We were staying at a local B&B and the owner mentioned the Boat Inn as a good place to eat so we ate there both nights. First night I had Scampi and my wife the fish and chips and portions were a good size, hot and tasty. On the second night we both had steak, but had to opt for the bigger sized steak as they had run out of the 8oz and 10oz which is what we would have went for as we don’t eat big portions. My wife likes her steak medium to well done and when it came it was medium I would say as still quite pink but she said rather than ask for it to be done little more she would eat it ok. I like mines medium rare and I would say mines was perfect. Because we had to have the larger steak we didn’t eat the chips or veg, just the onion rings and mushrooms. A little grisly but not too bad and again hot and tasty.

I would go back when we are next in this area as all in all it’s good food and not too expensive considering what you are served.

This establishment will always have a nice place in my heart. This is where I broke the news to my old Friend Clive, that I am actually his biological father. We shared a Larger and Lime over a plate of chips. It’s funny because now living in Gloucester, I have missed out on spending time with my boy due to being on call with my new patio repair business. But now I have a reason to be back in Herefordshire, I will be back here with Clive, my wife Rose and the General in the future. I especially look forward to meeting the Chef, Pablo again. He was a great laugh.

As a Hospitality Trainer/Assessor I always attempt to give a balanced view of any reviews I write. But this will be the exception to my rule. Having visited The Boat Inn with my wife I can find no reason to give any negative comments. I arrived first and was greeted in a friendly welcoming manner by the host. When my wife arrived we tried to decide what to have for dinner but this was a difficult choice as all the options sounded tempting. After much deliberation I chose the walnut & mushroom pate as a starter but my wife decided not to have a starter as she is a slave to the desert menus. The starter arrived on a rather large plate which contained a very well presented lovely fresh crisp salad. a slice of pate the size of a cheque book and width of a cigarette packet this was accompanied by side relish and about 8 triangles of lightly toasted bread. I tried each component on its own at first and though umm that tastes rather nice, then I combined them together on my slice of toasted bread and the flavour and texture must rate as one of the best pate`s I have ever tasted. For main course we ordered steak & mushroom pie with salad and chips and braised venison steak with red wine jus and seasonal veg. The mains arrived on oval dishes the size of a serving tray to accommodate the portions of food. The pie had a lovely light puff pastry case which contained a generous filling of steak that melted in your mouth and the venison steak was exactly the same. The vegetables were cooked to perfection and the chips were proper home made ones. Again the salad was fresh and the dressing complimented it perfectly. The only comment we could make was that both the jus and gravy could have been a little richer in flavour but this is only a matter of personal taste and by no way a criticism. We both cleared our plates and felt very satisfied with our choices. I felt as full as a stuffed pig and declined a desert but my wife still had a little room left to accommodate one. She eventually chose a Mars Bar Cheese cake with pouring cream ( I know the thought sounds very strange ) however when the said desert arrived my wife insisted I try a little taste of it so I reluctantly obliged her request. Oh what a mistake to make. The taste sensation that hit my mouth was amazing the combination of flavours was a match made in heaven so I made a complete hog of myself and ordered one as well before I chomped my way through the rest of my Wife's portion. I once had the privilege of working in a hotel with a very fine pastry/desert chef who now works for a celebrity chef in London and would rate this desert on par with anything he produced. I also found out that the same chef in the Boat Inn cooks the meals from fresh. Now I know some people will think oh yeah but how much did this meal set you back well it came to a little over £40 which included a latte coffee and I thought this was superb value for the standard of food produced. I would recommend to anyone just in the area to try the Boat Inn but would also suggest that it would be worth going the extra miles to sample the food and service here. GREAT FOOD GREAT SERVIVE AND GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY

Table booked for 7.30, starters arrived just before 9pm, mains delivered bit by bit, all plates came out but all had to wait for their accompanying vegetables &/or chips- most odd! My meal did not come at all, I was asked again what had I ordered, after several minutes , it's now gone 9.30. I'm told it was missed & that a duck was to be taken out if the freezer- to which I replied don't bother ,my meal will be out after everyone else has finished , I was told that it was already out of the freezer & that it wouldn't be long. Within 5 minutes my duck arrived, no veg ,no new potatoes...I was brought chips, I advised I had not ordered chips but veg and new potatoes! The sides did eventually arrive. The half duck was split into two, the leg was lovely but the breast and attached wing was just too far gone, over cooked , dry and I couldn't cut it with a knife , I just pulled it apart & left it. Was offered 2 desserts for the price of one , I declined this as there was birthday cake ,so no-one ate desserts. I was given a complimentary drink & ultimately my meal was taken off the bill. The waiter was extremely sorry, I felt sorry for him to be honest . Several other guests had sides missing ,so all in all I would not advised a visit in a party larger than 4 maybe .
Glad to get home to a cup of tea !
I would visit again ,but no more than the 4 of us, we shall see in the next few months perhaps.

We had booked a table for 4 for Sunday lunch and we’re told someone was sat at our table so we were shown to another. Then we were told that table was for someone else and moved to a side room at the other side of the pub where about 15 men were having a ‘loud’ meal.
We ordered our drinks but the order was incorrect and we had to ask for it to be sorted.
We all ordered Sunday Lunch which was quite mediocre - hard roast potatoes and swimming in gravy.
On asking for the bill at the end of the meal, we were charged £108 and after questioning it, they corrected it to £81. No apologies whatsoever and the waitress just turned her back on us and played with her hair !
Would not recommend ☹️

Having read some good reviews on the Facebook page recently, we decided we'd give the boat a try, so myself and 2 friends met here for dinner. I wish we had looked at trip advisor first. Where to actually start, we had booked a table, on arrival told we could have that one, squished in between 2 other full tables with our chairs touching the others either side. Most of the staff wore masks, our server did not, and leant over the table on more than one occasion making us feel very uncomfortable. Service was unfriendly, slow and clearly the staff took no pride in their jobs. We all had a sirloin steak, not one was cooked as it was ordered and although I did ask for well done as I am pregnant, I did not expect a burnt tough steak, the chips and tomatoes were nice but 1 lonely onion ring and some rubbery mushrooms. I fully appreciate steak is best served medium rare and usually choose this but my friend's, who ordered medium, was so suitably overdone i could have eaten it. We weren't checked on at all and having a nice time chatting with friends didn't want to make a scene. Still hungry I chose the lotus cheesecake for dessert, accompanied by the smallest scoop of icecream I've ever seen and lumps of undissolved Gelatin throughout the cheesecake which i picked out and left on the slate. After a very underwhelming meal and terrible service we left feeling deflated, only to be very sick later that evening and my friend also unwell throughout the night. I privately messaged the Boat to make them aware of all of this in the hope only that they would address my concerns. Danny asked me to call him which I did only for him to refute all responsibility, say on multiple occasions I'm not calling you a liar BUT... and to tell me the tables are distanced appropriately. My chair touching the diners behind is NOT acceptable social distancing, to which he implied I must be large. I might be pregnant but at a size 10 I'm not exactly obese. When I tried to explain this he spoke over me and called me rude. I'm sorry but this is not how you run a business or how you treat customers coming to you with concerns. No solution was offered and no willigness to investigate any wrong doing. I certainly will not be returning and just hope noone else gets ill or worse from their lack of concern. Just a final note, They also will no longer be participating in the eat out scheme as we were told they just don't need the extra business. This was the only aspect Danny did want to address properly and as I said, I won't be returning so it really is no bother to me if they choose not to,but more fool them.

We called at this lovely pub on the off chance of having a nice lunch. A very helpful gentleman found us a table overlooking the river, despite our not having booked and it being a busy Saturday lunchtime on a glorious day. Our waitress introduced herself as Meg and was wonderfully helpful and efficient. The food was delicious and the atmosphere friendly. The location is superb and next time we visit Hay-On-Wye, we will venture those extra few miles to revisit this pub. Thank you and congratulations on having such a wonderful team of staff.

On our first visit we had a lovely experience good food nice service. The next day after canoeing we were told to put our boats by the back while we waited for our return lift back.

Went in the bar bought food and drink while we waited. The owner was rude to the guys picking us up and rude to us for parking our boats on the verge we were advised to.

Apparently he isn’t a very pleasant person. Sad because this canoe company brings trade to his pub.

Then the wife refuses a family who were easing and drinking of using the river.

Not sure the wye valley river belongs to this establishment but wouldn’t go back.

No need for rudeness.

We found this pub after being in Hay on Wye and didn't like the area, and all the restaurants being over priced and pretentious. Had a quick look online and found this place.
We booked a table but when we arrived it was really quiet. The waitress asked if we wanted to sit on the terrace outside. Did not realise what a beautiful setting this place had! A huge river running alongside side with so much wildlife, it was so beautiful! We saw fish jumping out the river and so many different types of birds!
The menu has a good selection and good pricing. The food itself was so good! The portions are quite big as well, just as well as we were so hungry!
I had nachos to start with and they were made with mozzarella! The portion was huge! My husband doesn't like nachos but he ate these with me. All the food we have was brilliant. We were recommended the Kit Kat Chunky cheesecake which we couldn't say no too. We had a great time! I would highly recommend this place, it was just all round a great place to be.

Thank you to our waitress. I think her name was Jaz? Sorry if I've got that wrong. Thanks so much for having us.
