My wife and I had a lovely time here. Really well done rooms and comfortable. Hosts were so accommodating and it was great to have the option of self catering. Superb pub just down the road. Houghton Lodge is beautiful. We will definitely stay here again when back in the area. Good value as well

A wonderful stay, in a quaint and beautiful estate just 1.5hrs from London. Very comfortable room, with everything you could need. The host was communicable and made us feel very welcome. Will definitely recommend to friends.

A perfect cottage on a historically beautiful estate that has returned fully to its former glory. There is an excellent pub 1.5 mins away called The Boot where the village congregates for excellent ale/Guinness/wine and food. Fantastic vibe.

I spent a blissfully comfortable 3 nights in one of the Apple Rooms last weekend. I’ve stayed in several of them during the last couple of years and can honestly say they are luxurious in every detail and quiet and self contained. I always seem to sleep so well there and always enjoy a walk down to the alpacas and sheep and then just sitting on a bench watching the crystal clear river drift by. It’s well worth taking polarised glasses so you can spot the trout and it’s always enjoyable watching the fishermen trying to catch them . This is a very magical place and highly recommended.

Thank you so much for your amazing review and we are delighted you had such a great stay in one of our Apple Rooms. We so appreciate hearing that our guests find them as we had planned they should be- smart, self contained, warm, with everything you need to be comfortable when away from home. We are glad you were able to enjoy the river: A large salmon was spotted the other week lying close to the landing stage! We hope you will come back and stay again soon.

We stayed in Cox's Pippin suite, which was clean, spacious and very comfortable. The bathroom was impressive, with plenty of room and a splendid shower, the bed was exceptionally comfortable, and the mini-kitchen had everything we needed. We explored Houghton Lodge Gardens, which were lovely, and took a walk down to the river on which we met the alpacas and the Hebridean sheep! We had a nice meal out in Stockbridge ('The Greyhound on the Test'), and a fascinating visit to the Mountbattens home at nearby Broadlands. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.

My husband and I have just spent a magical three days in the Apple rooms at Houghton Lodge in Hampshire. It is a charming estate on the banks of the beautiful River Test. Our room was immaculate and tastefully decorated and furnished. It has a well-equipped kitchen and there was a lovely picnic basket awaiting our arrival with all kinds of delicious goodies for breakfast the next morning. Croissants, granola, fresh coffee and various teas. The fridge was stocked with fresh milk and orange juice. The Kingsize bed was very comfy and the bathroom had a great walk-in shower and underfloor heating - even a mirror which won't mist up! The estate is lovely to wander around and the gardens are divine - it must take a whole flock of gardeners to keep it looking so beautiful. On our first walk, we came across some Alpacas and sheep in a pretty meadow next to the river. There's a cafe that serves lovely lunches and we enjoyed a yummy old-fashioned tea - small sandwiches, scones and clotted cream and really good homemade cakes. The nearby towns and villages all have good pubs and restaurants and charming shops - so there are lots to choose from on that front. Houghton Lodge itself is a very special and charming house and we were lucky enough to have a tour by the owners Daniel and Sophie. I won't say more about that as you can read about it on the website but certainly worth doing if possible. Our housekeeper Debbie was brilliant and so helpful and made sure our cottage was always spic and span. We had such a great visit and just wish it had been more than three nights as it is such a relaxing place to be. I sat quietly outside our studio cottage and managed to read two books listening to the birdsong. We can't recommend it highly enough and do hope to return one day. The Test Valley must be one of the prettiest places in England to visit.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review and I am very sorry not to have replied before but for some reason we had not activated Trip Advisor (we are new to this!) so we hadn't received, read and let alone replied to it. We are so thrilled you had such a great time discovering this corner of The Test Valley. From reading your review it seems you made the most of your short stay enjoying everything that is best about our Apple Rooms and exploring everything that is on the doorstep in the local area. This winter we have begun to put in a new Oriental Garden, so please do come back another day to enjoy the changes and read two more books....

We stayed in the d’arcy spice room for a week. Everything has been done to make the room extremely comfortable, with a great kitchen and luxurious bathroom. It actually made us feel like we were the first guests to stay as everything was so spotlessly clean and looked brand new which is thanks to Debbie the lovely housekeeper. As soon as we arrived, Debbie introduced herself and welcomed us and gave us some very useful information on the area and made sure we knew we could get in touch with her if there was anything else we needed. We had our little dog staying with us and 2 lovely little bowls and beautifully packaged dog treats had been left in the kitchen for her. We ordered a breakfast hamper for 2, which arrived stacked with pastries, bread, fruit, several different cereals, lovely selection of teas & coffee, jams & honey. There was orange juice, milk, fresh berries & yoghurt in the fridge. Honestly, we had everything we needed and more. The tearoom is delightful, the gardens gorgeous and walking down by the river is glorious. We ordered dinner from McCrimmon & Reid and were advised that we could have this delivered and dine in the walled garden. In fact, a table had been exquisitely laid out for the 2 of us in the conservatory within the walled garden, it looked incredible and truly magical in the candlelight as the evening grew darker. The four course tasting menu from McCrimmon & Reid was completely delicious and presented like a work of art. We had a stroll around the walled garden, which is absolutely gorgeous with so much to see. So happy that we found Houghton Lodge, we’ve had a fantastic break and will most definitely return again soon.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We are so pleased you had such a happy time. It is reassuring to know that everything we have put in place is working satisfactorily, a great deal of thought and research went into making these rooms! We all come from dog friendly families and like to make our four legged friends welcome too! Mcrimmond and Reid are exceptional local caterers and we are so thrilled you were able to enjoy a candle lit dinner in the Conservatory. Please do come back and see us again soon, there will be two dog bowls and some treats waiting.....

We stayed in the Egretmont Russet room, never again! The room is by the barn so is quite dark. The bed is extremely uncomfortable, due to a very soft mattress which slopes to the side. I feared I would fall out during the night. The duvet is incredibly thick and heavy, inappropriate for May, but fine in January. This is a wedding venue so expect to be kept awake until the early hours by wedding guests playing music, talking and laughing outside. Otherwise the room was extremely clean, good storage, well designed and furnished, excellent bathroom and kitchenette facilities, wonderful walled garden and very peaceful once the partying is over.

We had a weekend break in the Apple Rooms and our room was Barnack Beauty, a superb self catering room. The rooms looked incredibly inviting with bright sunlight streaming through the windows and fresh flowers on the table. We unloaded the car before walking to the tea room for a coffee. It was delightful sitting outside in Houghton Lodge's walled garden, enjoy the sun and the silence. As we were guests we didn't need to rush as we had access to the walled garden after opening hours so after coffee we walked through the formal garden and onto the lawns. These have always been my favourite feature of Houghton Lodge on every visit, the lines of the lawn cutting leading the eye towards the sculpted silhouette of the house. The rooms were quiet, warm and clean. The information pack gave some useful ideas for eating, including home delivery for these delightful covid times. Wifi speeds were reasonable, certainly for email and browsing. Parking was just outside the lodge and the location allowed us to visit several NT properties over the weekend and then have breakfast and evening walks around Houghton Lodge gardens and grounds. There were also tables and chairs outside so we spent one evening (until the April weather was too chilly!) sat outside and enjoying the sunset. A fantastic break in lovely accommodation and setting, thoroughly recommended.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review. It makes it all worth while! As a matter of interest we did not furlough any members of staff and kept the whole show on the road last year with few visitors. As you may be a gardener you might be aware that one years seeding leads to seven years weeding and it is difficult to restore a garden once you have 'lost it'. The gardens when my parents came here in 1977 were completely derelict, and it has taken my mother and wife till recently to get them to their present beauty. We actually think they were baby coots that you saw which look surprisingly like a tiny moorhen when they are little, but tend to hatch earlier in the year than our water hens. We have found only one spot where you can get the house reflected in the water-which is just across the bridge from the dragon, across the spring ditch. The main river is too turbulent to make a calm reflection!
