Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Came here with my wife, her brother and his wife. We enjoyed the stay - it was great to go into Hay on Wye, browse the bookshops, and know we could return the the Rhydspence to recharge our batteries during the day. We ate here each of the three nights we stayed - the menu didn't change but there was enough choice to suit us all, although my wife would have fared better with a wider range of vegetarian dishes that didn't involve curry or spices. Waking up to the sound of a delivery truck outside the window at 4.30 a.m. wasn't the best experience and my brother in law and his wife had a lot of noise filtering up from the bar in the older part of the building. That said, the bar was relaxing for evening drinks, too, and if you book direct the room prices are cheaper than on here!

Visited for Sunday lunch, coincidentally on the anniversary of my daughter's birth....at the Rhydspence. The only one of my family born in England, only just though. I've visited the Rhydspence many times since we left and have been met with indifferent staff and food. However I went there yesterday for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised at the welcome. Delicious foodserved efficiently by polite and smiling staff. A joy, will return.

Called in the Rhydspence for a drink and a gander at the bulding. Nice drop of beer, but the building and surrounding grounds stole the show. Amazing 14th century charm, creaky old floors, with wonky beams and an external structure that looks like it defies gravity! Will certainly return to sample the food and hotel rooms.

Came across this place by chance after visiting Hay-on-Wye. Lovely sunday lunch and very quick service in a unusual old pub dating back to 1830, The guest ales on tap were very good too. Thanks very much

Spent the night here visiting Hay and walking locally. Room was charming, service friendly and personal while leaving us with the space we wanted. Our evening meal was excellent too. Great place to go for a romantic stay

We loved our 2 night stay here. Not only will you stay in an old inn steeped in history, you will also be very warmly welcomed by the owners. The bar is friendly and busy with locals, the food is good pub food, the rooms are comfortable (although the bed a little short for us 5'10"!), the location is beautiful and great if you're visiting Hay, like we were. We would definitely recommend.

We have eaten at The Rydspence a couple of times before and really enjoyed it, however this time was very disappointing. I ordered Fillet Steak medium rare, I was served a well done steak that was not a fillet, I should have sent it back but had waited a very long time to be served. Usually a member of staff asks if everything is ok but they were so busy that no one bothered otherwise I would have mentioned it. I think they had overbooked that night because everything was disappointing. I may go back and give it another chance because my previous visits were so good.

We had not been to the Rhydspencce for several years but it is now under new management and well worth a visit. The local draught beer Butty Bach is superb and the very old (13th Century) building has great charm and a lovely atmosphere. The food is also very good although not quite as good as The Castlefield. Overall it's a close run thing, for charm and atmosphere The Rhydspence wins, for food The Castlefield is still the best in the area.

Celebrating 40years of marriage, so decided too pop to the Rhydspence for our dinner. We had a very warm welcomie. Saw smiling faces behind the bar, very attentive, we were served our drinks with a smile, then showed to our table in the Snug. A very relaxed atmosphere, just what we love. I had the salmon, my husband had the steak and ale pie. Both meals were delicious. A very pleasant way to spend our special day. We will definitely be going back. Highly recommended! If your passing the Rhydspence you should stop, if not for a meal perhaps a drink in the beautiful beer garden. Thank you all, be back soon.
