#7 of 15 B&Bs / Inns in Haltwhistle
Travellers' Choice
This is Haltwhistle’s most historic building. The oldest part of the hotel was a Border Reivers' Pele Tower, dating from the 15th Century. Later it became a Manor House, Excise Office, Coaching Inn, Post Office, Temperance Hotel, Pub and Cafe. In 1997 we completely refurbished the building, finding many archaeological and architectural features - many of which have been included in the presentation of the reborn Hotel. The result – a combination of modern comfort & Tradition. We have a total of 12 bedrooms, all individually designed many with original architectural features. All have private bathrooms and are equipped with TV, radio, direct dial telephones, hospitality trays and hair dryers. We have a secure car park at the rear of the hotel with direct access to the rearSo, there is something for everyone, but most of all a warm welcome with a relaxed style and atmosphere to make you feel at home.

We wasted a morning here and it's like the land of the living dead. This place needs a cash injection the shops were great if you like scope, charity shops, superdrug etc. Nothing for tourists here it's tired and run down. The only building that looked decent was the hospital.

The hotel and restaurant is looking promising from the outside, with white linen tablecloths and a nice „interieur“. With high expectations came sadly a disappointement: First the advertised menu outside wasn‘t available, second the steak was well-done instead of medium and third the veggies (like the whole presentation) was without care and honestly just thrown on a plate. Same experience for my friends. Would rather recommend going in a pub...

Stayed here with hf holidays as we were walking 45 miles of Hadrians Wall. Fabulous hotel, nothing was too much trouble. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Food was fab, my vegan options were well thought out and I had a very good choice. Staff were lovely. A great place to stay, I thoroughly recommend it.

Thanks for your feedback, Mel. More and more Vegans are visiting us now and we are well aware of their needs. Hope we can keep improving in varying the Vegan meal choices. You and you friends were great to entertain last week and we especially admired your efforts when dressing up as Romans for our Roman evening! Welcome back to The Centre of Britain David & Grethe

Apologies for the delay in writing this but wanted to say what a lovely hotel this is. I stayed two nights here as part of a walking group and was lucky enough to be allocated Suite A , in the Dairy. This is a beautifully renovated suite in an old building which still retains the old beams and fireplaces. It has a large bedroom with king size bed, a separate living room on a lower level with television, chairs and settee and a spotless bathroom. Everything was very clean. They provided an excellent breakfast, a three course evening meal with plenty of choice and the hotel is centrally located near several pubs. The bus stop is virtually outside and the train station a short walk away. The only thing I would say is the this suite may not be suitable for anyone with mobility

Thank for your feed back - we seem to be seeing more Pennine way walkers this year - hope more walkers will use the Centre of Britain as a base. Suite A does have differing levels. It is a revival of an old Bastle House from the 1500's Old architecture with modern comfort! - But we do take the mobility of our guests into account when suggesting room choices. Boot Tray - good suggestion. We are sourcing some suitable boot trays. They'll work well in our the bathrooms as all the floors have underfloor heating and they have a heated towel rail to dry off wet clothing. Also if anyone does get really wet we do have the adjacent launderette where clothes can be dried. Welcome back to the Centre of Britain David & Grethe

Each year we set off cycling around our lovely countryside. We’ve stayed in so many hotels and guest houses and enjoyed most. This hotel though was a step above our usual. The service from David and staff was excellent, the food we couldn’t find fault and the rooms were all stunning. Thanks for a lovely stay. Only one down side, we only stayed the one night. Kev, Vicky & group
