We’ve just returned from a fabulous 7 day stay at the Castello di Spaltenna and have no hesitation in recommending this wonderful hotel.

The building is beautiful but one must remember that it’s nearly 1000 years old; it has more character than you can imagine and was obviously not built with some of the luxuries that some may expect in a typical 5* hotel eg. There’s no lift, obviously, and we counted 77 steps from the pool up to our room 6 - great exercise!

The pool (and the view from it) is one of the best we’ve ever seen. It may be cold to start with but just get in and swim, it’s worth it, all 20+ metres of it!

We were very happy with our Deluxe room. It was a good size and the view was fantastic. A slight negative was that you could sometimes hear the neighbours in their bathroom, particularly at bedtime.

All staff, without exception, were extremely polite and attentive and all spoke English. Though we had very basic Italian to show willing..

Regarding the food at the hotel..
- Breakfast (buffet) was excellent. Plenty of cereal, pastries and fruit to choose from. Also bacon, sausages, mushrooms, scrambled eggs, smoked salmon etc. Eat as much as you like.
- Lunch and dinner was fine. Possibly our only little criticism was that the menu for lunch and dinner was the same and quite limited. There were 3 starters, mains and deserts and seeing that same menu twice a day for a week forces you to go elsewhere, which is a good thing.

The walk to the village was down a steep hill from the hotel; 6 minutes down, 10+ mins back up. In the village (Gaiole in Chianti), there are a number of restaurants which also served good food at half the price of the hotel and with a much larger choice. They certainly solved the issue of limited choice at the hotel.

So in summary, it’s a fabulous hotel with beautiful views and wonderful staff and we very much look forward to returning.

Spaltenna is a breathtaking castle in Gaiole Chianti, around a 30 minute drive from central Siena. Really beautiful surroundings with an incredible Michelin star restaurant. The service is fantastic throughout the hotel and they have dealt with the Covid situation really well.

Pro's

Fantastic food, great service, nice pool, beautiful surroundings and good location to access other sightseeing spots/wineries

Con's

Expensive, rooms are old fashioned, allowing kids to watch their iPads in a Michelin star restaurant! Also, and this may be Covid related, the spa wasn't at all relaxing and the massage was sub standard

All that said, I would definitely recommend a visit to Spaltenna, especially the restaurant

We had amazing 5 days at Spaltenna. The historic building and the traditional interior of our room was charming. The landscape surrounding the hotel was magnificent, it's green, calm and peaceful. Our day started with great breakfast on the terrace. The buffet had a nice range of varieties to offer, service was attentive and always friendly. We especially loved the pastries and cakes. Fresh orange juice came in large glasses, thats the way. We especially loved the housekeeping (thanks Laura!), which didnt just clean - it always went the extra mile, turning our room into a welcoming home. You come home from a long tour and find your slippers waiting for you, dimmed lamps and A/C turned on, fresh water on the nightstand. The staff generally was very good to us at all times, from reception to Guest Relations and Service. Its the small things that make the difference, such as the reception assisting us in packing a poster print for a flight. We got great recommendations for day tours. We made regular use of the spa, which offers everything you need to unwind. The deep tissue massage was outstanding. We also made use of the mountainbike rental, which went without any issues. The bikes are no e-bikes, but are quality bikes that can handle offroad tours. We didn't try out the restaurants in the hotel, instead we went to Gaiole (10 minute walk) and explored the plenty restaurants there. Perfection is hard to reach, but for us, Spaltenna made it quite near to it. Thanks for this great time. We would gladly come back and can recommend the place wholeheartedly.

We were on a girlfriends trip to celebrate couple of milestone birthdays and starting off our trip at this hotel was a perfect way to unwind and kick start our celebrations. The hotel is charming and the service was impeccable from everyone at the front desk to the wait staff at both the restaurants. Each room is unique with lovely views of the beautiful landscape. We reserved an hour at the spa to use the hot tub, sauna and cold showers etc. and it was a good way to get out of jetlag. Having drinks, dinner and breakfast with those views was divine. The first night we had dinner at L'Osteria with a 4 course tasting menu. Each course was a big enough meal and everything was so delicious. We somehow managed to eat all 4 courses. Spaltenna's rose wine was my most favorite through the whole Italy trip. Second night we had dinner at Michelin star Il Pievano and the presentation, service and meal were just perfect. Friends enjoyed touring the vineyard while I got a deep tissue massage at the spa. Didn't have a chance to use the pool but it looked lovely. There's an indoor pool as well. The location is great, close to Rome where we flew into, and then went on a day trip to Siena and San Gimignano. We all loved the hotel so much that we are thinking of going back there for a week with our families.

Tip: Buy wine by the bottle, not by glass. You'll thank me later. The serving size is small and their wines are so good you'll be happy you got a bottle.

This is truly a beautiful and special place to stay! The staff was wonderful and our room (Terrace View Suite) was lovely, although be advised that the walls are very thin (you can hear your neighbor blow their nose and carry on a conversation even at quiet talking levels). The grounds and view are exquisite, (breathtaking) and the spa looked fantastic (I regret not scheduling a spa day!) The location made a great base to explore all of Tuscany, with most towns and sites we wanted to see within a 10 - 90 minute drive. We would NOT recommend dining at La Terrazza (it was pretty horrible - the worst food I recall having in years dining out) but they do have a Michelin starred restaurant, Il Pievano worth considering. Overall I would stay here again, but perhaps request the Terrace View Suite on the end so that we only had one shared wall, to keep the noise down!

A beautiful place that sits atop a magnificent hill overlooking vineyards. The hotel restaurant is very good. We had breakfast there every day, dinner there once and many evening cocktails overlooking the beautiful view.

The town of Gaiole is small but pleasant with a few very good restaurants (Osteria Al Ponte is excellent!) and is located near many wineries.

The staff at the hotel was excellent! They met every request promptly and we’re very helpful.

Above all, the hotel’s infinity pool was the best place to relax after a morning of sightseeing and wine tasting. Floating at the edge and sipping an Aperol Spritz while marveling at the view was divine.

Be aware that there are no elevators and the hill side location does require some climbing of staircases and hill sides.

Overall, an excellent place to stay.

Beautiful historic building on a hilltop a few mins from Gaiole. The hotel is sympathetically restored to a high standard. Service throughout the hotel was excellent, the very specific guidance on parking in Siena was v helpful and considerate.

The hotel has lovely outside space where you can enjoy the location and views, including the pool area and outside terrace. Unfortunately during our two night stay the weather was temperamental, with a few showers, so we didn’t fully get the enjoy the pool area and the terrace was closed for breakfast and lunch on one day.

The spa is adequate, but then you don’t come to Tuscany to sit inside in a spa!

We ate in both the casual and Michelin restaurants. As you’d expect the Michelin restaurant is expensive, but it was a very memorable and enjoyable experience. As other reviews remarked the menu in the casual restaurant is limited, but it’s a relatively small hotel so that’s to be expected, and all food was v enjoyable (especially the tiramisu).

We had a disappointing stay at this hotel - while it is beautiful (especially the pool!) I would not consider this a 5* hotel by any means.

First the service was far from luxurious - no one to greet cars and take luggage, when I wanted to eat a quick dinner after my long plane ride I was told this was not possible without a reservation (at the casual hotel restaurant, not the Michelin star one) despite the restaurant being far from full and the hotel being pretty far up the hill from the town with no other options within the immediate vicinity. When we did have breakfast and lunch at the restaurant the staff were unpleasant and food was mediocre and overpriced.

The room felt very cramped and outdated, with only semi functional air conditioning. Mattress and pillows were uncomfortable - far from 5* standard. No safe, no full size mirror.

If you want a charming low key hotel to base yourself as you explore the region during the day, then this place is great. I would not drive there specifically to spend time at the hotel, as it is not particularly luxurious nor does the service offered warrant the price.

We stayed two nights during our trip to Italy. I will start by saying this is one of the most beautiful properties in a beautiful region of Chianti. The room was fantstic and the grounds were outstanding. Most of the staff were kind and professional. I had a fantastic massage by one of the spa staff members. You may be wondering why I'm giving this three stars. In order to receive a four star rating from me I must be willing to stay there again. Due to our treatment by two of the restaurant wait staff (dinner) I would not be interested in a second visit.

On our first night we made dinner reservations at the cellar restaurant for 8:30 pm (a very normal dinner time in Italy). I ordered my first course and asked the waiter if I could wait a bit to order something else (wasn't sure how full I would be from the first course). He informed me that this would make the chef angry so I needed to place the entire order at once. He indicated the kitchen would be closing at 9.

On the second night we returned from a day's worth of adventure, tired and interested in room service. We stopped by the front desk and asked how we could get room service. We were told the wait staff would not be happy but to stop by the (same) restaurant on the way to our room and place an order. When we attempted to do so we were told it was too late. There was no other place to get food so we asked if we could get something light, easy, maybe just a snack or dessert.

The waiter (same from the previous night) indicated with some attitude that we could sit outside the restaurant and get a dessert (I should say many diners were still eating in the restaurant at this time).

While the food we ate was good, it was overpriced and didn't warrant the level of pretentiousness that accompanied it. Aside from these experiences we would have given this hotel a 5 star review. Our trip to Italy was filled with faboulous meals, service and experiences. This was the only time we felt unwelcomed in any place we visited.

Dear Mrs. Pgjudy, we want to thank you for choosing Castello di Spaltenna and for sharing your personal experience from your recent stay with us. We are really sorry to learn about your disappointment with our restaurant. Please accept our most sincere apologies for not having fulfilled your expectation. You have reported many aspects concerning the restaurant service for which we think it is appropriate to clarify a few things. We usually suggest that Guests order all courses to avoid extremely long wait times when ordering others later. As you may have seen, Castello di Spaltenna is a large and very dispersed property. We make no secret of the fact that these aspects can create many difficulties for the restaurant's room service, which is nonetheless available Hoping to welcoming again at Castello di Spaltenna, with best regards remain Alessandro Ercolani General Manager

Stayed 2 nights at this stunning property and it did not disappoint. The staff are incredibly helpful and gracious, the grounds and pool are impeccably maintained and our breakfast each morning was a delicious buffet. The Inn offers a lovely option to rest and relax or explore the many nearby hill towns and wineries. I can’t recommend it enough and look forward to returning.
