week, or to provide at least one other evening dining option - perhaps something fun/casual as the other option e.g. a beach BBQ? A live food station serving a local dish each night? Secondly, don't get us wrong, the staff are amazing and work extremely hard, however their interaction with guests is very scripted (this is most likely not individual's fault, but more management). Every time we sat down to eat (breakfast, lunch & dinner) we were asked the same couple of questions by each member of staff. We totally understand they were most likely trying to be polite, but it did get very repetitive over the week. It overall gave us the impression that staff are under strict instruction by management to only interact with guests in a certain way, to only ask a set list of questions and to not waive from this. In fact, we would feel much more comfortable if staff were able to show their individual personalities more, to have normal conversations with the guests (not simply serve them) and to have a bit of fun/laugh with the guests. Over the course of the week we just wanted to tell staff that it's ok! Chill out! We believe, and have experienced in other resorts, that you can absolutely provide a professional, 5* service whilst keeping it relaxed and fun. Thirdly, the beach... Obviously we understand the nature of the seafront is not the fault of the hotel, however how they advertise the beach and facilities is... Prior to our arrival we were under the impression that the sea would be clear blue water, perfect for partaking in the various activities the hotel offers (paddleboarding, snorkeling etc.) It is advertised to be like the Maldives... It is not! The water has so much seaweed floating about, the seabed is extremely rocky with sea urchins, sea snakes etc. almost right up to the shore. The hotel offers a sea walk out to a coral - I got 10 minutes into the walk and turned back - it was not pleasant walking over sharp rocks and dodging sea urchins/snakes constantly, this was one of the most horrendous experiences for me and I've done some pretty crazy things! My husband did complete the walk with another guest who actually stepped on a sea urchin - incredibly painful! Seeing the seabed during this walk completely put me off doing any of the water sport activities on offer, coupled with the fact that due to the wind, a lot of the time the water is very rough and not suitable for these sports anyway. In fact, in the afternoon the tide comes right in, completely covering the beach, so guests are not able to do any water sports for half of the day anyway. This was all a huge shame and meant there is not much to do during the daytime at the resort. This resort (and to be fair, most likely all resorts in Zanzibar) is not the right place if you are looking to be able to partake in water sports in a relaxed/family-friendly manner. However, above all, our main criticism of the hotel is the lack of entertainment. Given, there was a form of entertainment during the evening dining hours (in the way of being performed to whilst you eat), but as soon as 9pm hit and the dinner service was over, so was the entertainment. For us, we enjoy moving to the bar for a post-dinner drink, as others did, however by this point the lack of entertainment gave a very eerie feel to the resort and we couldn't shake this off. Imagine sitting at a bar in the evening in complete silence... the lack of atmosphere in this respect is what really let our time at the hotel down. Even something as simple as a live singer/musician each night around the bar area for a couple of hours would improve the overall vibe of the hotel massively. Nothing very loud, just some chilled out music to watch and enjoy whilst sipping a cocktail after dinner. We do think this lack of evening entertainment caused most guests to go back to their rooms straight after dinner meaning the bar was almost empty, which is unusual for being on holiday, further adding to the eeriness and lacking atmosphere of the resort. Overall, whilst the Baraza is certainly a special place, for us some simple improvements could massively enhance guest experience. As it stands, we would not recommend Baraza to family and friends since we have stayed in equally luxurious places like in the Maldives, for a much better price and have overall had a more fun experience. Perhaps it would be fair to say this resort is perfect if you are over 50 and looking for an extremely quite break. Anyone looking for more than just lying in the sun and eating/drinking, then Baraza is probably not for you!
