Coral Rock is one of the most popular small to mid-size hotels in Zanzibar. We offer incredible views and an authentic Zanzibari experience that encourages local and cultural interaction within a functioning Swahili fishing village. Our aim is authenticity & value for money. The unrivaled view and location has been home to international fashion shoots by the likes of Sports Illustrated and FHM, as well as almost half a dozen reality TV shows on account of the striking and unusual natural beauty and panoramic vistas that can be enjoyed from every room and facility at the hotel.

Check-in? Smooth as butter. Room? Cleaner than most 5-star hotels I’ve seen so far. Outside terrace? It’s literally Bali combined with Zanzibar. Staff? Friendliest people I’ve probably ever met. Food? The chef should be praised 24/7. This is just a summary of everything that should interest you. We arrived at Coral Rock at around 9am, knowing that check-in is usually at 2pm. We were greeted at the reception by a lady that informed us that the former guests will be leaving and as soon as the room is properly cleaned, we can go in. We left our luggage at the reception and proceeded to relax in the restaurant area while we waited. We had coffees, fruit platters and fresh juices and were entertained by Jerry, a staff member of Coral Rock. We had a very pleasant conversation, he had a wonderful smile and just made time pass easier. After what seemed to only be 5 minutes (but was actually 3 hours), we were informed by Ali (another staff member with whom we completely fell in love) that the room is ready. We proceeded to go to the reception to get the luggage - gasp - which was gone. Instead, the bags were waiting for us in a cool AC’d room, with a big bed full of flowers and fresh water bottles. To die for! This is just our first story with Coral Rock. The following days were amazing as well. Each day we dropped our key off at the reception so housekeeping can occur, which was done very seamlessly. The staff members (especially Ali and Jerry) always made sure to ask us if we need anything and if everything is to our liking. Now, the food… The food! We ate the greatest octopus and calamari ever! We also had a Swahili style seafood coconut curry, which was absolutely (again) to die for. Now, I’ve seen some bad reviews of the tuna tartaki (basically tuna steak), with people saying that it would always be way too dry and cooked extremely well done, which of course is not ideal with this dish; I decided to venture and try it out to see for myself. Needless to say, the reviews were either outdated or simply written by people that have nothing to do whatsoever with food, because it was cooked to perfection. Perfectly medium-rare in the center and crusted with toasted sesame seeds? It was absolutely mesmerizing how perfect that dish was made. I absolutely adored every single part of this experience. Other great dishes include the ramen (all variations of it, as we ate the beef, seafood and chicken ramen), the grilled veggies & calamari salad, the pineapple tart, the curries, and the list could go on and on and on. I was pleased to see the chef and his (cutest toddler ever) daughter, and I would congratulate him all day everyday if I could. We even got to enjoy a stunning floating breakfast all accustomed for by Ali! I can’t describe this place enough. I had high expectations, but Coral Rock exceeded them and then some! Please don’t base your decisions on old, outdated reviews; you might miss out on the greatest experience ever. Note that I’m writing this with a few days left in my stay here. I just couldn’t wait anymore! I’m extremely pleased. Other things that might interest you: - restaurant prices are very affordable (our daily bill for 2 persons, including breakfast, drinks, lunch and dinner did not exceed 80$); - AC present; - good Wi-Fi (although only in common areas, but it’s good to wind down at the end of the day phone-free); - souvenir shop; - SPA treatments & services; - daily cleaning of the pool; - car hire services; - any wish will 100% be accommodated!

I have to complain about their Monday live music events Starts in the afternoon - no problem very pleasant Carries on through to 10pm - ok can cope with that…… but the speaker blast out the music to the whole community!!!! …… then carries on until 4AM IN THE MORNING!!! Really inconsiderate to other people and the community! Either turn the volume right down or finish at 10pm

Service is too long, it took almost a year to serve me. Breakfast is not included in the price. The wifi connexion is terrible. No phone in the room. It was a bad experience unfortunately. Many improvements should be done because the hotel has an amazing natural beauty.

The hotel is beautiful but internet is bad they should work on it and also they should put phone line in the rooms no phone for room service or maintenance or any service at all... A lot can be done to make this hotel great because it has natural beauty already.

Fantastic food at the restaurant!!!!! It’s a cozy hotel, amazing seating options for the restaurant or just to stop by for drinks. Rooms are VERY basic, great if you are just hoping for a spot to sleep as opposed to spending comfortable time in your room. Breakfast was brilliant but be sure to ask prices of different options and coffees to avoid expensive surprises.

This is place with spectacular view to the ocean and fantastic evening parties. We were not guests of hotel, just went there as visitors. During party time (without any Covid-19 restrictions), domestic musicians made spectacle. "Misters from another sisters" and "Brothers from another mothers" played domestic and international hits.

We had dinner at this place for several times. The portions are huge, rather share, but very tasty. Friendly service, the owners are very welcoming and going an extra mile to make all guests happy. Every Monday there is Live Music, which is a great experience.

My husband and I went for dinner and saw tuna on the menu as a salad. We asked Robert if we can have it grilled with some rice and vegetables. He was so accommodating, even brought me into the kitchen to check that the tuna was cooked to my liking. Really delicious meal, generous portions, and the tuna was perfectly seared. Beautiful setting. Will come back again someday.

We booked online and the pics looked beautiful and reviews seemed good. What a mistake! Upon arrival we were met by a massai at a wonky table in a dark 'ally' type reception???? The smell of sewage was overpowering! We were taken to our 'luxury beachfront' room - dilapidated back ally to a room with a broken railing, dirty patio and it was a walk trough to the next room!!! No private patio as described on the website - Not at all what the pictures depict. It is a hell hole - we left and found alternative accomodation. No-one at the property tried to accommodate us, explain or remedy the situation. Although its beachfront they do not clean the seaweed off the beach as is the normal practice in Zanzibar - we have been to Zan numerous times - so you cannot use the beach and the pool is one of the smallest Ive seen at a resort. Don't waste your money - book somewhere else - we ended up staying at the 'spice Island resort" and were very satisfied and happy there.

On arrival we thought we'd made a bad choice because the road up to the hotel had derelict buidings, graffiti on the walls and lots of nothing. We were greeted by a really nice guy on reception plus a massai guy aswell. Our room was good with good sea views. The pool looked good, the restaurant served good breakfast and very nice burgers. The tide goes out for quite a while so you can go down and look in the rock pools before it comes back in later. Be prepared for a seaweed stench though because there is lots of it on the beach below the hotel. On leaving we were allowed to stay in our room for longer so that was great. We enjoyed our stay here, the guys at the hotel were very friendly.
