We stayed at High Tipalt and had a fantastic 5 days here with my daughter and friends.
The cottage is spacious and very well laid out. It's warm and welcoming. Wood-burner glowing when we arrived.
The children got to feed the sheep and collect eggs from the hens free of charge. Susan also sold us some excellent local produce which they has available.
The views from the cottage are exceptional as is the surrounding countryside.
My daughter left some clothes there by mistake. Susan sent these back to me and even though I offered payment for the delivery she covered the cost. Above and beyond the call of duty. Would totally recommend this cottage and will certainly ne returning at some point.

Just back from a five day break in hope sike, a very pleasant experience, clean, comfortable and well equipped, suitable for a couple and very dog friendly.
Pleasant helpful and knowledgeable owners and staff made our stay a good one, our dog enjoyed walks in the locality and play with the resident dogs.
A peaceful place, away from everything and such wonderful dark skies which were a wonder to behold.

We have stayed here on so many occasions over 20 years! As a couple to a family with dogs. We love coming up here walking around the local area and just chilling at the cottages. It’s remote but that is part of the charm. It may be cold outside but having a log fire going makes it feel special.

+1
What an absolutely gorgeous place. Homely, clean, warm with very pleasant help from Sarah and HRT Lenny.
We stayed in Hope Sike. We had 4 dogs with us. The cottage has every thing needed, even towels and throws for sofa for dogs.
New “Emma” mattresses were very comfortable.
Views to die for. Great walking and mountain biking.
Even sell their own meat and eggs.

For those booking to use the pool then you will be very disappointed, it is dirty, algae ridden and just not fit for use, as is the games room.
Our cottage was tired but functional, the hot water pressure was hit and miss which meant showering was not pleasant and running a bath took nearly an hour.
The cottage was not dirty but in need of a very good clean. The farm yard left a lot to be desired but nothing a good days tidying up would nt put right.
On the plus side the cottage was well appointed and a good size, it was dog friendly ( the main reason we selected it) and the owners were pleasant but did not intrude in our stay.
The cottage is 15minutes from the military road and very remote, this should not be a suprise for anyone however.
In summary, if you want a basic holiday cottage for spending time around Hadrians Wall then it is fine, if you are expecting anything more or the use of the pool then think again.

We have just returned from a most enjoyable 4 days at the farm.
We are a family of five, three children and two labradors. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were made to feel really welcome. Especially the children. We had a very cosy cottage ( Hawthorne ). Very clean and had everything we needed. We enjoyed exploring the farm, the forest and the stream. We also had great fun in the swimming pool and games room. Susan and Andrew were very welcoming and informative.
We particularly enjoyed the company of Sadie.
If you are considering taking a holiday here I would strongly encourage you to do so. You will not regret it!

We are just back from a wonderful week in High Tipalt cottage, a group of 6 friends and 4 dogs. The privilege of being able to work my dogs on fields not occupied by sheep and lambs was hugely appreciated. After training for an hour in the morning, we all went for lovely long walks in the forest, often walking for 3 hours plus. If you want a relaxed, very dog friendly holiday I urge you to go, there are not many places like this to stay where the owners are so welcoming of both humans and dogs, we'll be back.

We booked the cottage "High Tipalt" for a week in early October the weather was initially very windy and wet, but it cleared into a beautiful week.we were there with two other couples and their dogs who were very welcome. The open fire in the living room kept the cottage lovely and warm and the views of the open countryside were second to none.
If your looking for somewhere in the middle of nowhere this is the place. The nearest big town Hexham in roughly 40 mins away.
The drive to the cottage takes you over the wall at Caw Pass and a further 2-3 miles takes you onto an unmade road down to the farm.
The cottage has its own washing machine with a laundry room across the yard with a great dryer to get your washing dry.
One down side was that of the three bedrooms only one had a shower with the other two having baths and the water pressure was very poor and it took around half an hour to run a bath in the morning.
In general the cottage lived up to its hype. For a very rural, out of the way cottage where you are left to your own devices and you have an interest in Roman history this is definitely the place to go.
Take advantage of the farm dogs Sadie and Heidi's company, something to eat and their your friends for the stay.

we just got back from a week staying at the Hawthorne Cottage, part of the Scotchcoulthard Self Catering Cottages. It was myself and my husband, my sister in law and our friend Mel. We decided to take my sister in law away in honour of her 60th birthday and we thought a week in the country with nothing important to do other than eat, read, sleep and take in the local landscape and history.
When we first got to the house after the drive from Nottinghamshire, we followed he directions sent to me by Susan and Andy which were easy to follow and brought us to the very long rocky driveway. There was no one there when we arrived so we noticed that the door to the cottage was unlocked and we were instantly greeted by Sadie the Jack Russell and Meg, Heidi and Finn all Labradors. When we opened the door and started to head in there was someone there, the housekeeper/friend of the family and she said we were fine to go in. When we did we were met with a proper lovely cottage that had all the makings of "you are in the country now". There was a lovely lemon cake waiting for us and we quickly put the kettle on and went to explore the upstairs (as well as a guided tour of the downstairs by 3 of the lovely dogs ). Upstairs are 3 bedrooms all with en-suites, 2 with double beds and one with 2 twin beds. My husband and I took the room all the way to the left which had a stone wall and a very high ceiling with gorgeous beams and all of these rooms had views that were incredible. you could see so far when there was no cloud. We had to walk through the room with the twin beds to get to ours but the walls are so thick that it just doesn't matter and this is no big deal at all.
The bed in our room at least was amazing and so incredible comfortable, not only the mattress but the pillows and the duvet just wrapped you perfectly and when you turn the lights off to go to bed, there is not one ounce of light anywhere and the silence is just beautiful. what a great nights sleep we all had. Not only is there no light pollution up there, there is no noise at all, the only thing you hear is the cows and the sheep and the occasional member of your family snoring haha.. The en-suites were lovely although the water pressure is non-existent but that is because the water comes from a tank and is not on the grid. our shower literally had dribbles coming out but my sister in laws was better and actually had water coming out of the shower so we used hers. That being said, all of the bathrooms were super clean and the towels were big and soft and plenty of them!!!
The downstairs was really nice and comfortable and homely. We literally spend all evening after dinner and just sat and read and talked and although there is a big modern TV, it only went on when the England Women's semi final was on and that was it. Never missed it, we didn't need it. My only comment with the cozy front room are the toss pillows on one of the couches could be replaced. They were a bit tattered and I think just would need 2 new ones. There is also NO internet while you are there. Every now and again my phone would ping with a message but 99.9% absolutely nothing.. BUT you don't need or miss it when you have those views around you. Just sitting and looking outside with one of the dogs with you was pure perfection. Better than anything I could see on the internet. The landscape is stunning so worthy of all your attention.
The kitchen looks like a proper country kitchen with all the modern cooking items you need. We cooked dinner a couple of times and had our breakfast there and it was just like cooking at home. you had everything you needed and is a comfortable place to just sit and chat, which we did with endless cups of tea.
This location is a perfect spot for checking out what this part of Northumberland has to offer. You are not far at all from all the Roman Heritage sites such as Vindolanda and Houseteads which are both pretty cool as well as day trips to Newcastle, Durham, Hexam, Alnmouth and Carlisle. All of which we did. There are also plenty of things to see in the area as this part of the world is steeped in history. The landscape around as well is just pure beauty. We all just wanted to go somewhere where we could just chill and enjoy and this did not disappoint at all.#
My only complaint of these lovely self catering cottages is the pool. What a bonus and treat to have an indoor pool on your doorstep, literally. Although, it is a good size the pool itself could really use a very good scrub and the lining needs to be fixed. There was some stuff floating, which looked like a huge clump of dog hair and some other stuff but there was no net to fish it out which we would have done. There is a great games room and kitchen area all attached to this pool area and again, what a great bonus this is but it needs some TLC. We only went the once as I wasn't really wanting to go back in.
All in all, this place is really fantastic, we even had the RAF practicing overhead one of the mornings. It was loud and thrilling to watch them come over. It was like a private show and we were told that they often do practice. Was quite cool.
I already miss Sadie, what a cutie and all of them actually, so sweet and loving and just want some attention and a biscuit and they are happy. they get to wander freely and they will come to your door and wait for you...
A definite place to stay if you plan on a trip up this way. Well worth it and I would love to go back.

Response from Susan S, Owner at Scotchcoulthard Self-Catering Holiday Cottages
Responded 7 Aug 2017
I am pleased you enjoyed staying with us and it was lovely to meet you. I will check the water pressure in the shower in your bathroom as it should be better than a trickle! The pool is just one long problem! We have not long changed the lining but decided a few years ago to use bromine not chlorine in the water as it is not as bad for asthma sufferers. However, we didn't realise that the bromine would react to the iron in our water and turned everything yellow - hence the staining. We have scrubbed many times to no avail. I am sorry about the net it was probably in the room at the back. I'll blame my husband for that! We probably do need to change the lining again at some stage but it can take weeks to fill the pool as you can imagine. However, the winter maintenance priorities this year are to insulate the downstairs of Hawthorn, re-carpet the living room and install a new kitchen. Also install a shower in Hope Sike and finish the kitchen in the games room area. The pool may be year after!

Just back from a week at Scotchcoulthard - stayed in Hope Sike cottage with our three dogs. Susan and Andy are really lovely and made us so welcome. The cake she left for us on arrival was just delicious and we took slices out with us every day on our walks. The cottage is small but perfectly fine for two people -not to mention three retrievers! We were joined on some walks with Sadie and Heidi, two of their dogs and we couldn't stop laughing at Sadie's antics. Totally recommend this for a get away from it all holiday. Will definitely try to fit in another visit next year. Highly recommended if you like peace and quiet, stunning scenery and the warmest of welcomes. Just wish we'd packed swimming costumes to take advantage of the lovely indoor pool - next time!
