The hotel has nice gardens, the rooms are very simple. Ours had air conditioning and fan, which made it so hard for me to understand why there was no hot water in the shower. They just told me they don’t offer it. Since it is wooden you can hear everything from the other rooms in your module. Breakfast was fine, we didn’t try the dinner since the area has so many good restaurants to dine out.

Stayed during a G Adventures trip for two nights. Rooms were very hot with no air conditioning. No hot water for showers. Far from the beach along a dirt road that was hard to walk on. Free wifi in the lobby. Breakfast was average.

I stayed here for three nights and really enjoyed my stay. The people are extremely friendly and the garden is amazing. There are so many birds visiting this garden like Toucans and Ara's among others . Also they really think about the environment and take good care of the place and the rooms. Its also very close to the beach, which is nice.
Thankyou for the stay

I have never met a nicer staff in my entire life. Everyone there was so willing to help and make sure my group had a wonderful stay. The hotel itself was beautiful and gave us the opportunity to feel more like a part of the community. I would absolutely stay here again!!

On our recent December 2013 trip to Costa Rica we flew into the International Airport in San Jose, rented our car and headed out for the approximately 3 hour drive to Uvita. As we arrived in Uvita the day was fading and the sun setting. We found the Hotel Canto de Ballenas down the little rock road, passed La Fogata Pizzeria, and entered a small paradise. The hotel is an eco-lodge offering 12 rooms; our room was in building A and had a twin bed, a full bed, plenty of space for our luggage and belongings, a private patio with chair and a bathroom complete with shower. To say if was a bargain is an understatement; what a great value. It was dark by the time we parked, checked in and got to our room. We freshened up and headed out to dinner at La Fogata.

The next morning we were treated to wonderful hot coffee in the Canto dinning area; a wonderful open-air patio nestled among Canto's beautiful gardens. Soon after we found a table and got our coffee a staff member brought each of us a fresh fruit plate. The tasty fruit was followed by a large full breakfast; again very tasty. Breakfast is included in the bargain of a great room rate!

Before we headed to our coffee and breakfast we sat for a few minutes on our covered patio where we were treated to a wonderful choreography of colorful birds, hummingbirds and flowers and the sounds of nature.

After breakfast we used the morning daylight to look over the hotel property; they have a pool! I did not know this. The pool is fantastic; artfully tiled in varying blues, paired with pool side furniture, flowers, trees and birds. The pool offers bathrooms, showers and all you need to enjoy a day of peace in the sun. There is even a whirlpool and a kiddie pool.

Most hotel guests seemed not to have a car and walked everywhere they needed to go. We did have a rental car and found the hotel location to be right where you want to be. We were close to the national park, to restaurants, shopping and great people!

Definitely check this place out if you plan to visit the Uvita area.

The Expedia write-up for this place is a little misleading as it doesn't mention that the hotel has cold water only, which I think is very important in helping people to make an informed decision on where to stay. 'free toiletries' is also stretching it for the bar of soap you get by the sink!
The location is pretty good with the national park an easy walking distance, the restaurant was nice and very useful to have one on site when we didn't want to venture out during rainy season. The staff are all friendly and helpful. One lady speaks perfect English, but a little Spanish is helpful for communicating with everybody else. The gardens are lovely (would benefit from a bird table to make a bit of a feature of the amount of wildlife they get) and the pool was good and deep (but with children's pool).
The reason for my rating is firstly the price point, which I feel is pretty high for a cold water only basic hotel, and the rooms. The rooms are pretty rustic with gaps in the slats which let in quite a lot of bugs. They're reasonably clean on a day to day basis but there are a lot of cobwebs in the ceiling slats and up behind the curtains. The electrics are a bit sparky and the toilet flush was fairly ineffective.

This is a beautiful place to go. Centric but not into the crowd. The entrance is full of high trees, and the local people working there are very nice, very kind, food is Good, and a swimming pool bigger enough to swim a little bit. Not that small. I recommend this place, is one of the best places I have found to stay in the area! I like it!

I visited with my wife. There were good and bad things. The staff was very good, polite and helpful. The food was delicious and the location is perfect. A few of the bad things were that the bed was way too noise, even the slightest movement would make it sound, no WiFi in the room and no hot water( not needed, tho. The weather is pretty warm) over all I
enjoyed my time there... I would go back...

We didn't even use the room that we'd paid for. The "hotel" was just a series of beaten down old cabins. I've went on camping trips with far better accommodations. No hot water is the least of the problems that this place has. One stiff wind would take down half of the buildings. I'd have felt better about sleeping in an actual tent.

Bonus weirdness? An old solar panel left in the middle of the garden space, right outside of the front desk/restaurant area. It isn't connected to anything, just an old piece of garbage on display for some reason. It's like something from an episode of Hoarders.
