Cristal Ballena was the best hotel during our trip around Costa Rica. It’s simply beautiful, situated on a small hill near the sea. Around the property there is a private rainforest. You can see birds and other animals from your balcony. The restaurant and pool area are really great. The quality of food is superb. During our stay in January there were absolutely no mosquitoes on the hotel property.

Close to the hotel there is Ballena beach. It’s possible to swim there but you should ask at the reception before. The beach is part of a national park; you have to pay 6 USD per person. It’s not overcrowded and everything is keep clean. There is also a free parking included in the price. You can drive there in 5min from the hotel with your own car or there is also a free hotel shuttle.

I contacted the hotel per e-mail before my arrival to ask for a day tour to Corcovado National park. Yolanda from the reception was so kind to organize everything perfectly for me.

Over all our stay was very good. The rooms are average and the grounds are well kept but not much upgrades have been made to the property in general. There is a nice pool and the grounds are beautiful probably one of the more biodiverse properties we have seen throughout the pacific coast of Costa Rica. The restaurant was good and the drinks were great. Thankfully for that being we were there during hurricane Eta and there wasn’t really much more to do with all the rain. We really enjoyed most of our meals but what made our experience great was Helbert, what a personable guy. He had so much patience for my children one who was indecisive every meal and drink order. He made my girls some great mocktails and the best mojitos. Damian was also a pleasure to work with and accommodated any request that I had for him. The room rate is a bit elevated comparatively to other hotels we have stayed at in CR and It is certainly remote so it’s a good idea to have a rental car if staying here or you will need to get a taxi to go into town. Overall I am very happy to have chosen this hotel and lucked out having Helbert on for the days we were there as he was great company. It is locals like Helbert which make me truly love this country and it’s people. I wish the best for this establishment and all of its employees during this challenging time, Pura Vida.

We had a great room. It was very spacous with a comfortable 4 poster bed and both elevated and on the end of a row so there was no disturbance by other guests. The a/c worked well, no mosquitoes and we had wonderful views of the sunset both nights from the wide verandah.
The restaurant was of a high standard and the staff were excellent - friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Although it is quite a steep site there are plenty of areas to walk and we had great close-up views of a group of toucans one morning.
The only thing I found disappointing was that the huge pool was too warm to be refreshing -not sure if that is from solar radiation or just the thermostat set too high.

We enjoyed our stay over New Year's Eve, complete with a band and some lovely fireworks. This is a good place for a family. We found the grounds and trails behind the hotel to be fantastic for birding. The pool is lovely, with amazing sunset views. The hotel arranged for us to take the full day snorkel tour via Sierpe from here, everything was set for us without any problem. We stayed in rooms 5 and 6, they are immediately outside the reception area, not next to the pool. Lovely view of trees towards ocean from these rooms. While the walls of this hotel seem quite thin, I was surprised that we were not bothered at all by hallway noises. However, we were up early each morning on our own.
The restaurant and bar staff are superb, the drinks are tasty, and the food was excellent. I did take off one star as the rooms are indeed dated, and feel a bit like a south Florida motel, with linoleum floors and dated plumbing, and I think it is possible that room 6 might have a bug problem as I saw some spots on the sheets when I got up on the second morning. It is hard to say in this country, as there are SO many insects everywhere. I did tell the staff as I did not notice until we were checking out. If you are a person who spends a lot of time in your room, this might not be a place for you, but if you like easy access hiking, birding, and to go on adventures or lounge by the pool and eat and drink well, then you will be most happy here.

This hotel was our last destination on our CR Journey. Nearly every room (At least upper floor) seems to have a view to the sea. If you're choosing the rooms west-ward you even have the best sunsets right from your balcony. The entire hotel ground was well kept and they have the biggest swimming pool I saw so long in CR.
We really liked the friendly hotel staff - especially Damian, which helped us with every request we had. The owners of the hotel are from Austria and living on the hotel grounds, they try to make your stay unforgettable and asked us about our wellbeing frequently, which we really appreciated.

The provided food was on a high quality. Even the Wiener Schnitzel was really delicious (I could not resist to try it).

The hotel is based a little bit outside of Uvita itself. A car is a good idea to enjoy the environment.

This is a very belated review. Our family are frequent world traveler and took a 2-week trip to Costa Rica to see birds and wild life at the end of 2019. Cristal Ballena was booked for us by our birding travel agency. We stayed there for 3 days. It is located on a forested hill overlooking the ocean. The view from the hotel was fantastic. It is not right on the beach, but the hotel provided shuttles to a nearby local beach ( 5-8 minutes away), which was not crowded at all. (We never want to stay at all-inclusive resorts and prefer to get to know the locals and their culture.) The room was spacious for our family of 4 (our boys were 5 and 8 then). The patio area was large. We enjoyed sitting there, sipping our coffee and watching toucans, and other birds flying by with our binoculars in the moring. The services were excellent. The staff members were super nice and accommodating. On it property, there is a rainforest trail in the hill, which we hiked with our boys and enjoyed it. There is also a beautifully decorated meditation and yoga room up in the hill. Special thanks to Mrs. Angelica Steiner from the owner family. We were able to extend our stay with her help. Angelica was a gracious host and has a great taste in local arts.

We are so happy your stay at Cristal Ballena was such a success and we appreciate your review. It is great to know that the property was accommodating for you, the adults, and your adventurous boys too. What a fantastic combination; enjoying a Costa Rican coffee while watching some toucans. Very Costa Rican to say the least. I will let Angelica know about your review. Is it time for a trip back to Costa Rica? We hope to see you and the boys again soon.

We had a trip planned to Europe that we had to cancel because of the issues with Covid and renewed restrictions. So we had to find an alternative really quick and we opted for Costa Rica. This boutique hotel and spa was reasonably priced because end of July Its winter here and the rainy season. It is nestled inside a rain forest so you wake up to howler monkeys in the morning. Every room has a massive balcony with stunning views of the ocean and you’re surrounded by beautiful birds like macaws and toucans which normally you’d only see in a zoo. The room itself is massive and it has all the bells and whistles. The wow factor of this hotel is off the charts !!!

We booked a 4-night stay but left after the first night.
Let’s start with the positives: the staff is really nice and friendly. They really care about their guests. The swimming pool is big. But that’s about it.
The hotel needs a MAJOR renovation. Everywhere. From the rooms to the “lobby”. From the stairs to the restaurant. It is so outdated. In our room the plumbing was probably from the mid-80s and was never updated. It took us a while (and a call to the reception) to be able to take a shower. The toilets are very (very) low and you have the feeling you can’t stand up when you finally sit on them.
Besides, our room smelt like if it was never used in 2 years (which is possible with the pandemic). But in a 4 starts hotel you expect them to prepare your room. There was a cadaver of a lézard in the bathroom close to the toilets. It had been there for a while! And the air conditioning stopped working in the middle of the night. The “remote” control had a maintenance code on it. There were dead bugs in the curtains when we closed them at night. And the mattresses were very bad. We could feel the springs in our back and our daughters woke up with pain for the first time in 2 weeks in Costa Rica. Last, the common area needs a big cleaning as well. As shown in the attached pictures a high pressure wash would help…
We wanted to speak to the owners who live on site but we were told they were in Austria.
The staff was kind enough to accept to reimburse us for our 3 remaining nights. We felt sorry for them as they were very kind. But this is not a 4 stars property and the owners must do something. We can’t recommend this place.

We are sorry that your experience at Cristal Ballena did not exceed your expectations. We always appreciate constructive criticism to improve the hotel. As you said, COVID has had a big impact on tourism and our beautiful hotel is no exempt. Fortunately, business is bouncing back as has our service levels and our guests are happily returning. We hope you come back again at some time.

The whole site has a luxurious feel. The room was large with a huge bed and mosquito netting. The swimming pool was large, very warm and welcoming. Views of the sea with spectacular sunsets while sipping a (very expensive) cocktail eased away any stress. Food was good but pricey.

It was good to find somewhere with good air-conditioning in this hotter part of the country. Everything was very comfortable- beds, shower, even hair dryer and plenty of space in the bathroom to put your stuff. Nice looking, sizeable pool though unfortunately we had no time to try it out. On the way to the restaurant there were 2 house cats who always made sure they were occupying the best seats- just like at home!
