Today is the penultimate day of our stay at the Hippocampus Hotel in Ixia and what a lovely experience it has been! Wonderful people running the hotel and they are all very friendly and accommodating. Our room has a big balcony, comfy beds and a decent shower. Worth paying a bit extra (EUR7 per day) for the air-conditioning. There is also a small safe at no extra charge. Lovely food and drinks at reasonable prices (you should try the Bloody Mary!) and good coffee, too, which is essential for me. When it comes to running a hotel, Costas, his wife and their son, Kris, are really on top of their game. Also, a big thanks to George, who arranged a great trip for us to the beautiful island of Symi. A fast boat and transfers included made for a really lovely day. Cheers, George! We met some lovely people staying at the hotel - big up to Jo & Craig and John & Aisla, it was a pleasure to meet you! We are already looking forward to returning to the Hippocampus next year. Thanks again to all concerned. Best wishes from Drew and Denia

My partner and I stayed at the Hippocampus at the end of September/beginning of October for 11 nights. It has been very easy to see why this hotel is rated so highly on trip advisor. The staff truly are incredible. George kindly booked us a great excursion for a day trip to Symi which included transfers. We had such a great day. George very kindly arranged for a 'to go' breakfast for us since we were picked up at 8am and before the start of breakfast at the hotel. I was blown away. Kostas and Chris were a pleasure to see every morning for breakfast, and all the rest of the staff also always had smiles on their faces and were ready to do anything to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We liked our room (209) and will genuinely be back... hopefully next year. Oh yes, and the food is as incredibly as all the other comments mention. Many thanks and see you soon Hippocampus!

Just leaving the hippocampus after a two week stay in rooms 209 and 210. Lovely location. Very clean with fabulous food & friendly staff who make you feel more like family than a resident. Hopefully we will be back next year. Very big thank you from Christine, William, Steve and Dawn xx

Very clean hotel, very comfy bed, air conditioning good. Staff really nice. Restaurant is very good. Location is good. Shops around are good for getting some stuff. Breakfast is very basic but ok we never had any issues with anything. Would recommend if you want a hotel with a good location and good food and staff

We arrived in time for dinner after a short transfer from the airport. The restaurant is lovely and we ate there 3 evenings during the week. Traditional Greek cuisine with plenty of vegetables. Rooms are very clean and beds are comfortable. Plenty of hot water in the shower room. Cooked breakfast is good and served with croissants toast butter honey and jam. Coffee or tea and orange juice. Waiter service is very good. We appreciated having a kettle and cups in the room also. Plenty of shops around the area including a large SPAR supermarket. Easy bus transport to Rhodes town. Tickets from the little shop are cheaper than buying on the bus. Air conditioning is extra but so good in the heat. Tourist tax is only 50cents per night per room. All staff are very friendly and fun and the live music on Saturday and Tuesday nights were a lovely surprise. A very relaxed and friendly atmosphere and we thoroughly enjoyed the week.

This hotel definitely exceeded our expectations. For being 2 star we booked it last minute as just wanted a place to sleep basically, with not much hope for anything else. When we arrived late at night, we were greeted and my suitcase even carried upstairs to our room. There was no rush to sort payment for city tax or aircon (7€ a night) and we were told to get a good sleep and deal with it in the morning. The staff were helpful and friendly, calling us a taxi one day & booking a trip to Marmaris for us. The room was everything we needed, had a fridge and a balcony and was relatively modern. It was clean when we arrived and cleaned throughout our trip. My only criticism would be the balcony chairs being incredibly uncomfortable. Breakfast was cooked fresh and was good for a 2 star hotel. The lack of menu left us slightly confused what we could order but after a day or 2 of looking at other peoples plates we got the idea. It always came fast and set us up for the day. We went out for dinner so can’t comment on evening meals. This was my first time staying at a hotel with no pool and I was a bit apprehensive upon arriving and realising how hot it was, but Velon Pool Bar is 2 minutes across the road and was everything we needed (would highly recommend at 5€ a day) so do not let the lack of pool put you off. We didn’t spend a lot of time at the hotel but the time we did spend there was very pleasant, thank you.

Unfortunately we were in the room ground floor which was adjoined to the public toilets. The flush was constantly heard as were the staff voices as we were close to the bar. The room was clean and cleaned every day but the room was small and pokey and very dark. The bed next to the patio door restricted us from opening it. There were so many plants outside anyway that they restricted the light. Breakfast was ok. There was a choice but we didn’t always get what we asked for but it was fresh. Our problem was that we asked for smaller portions all the time and it just didn’t happen. This applied to the evening meals we had there too, so we just went elsewhere to eat in the end as we hated wasting food. Once you reach a certain age your appetite isn’t as big as when you are younger and we couldn’t get the staff to understand this. The staff were all lovely and very helpful having said that, and we arranged 2 trips via reception which were both excellent. I think it’s a good base for exploring but isn’t the type of hotel you would spend the day at because it is on a busy main road. It’s a few minutes walk to the beach where there was a bar with sun beds. We didn’t use them though.

Response from John Palogiannidis, Owner at Hippocampus Hotel
Responded 7 Sept 2023
Dear Avjat, Thank you very much for your review. Many of our guests require a ground floor room deliberately because they enjoy the privacy and the beautiful garden. Our staff is always trying to keep their voice low, especially in the night hours, trying to respect our guests. Concerning breakfast, there is a possibility that you do not find every time what you want, especially at its late hours and when it is crowded. This occurs simply because we are sensitive as well with wasting food. Thus, we are trying our best to waste the least possible food. However, when it comes to the meals (i.e., dinner), when the chef has 15-20 orders in front of him, it is challenging for him to see which dish corresponds to the person ordered. So we are sorry if you did not get the smaller portions that you asked for. We are proud to say that we have never complained about our portions' size. Our guests actually enjoy the fact that we offer ''generous'' portions of quality food. Thank you very much for recognizing our staff's hospitality and help. Our desire is to make our guests feel at home, and we shall do our best for even better services. It was a real pleasure having you at our Hotel. We would be glad to have you back next summer and host you again. Kind Regards, Hippocampus Family.

I did not know what to expect when I came to stay at the hotel, as it was not myself who booked the trip, as it was my partner. The hotel is a lovely, small family run business, just how I like it. It is clear that the owner and staff take pride in the hotel, including the customer service provided. The staff are so attententive and I don't think we have ever had such a warm welcome when we arrived. The manager could not do more for us. He made sure we had taxis arranged for us when we were venturing out for the day. He helped us arrange trips to ensure we got value for our money, he was just generally really helpful. The breakfast was lovely and the wait on staff were brilliant, breakfast came quickly, fresh and warm. The omelets made for us on request where delicious. The rooms are clean, spacious and good quality air con. The most impressive part of the room for us was the electric shutters that cover the balcony windows, provides a lovely dark room which was a bonus as the baby slept longer than usual in the morning! The rooms were cleaned to a high standard and fresh towels provided . I would definitely stay here again next time I visit!

Recently stayed here with my family. I was blown away with the hotel and the service recieved. We arrived late at night (past midnight) and the staff were waiting for us on the road they took gave us a warm welcome and took our cases off us and brought us in. The staff were so lovely, I couldn't fault them. They were fantastic with my baby and were always talking to him or making him laugh. The service for breakfast is second to none and the staff are so efficient and attentative. We were looking for a day trip out somewhere and the manager went through all available options and told us his recommendations. We booked a trip to Turkey with ease and the manager sorted it all out for us and gave us all the information we needed. Anything that we needed, we asked and we got straighaway. The food was amazing and the staff were great. I would definitely book this hotel again and recommend to my friends. Thanks so much for making this such a memorable week for us
