Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Absolutely amazing hotel. Staff went above and beyond to cater for us and the breakfast was incredible. Will definitely be back! Suited in a lovely location and the owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. Car park situated just a short distance from the hotel.

Beautiful Hotel, great location, rooms where clean and spacious, bed comfortable, could not fault anything at all. Breakfast superb, dined in the evening and could not fault the food. Tea and coffee facilities also in the room, a lot of places we have stayed has stopped offering this, so it is something we appreciated.

What a gem. We booked a 2 night stay so that we could see the illuminations and we’re so glad we did. This is a charming Grade 2 listed Georgian property with a wonderful historic themed decor. Our room was spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable too, with a really cosy duvet. We had booked evening dinner for the first night and were treated to a lovely 3 courses. Breakfast continued in the same vein. Generous portions, really well cooked. The highest recommendation I can give is that we would look to stay here again when visiting Matlock Bath or the surrounding area.

My partner found the hotel and booked to stay here after booking tickets for the Matlock Illuminations. We arrived later on Friday evening and were greeted and shown to our room. The hotel looks cozy from the outside and is once you step inside. It’s all decorated in a Victorian period way but not in a way that seems tacky or creepy. Our room was absolutely perfect and the bed was so comfortable. We had been provided with an assortment of hot drink choices and beautiful china cups with saucers. In the bathroom we had complimentary soap, shower gel moisturiser and shampoo! I can’t forget the waffled robes, literally every detail had been thought through. The shower pressure was always good and the shower was never cold. We didn’t eat any evening meals here but honestly the breakfast blew my mind. You preorder your meal the night before to avoid food waste - genius! The choice for breakfast was so vast even a fussy vegetarian like myself was pleased! The owners are so generous with portions that both days we went without lunch as we were still full from breakfast!! The real highlight was from Saturday being allowed to go into the roof level garden to watch the illumination fireworks, was so truly magical. We will definitely be back - I literally can’t recommend this place enough.

Arranging a family reunion for 10 people was a challenge. However, Chris, Zoe and the team catered for all our accommodation and dining needs to perfection. Pre-ordering the meals without menu restrictions made dining seamless and most enjoyable. Chris and Zoe are excellent hosts and together with the ambiance of the hotel, excellent breakfasts and dinners our stay was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Many thanks.

Myself and my friend stayed for a couple of nights. The hotel is styled like an old Victorian property, making it much more interesting than a boring hotel chain. We loved the interesting displays and antiques around the communal areas. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable with all amenities you could wish for, including little extra touches such as toiletries, complimentary slippers and dressing gowns The bed and pillows were extremely comfy, I slept so well both nights. The hosts, Zoe and Chris were extremely helpful and welcoming, they answered any questions we had about the local area, recommended places to visit and also printed off some great walks that we enjoyed doing. The hotel is located right in the middle of Matlock bath, and there’s ample parking for guests. The breakfast was delicious, you could tell the ingredients were high quality . Really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend

Have just spent a wonderful weekend at Hodgkinsons Hotel along with other family members to celebrate a 70th birthday. Zoe & Chris are excellent hosts & did everything they possibly could to make our visit so enjoyable. The rooms have everything one could need. The beds were extremely comfortable & I am very fussy on this. Rarely do I find such comfortable beds away from home. There was an excellent choice of foods available on both the breakfast & dinner menus including vegetarian & gluten free options. We will be back again in the future!

Me and my wife arrived here on Friday 21st April for a 2 night stay. It is a lovely oldy worldy hotel, with alot of original features still on show and alot of history behind it which we found really interesting and nice. The couple who run the hotel are very approachable and very helpful. The room we had i.e the Mayfield room was a large room at the front of the hotel with nice views of Matlock Bath. The bed itself was really comfy, and we both had a good night's sleep. The breakfast was really nice as well with just enough on our plate. Would we recommend this hotel yes 100%. Thank you for a lovely stay and hopefully we will be back again one day to visit your lovely hotel. Simon and Christine Finch
