Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were staying over the road in Cabalva farms excellent Mill Cottage and they recommended this - reputedly the oldest pub in Herefordshire. It certainly looks the part inside with its beams and unevenly sized doors but it was very comfortable near the firte and the service was great and so friendly. The beer was excellent Most of the food was excellent especially the home made soup and puddings but I would say the fish and chips was slightly disappointing as I found the batter a bit soft rather than crispy. I would definitely go back - it is a very popular place.

Visited here for our first visit following a muddy and wet walk across from Hay on Wye. Sadly the welcome was not what we expected. We were slow entering the pub as collapsing umbrellas and told off as the door was open too long. We then chose a table and again told off we couldn’t sit at the table we liked as would obstruct the waitress serving. The waitress was not chatty or welcoming despite our apologies and tried to engage in chit chat. The food was lovely and the waitress slowly became more friendly but first impressions were not positive.Overall good food, beer and wine .

We enjoyed a decent meal. Even though it was overpriced (and the drinks even more so) this would not put us off. However, the behaviour of the owners was appallingly rude. The woman likes to drink and engage with the "locals" while berating the customers with her opinions, the man (her husband?) just rude and passive- aggressive. It's a pity as its a nice building/ setting and not much competition in the area but would not go back with these owners, especially after reading some of the other reviews (where we feel we may have escaped lightly!) Our waiter was lovely and I hope is treated better than the customers

Had a tasty lunch in the garden. Everything was pristine, the grass was cut and there were some lovely flowers and a great view. We had an excellent food service. Steak and ale pie, homemade beef lasagne followed by Bakewell tart and summer fruits pavlova. The butty Bach was an excellent pint and the Pinot wine was cold and crisp. To extend our lunch break we lingered and finished off with coffees. Didn’t want to leave……

What made this Hotel so special was the hosts Lowry and Mark, very friendly, made us welcome into their 14 Century Hotel. Good size bedrooms, clean and functional. They provide good food. The place is thriving with tourists and locals alike. A proper pub Feel to top it up. Gorgeous garden To relax at the end of a busy time sight seeing . We stayed there 3 nights. The only reservation would be for elderly people, the strairs to the bedrooms are a challenge.

We had booked dinner last night and despite having checked the menu by phone( as we are aware that they often change due to covid) it was not as per the call or the website . We did mention this to the waitress who said that no one remembered the call despite them accepting that they had a booking. I had just a bowl of chips -the portion was small and the bottom third of the bowl of chips was burnt and greasy. On the positive side the desserts were both good. Finally on the bill we were overcharged for the curry and when this was pointed out at the bar, the lady just said "oh yeah"- no further comment or apology given.

Whilst visiting family in nearby Hay we stopped in for lunch. It was a Sunday but by 2pm they had run out of salmon so the options were a roast or chilli, which given it was 28 degrees neither were particularly appealing. They were not serving starters due to social distancing, so I went with the veggie chilli. It was inoffensive, or better described as very average. The dessert menu was far better and I went for the Baileys cheesecake which was very very good. Overall I wouldn’t rush back given the number of nearby pubs serving food, but I would also not object to returning.

Food is delicious. However, our party were left disappointed and hungry with the quantity. This is ‘pub grub’ after all. Paying £25 for a steak and chips but being expected to share a bowl of chips between 3 people is unacceptable.
