A small, family-run establishment, the West Loch Hotel dates from around 1780, and is well known locally for having some of the best food in the area. We are well placed for guests passing through, and for those wishing to spend longer in the area, exploring Argyll & the Isles. Ideally located for people heading on the whisky trail to Islay (just minutes from the ferry), most guests find our large whisky selection the perfect start to their adventure! A charming, former coaching inn, the hotel has been sympathetically modernised over the years, retaining many of its original features. Our rooms are dog-friendly, with a choice of double or single rooms, and we have also got family rooms available for those travelling with children. Able to cater for small events, from birthday parties to weddings, we always go the extra mile to make sure your special occasion is extra special.

We stayed here on the 12th and 13th February. A very warm welcome from Bethany who could not do enough for us. First the negatives. This hotel is situated on a fairly busy road, traffic noise is quite bad if you are in a front facing room. There is a twenty minute walk into

Smashing wee hotel. Great food and lovely staff. We had Room #1, which had a great view onto the Loch. Good size room, comfy bed and very clean and tidy. Dinner and breakfast both very good too. Would definitely stay here again if visiting Tarbert.

Apart from being a lovely place to have a quiet drink this is a real find. My family are associated with Tarbert and have used this hotel for functions. We do not need accommodation in Tarbert but if we did this is a cosy oldie worldy hotel which serves good food and lovely

First time here. Hotel is what you expect for West coast, ok, clean. Staff, however, were extremely welcoming, chatty, helpful and engaging. Couple drinks and we were looking forward to our meals. Dining room was pleasant and warm on a nasty evening. Food... prawn cocktail, too

Regrettably we suffered the same fate as SuzyMcL (see separate review. We selected the hotel because it advertises itself as dog friendly. Their website states that 'Dogs are welcome in all bedrooms and reception rooms'. At dinner, my wife and I (and Molly the Retriever) were

Response from Alison M, Owner at West Loch Hotel
Responded 30 Oct 2018
Hi Roland H, Thank you for your review. I did say I would look forward to responding. I understand the Chart Room wasn’t to your liking however it is a regularly used dining area within the hotel for guests with and without dogs and your description is misleading. Our waitress asked several times what the issue was as you made it clear there was something wrong, however ‘I’ll let the chef know in my own way’ was your initial response to be finally told the pork was a bit dry but you would eat it anyway and your wife’s plate was cold but the food was lovely. Our waitress was left with the impression the issues were resolved and didn’t need escalated as your demeanour became pleasant however we know why. ‘The owner's response was to become quite agitated and say ‘do you know what, just get out' and threatened to fetch somebody to throw us (a 70 year old married couple) out of the hotel.’ Let’s add some context! To be told ‘if your business was in England, you’d be closed’ and ‘what do you expect in a country full of backward Neanderthals’ when I tried to explain why dogs were only permitted in the Chart room for dining, was extremely rude, upsetting and quite frankly racially abusive! Then to add insult, after I asked you 3 times if you wanted a copy of your card receipt as you were walking away, your response was to come back and say ‘Yes, I probably should take it in case you try to charge me again’. I have never been so insulted in my life! However, I state categorically, I never threatened to fetch anyone to throw you out as the only other person in with me that morning was my daughter except for the 3 other guests waiting for breakfast who witnessed the whole thing. On a brighter note, the whole unfortunate incident has led to a review of our dog policy in public areas and we will now allow dog residents to accompany their humans to 1 of 2 designated tables in our main restaurant however non resident guests may still be asked to dine in the Chart room should these table be reserved; and we have also changed the table arrangement in the Chart room for a more pleasurable dining experience, although the pool table remains but is not used when guests are dining unless they themselves wish to play.
