We hired a driver to take us from Florence to Siena where we picked up the rental car and drove to Montalcino. Since it was our first time driving in Europe we were a little nervous about driving from Florence although after driving around the Tuscan towns for a week we did return the car in Florence. I found it very helpful to use the Rick Steves forum on Italy to get answers about the things you should know about driving in Italy. It is a little more complicated than driving in the States.
