Stayed here a few nights in August and we were incredibly impressed. The rooms were comfortable, had everything you needed (fridge and kettle in rooms), and were cleaned extremely well every day. I'd recommend paying for the Aircon as it is reasonably priced and definitely makes the difference, especially in the summer months. The location is fantastic - as it's at one end of the ixia strip near restaurants, bars and shops. It is on the main road but the noise never bothered us - it is only what you would expect being in such a prime location! We tried the food at the restaurant too which was lovely so no need to go far after a busy day. Rhodes town is also only a short bus/taxi ride and if you ask at reception, George will help you with any of the local info including booking trips etc. Fantastic customer service and hotel. Would highly recommend!

We stopped in the hotel for a week, a last minute booking with TUI.
We were not expecting a lot because of the 2 star rating, but it is exactly as the photos show, modern, clean rooms with a fridge and large tv and not forgetting the tea and coffee making facilities.
Our bathroom was large with a shower hairdryer and complimentary shower gels and shampoo. We had a very large balcony with a small table and two chairs, the road is a little noisy but when close the door at night you can’t really hear it.
I have to say that breakfast was one of the best, cooked to order omelettes, full English breakfast or just toast if that’s what you want.
Perfect place for those who don’t want to spend a fortune on a hotel and great base for exploring Rhodes. There are a couple of beach bars across the road, where you can hire a sun bed for €5 each, have a dip in the sea or pool , beautiful scenery and relaxing vibe, drinks are a little pricey at these places and the beach is pebbles so beach shoes are advised.
Rhodes town is a bus ride €3 each from the stop up the road from the hotel and is well worth a visit, beautiful medieval city. We got a taxi on the way back which was €15 for both of us.
A huge thank you to all the staff at the Hippocampus hotel for making our stay so fantastic!
It has been a great holiday and I’m glad we took a chance on a cheap week in Rhodes at this hotel. Fabulous! We with definitely come back again.

Came here on a last minute trip with my partner and we loved it! Rooms are cleaned every day of the week and to a high standard. Rooms all recently refurbished too!

Recommend paying the little extra for the air conditioning, it's great and defo worth having for the heat if you struggle to sleep when it's warm like me then you can turn on the Aircon and be cooler than you are back home. Only holiday when I haven't had to miss the cold Scottish air! George will help you through everything with the hotel and any questions too, and he's always around for questions. Room also has a decent sized fridge (about half size of the big domestic fridges in the UK) and keep everything nice and cold. Seen a review complaining about mosquitos but there is a separate mosquito door for that, so either the hotel have listened to those complaints and acted on them, or the reviewer was being unfair. Either way, the hotel have worked hard to fix that which should be a sign of how much care they put in. Even in the rooms there were 2 different pillow types, thinner ones and puffier ones. It's a little thing but it's really thoughtful!

The food here is amazingly good. We were here 11 days and never even felt like eating out. I'm pretty fussy for food and still felt confident in trying the stuff I'd never heard of because I knew it was going to be good quality. Highly recommend the feta with honey and black sesame as starter. The Youvetsi and Stifado were me and my girlfriends favourites. There's also a happy hour between 17:00 and 19:00 where you can get over a pint of beer for €3 and cocktails for €6. Also worth letting anyone from UK know that measures in Greece are almost double of the measures UK bars use, so you basically get a double every drink. Makes it even better value than it already is.

The whole family here works pretty much constantly yet are always pleasant to be around, I don't know how they do it! They have been great the whole trip and you're never waiting around for anything. Lovely people, wish them all the best and hope they can have a nice well earned break in the off-season!

Few local tips -

If you have concerns about coming to Hippocampus because there is no pool, don't worry, there is a pool bar pretty much across the road, yet unlike your classic big hotel, you don't have to set an alarm at the crack of dawn to fight for a place. Only once in 11 days did we have to wait for a lounger, and it was fine because there are seats all around in the shade to have a drink. It also has steps leading down to the beach too. Drinks there are also good (and strong!).

Also there is a SPAR along the road too with lots of essential stuff at a good price. It has an ATM outside, but there is one closer to the hotel just across the road. Rates are pretty good incase you don't want to convert a ton of money at once. We just took out as we needed.

The rooms are spotlessly clean (as are the limited common areas) and cleaned 6 days a week and towels and sheets changed at sensible intervals.
The staff are all warm and friendly and try to be helpful.
My main issue is that there was a constant noise, a cross between a drip and a ticking clock, keeping us awake at night for the first 3 nights about which we complained from the moment we got our room and constantly until it was identified on the 4th night. It should have been identified immediately. It was the fan left on continuously in a storeroom under room 210. Not good and spoilt our holiday through lack of sleep.
My only other niggle was that I booked half board having read the reviews on the standard of food. I would recommend room only or B&B as the menu on half board is very limited, mostly burgers and pasta, no fish or lamb except prawn risotto, nor even upgrades to the full menu at a premium.
All in all I would be unlikely to stay here again

Dear David, thank you very much for your comment and review. We always take under serious consideration reviews of good intentions, as your comment only help us do better and improve our services. For the fan that caused the noise there is not much to say other than sorry. We had no previous comments about this all these years, but for sure we shall take it into account. Concerning your comments about the half board quality of menu we want you to be assured that we continuously upgrade and renew our menu. We intend to adopt your observation about the possibility of upgrades to the full menu at a premium and it is something that we are going to do directly. Our basic philosophy is to offer top quality services to our guests and we always get valuable help by your comments. It will be a pleasure to have you back next year.

We had a mixed experience with our stay here at hippocampus hotel, and I'm sharing this in the form of this review.

We arrived at the hotel in the very early hours of the Sunday morning roughly 2/3am. We were greeted by a male who welcomed us and checked us in. It was very hot and humid and we had enquired about air conditioning. They charged us for a full Saturday rate even though we hadnt even set foot in the hotel which I disagreed with. This was 49 Euros, He also tired to charge us 24.50 euros for the local hotel tax, which we knew was to be 50cents a night, so 3.50 in total which i challenged and the situation was quite difficult. He realised he was wrong and then just asked for 49 and 3.50. We asked to pay on card and he demanded cash. We don't carry that much cash and use card as its safer and a better exchange rate, he blamed not knowing how to use the card machine, so we ended up going to bed without paying, as he said we can pay cash the next day. 3 days passed and we say no one in reception on any part of the day. Once we finally met someone, they said the card machine was now working and card was fine. This seemed very odd.

Our 2nd bad experience came from the morning after we arrived, we had put a do not disturb sign on the door, so we could have a lie in due to arriving early. They challenged this and said we were not supposed to do this as they had to clean the room, baring in mind it was only after one sleep and no use to the facilities in the room. In the welcome book, it states to use the DND sign and housekeeping will not disturb.

Our 3rd bad experience was on the final day, In the welcome book, it stated there was a shower room and facilities to change on the last day all guests had access to. we had asked to use this and were told it was booked out. Again we questioned why was it advertised and why we were not made aware of this. They also allow you to store your luggage there all day until you leave, however this gets stuffed behind the counter at the front door where anyone can access. So it is not secure.

We felt every time we had to talk to someone we felt they challenged us or just didn't want to know.

Now apart from the above, the actual hotel review, being advertised on TUI as 2 star, they only advertise themselves as a 1 star, and they used this regular as an excuse to our problems above.

The hotel looks to have had a makeover recently, its clean, tidy, perfect location, has everything you need such as hair dryer and fridge, and balcony with seating. and a mosquito door net which I recommend to always have shut. The mattresses were not comfortable however and could do with upgrading.

For the price we paid, we didn't expect it to be quite as nice, so it was a nice surprise to us. However, we didn't expect to have such hostile welcoming and difficulties. As it is indeed a hotel, it should still have the necessities.

Had we of not had our bad experiences this would of been an easy 4 Star review.

Where do I start, this hotel is amazing I literally couldn’t fault it!! Costas is the nicest person I’ve met he’s always really welcoming and happy to help with anything. He has a lovely son who he brings to work and again is very pleasant. He’s really gone above and beyond to help me with my mosquito bites and provided me with two plug ins which have helped. As for Artemis she is the best cleaning lady I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, every single morning I have been out for some fresh air at different times and when I get back no longer than an hour or two later my room is spotless. As a single mother who usually comes back from work to a messy house it really does cheer me up!! She even neatens up my shoes (I’m a tidy person but she really does go the extra way) she’s the best cleaner I’ve seen. George is lovely as well if you want a day trip he is the person to ask, he always shouts good morning as I walk by the office and again this cheers me up. He’s happy and smiley and willing to help anyway he can. All in all this is the best hotel I’ve stayed in abroad and I’ve stayed in many!! This hotel deserves more stars and I will be recommending it to family and friends and I’ll be staying again!! If
you want a lovely peaceful holiday then this is the place to be, I don’t exaggerate and I will give a hood review where it’s due. Lovely hotel full with lovely staff!! Thank you to all staff who have made my first 5 days a real pleasure!!

Hippocampus is a absolute cracking hotel the staff are super friendly & the receptionist George & Artemis the maid/cleaner are very helpful & their English is very good. It's 5 min walk to the beach with sunloungers & sunshade for those who don't like sitting or sunbathing on pebbles. Their is a all inclusive deal across the road at Avra Beach Resort Hotel where you can pay €35 adult & €20 child (6 to 12yrs) & free for under 6yrs where you can eat & drink all day use their facilities (Pools Beach & entertainment. Its a great deal especially if your not staying there.
It takes 20 minutes by bus to Rodhos Centre €3 adult & €1.50 child only cash no card payments. Airport is 20 mins by bus (same price) as previous.
The food at Hippocampus is amazing & their pizza is sooo fresh we liked the prosciutto & rocket pizza. We have been here for 4 nights now out of our 14 nights & love it. It should be a 3 star not a 2 star. Congratulations on supplying such a great time & keep up the great work. Peter & Amia

We booked a week at the hippocampus as a last minute booking and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We have never been to Rhodes before so were unsure of where to go but pleased we chose the Hippocampus.
Situated on the main road there are plenty of buses and taxis to Rhodes Town which is 20 minutes away and well worth a visit or two.
The beach is just over the road and The Velon pool bar with free sun loungers if you spend over€10 is just 150 metres away behind a shopping centre and is very relaxing. ( pebble beach so would advise beach shoes)

We arrived late after midnight and were welcomed by a lovely older fella ( didn't catch his name but he set the tone for the holiday)
The room is very clean and everything is as advertised.

Costas and the staff are all very welcoming and really do go out of their way to make your stay a comfortable one with nothing too much trouble.

I will do another review for the restaurant but the traditional Greek food is exceptional and with a good sized airy restaurant it is a very relaxing evening with a good choice from the bar.

George who works reception is very friendly and helpful. All excersions can be booked with George which is very convenient as you just tell him where you want to go and George will sort the transfers and the rest. Brilliant service from him and as cheap if not cheaper than elsewhere. Thanks George

All in all a lovely relaxing week away and will definitely stay here again if we're booking for Rhodes.
Thank you to everyone

Very friendly and helpful staff! George on reception was great, especially at booking any trips you may require. The cleaner did a fantastic job with fresh towels and beds made every day……I’ve also got to mention just how comfortable the beds are….amazing! The room was equipped with a fridge and kettle also. The accommodation is in a very good location only 20 minutes from airport and Rhodes town and 5 minutes from the beach! Don’t be put off this accommodation not having a pool as just 5 minutes down the road is Velon pool bar with on the beach location! (see separate review) but it truly is paradise found!!

I did not know what to expect when I came to stay at the hotel, as it was not myself who booked the trip, as it was my partner. The hotel is a lovely, small family run business, just how I like it. It is clear that the owner and staff take pride in the hotel, including the customer service provided. The staff are so attententive and I don't think we have ever had such a warm welcome when we arrived. The manager could not do more for us. He made sure we had taxis arranged for us when we were venturing out for the day. He helped us arrange trips to ensure we got value for our money, he was just generally really helpful. The breakfast was lovely and the wait on staff were brilliant, breakfast came quickly, fresh and warm. The omelets made for us on request where delicious. The rooms are clean, spacious and good quality air con. The most impressive part of the room for us was the electric shutters that cover the balcony windows, provides a lovely dark room which was a bonus as the baby slept longer than usual in the morning! The rooms were cleaned to a high standard and fresh towels provided . I would definitely stay here again next time I visit!
