Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful old building with huge bedrooms. We were upgraded to some of their feature rooms having originally booked rooms in their annexe. Lyndsey on reception was a star, very welcoming and great with recommendations about where to go in Malton. The rooms are a little tired but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return!

I am gutted. Such a beautiful location, so much potential but I paid £5.10 for a pint of Diet Coke. Disgusting. No tap water available because of a softener so you had to buy bottled, you cannot legally not have free water available. Prices seemed to be made up £5.10 for a pint of Diet Coke and yet my friend bought 10 drinks (6 single spirits and mixers, one pint of peroni, two 1/2 pint diet cokes and a bottle of cider) for £42.50 how does that maths work? Other friends bought two of the same round and paid two different prices. Such a shame as the staff were nice enough and the location is lovely but the prices feel like a scam especially when they don’t seem to have any kind of set price.

Oh my goodness. What have they done to the place? Used to be reasonably upmarket but a recent refurb seems to have shut off by far the nicest bar, the snug is now a hovel and the main bar is a cheap and nasty counter in a soulless room where people seem expected to have a meal whilst other people make a racket boozing. Outside is full of drunks, they didn't have any glasses when I went and the place stinks of weed.

I stayed at The Old Lodge form a night and it was neat and comfortable with friendly helpful staff. There is a small carpark for three or four cars, and the beach facing the Isle of Wight is nearby. To be recommended.

A two night stay for a family funeral, with the wake also being held here. I took my 94 year old Mum to Alverstoke for the funeral of her first cousin and childhood pal, for a couple of nights to ensure we could travel to and from the Channel Islands without having to rush. My brother, from York, also stayed for a night. The lady behind the bar greeted us and made sure we were shown to comfortable rooms. They have a lift for the infirm or wheelchair bound and this was welcome after a long journey. Although my Mum being the impatient type preferred to use the stairs. The fire door for the stairs was however very heavy to open. John, his staff, and regulars, made sure my mother was well looked after and there was a real feel of the hotel being a pleasant place for locals to dine or come for a drink as well as being a home from home for regular visitors. Breakfast was all you could wish for and dining offered a nice selection at reasonable prices. The wake was well prepared with sandwiches and other bites (I liked the pate and cucumber on Ritz biscuits), and the room ample for the fifty or so guests. Well done John and all his staff.

Popped in for a drink on a sunny Saturday afternoon with my wife and 6 year old son. Sat in the beer garden as the sun was shining and minding our own business to then witness - the local 60+ year old woman drunk shout out children should not be in a pub garden whilst describing how she goes like the clappers . your wish will come true as we will never return. Worth noting she was sat on the staff table and may even work in the bar. A real shame as could be a good venue if the owner got control of these morons and ensured it was as they describe a family friendly venue.
