The Cliffden Hotel boasts a location that has received considerable praise for its proximity to the beach, town, and scenic gardens. While the hotel's atmosphere draws mixed reactions, with a quaint, nostalgic charm for some and a need for modernization for others, the service is generally regarded with affection, the staff's friendliness and helpfulness standing out.
Amenities, especially the gardens and swimming pool, are a highlight, though opinions on value and room quality vary. Cleanliness is typically rated well, but some guests suggest there's room for improvement.

Detailed Reviews
My partner and I stayed here for three nights over Christmas. We chose this Hotel, as we know it is very dog friendly, and our dog was allowed everywhere with us, which was perfect.
The gorgeous grounds lead down to the sea front, and are great for dogs (on leads) to explore. There are plenty of bins and a great little enclosed run for off lead exercise, with a little shelter for humans. Dogs are welcome in the restaurant and there is more than adequate space between and under tables to accommodate them. All the dogs that we met whilst we were there were all exceptionally well behaved, and it was a pleasure to see so many dogs and owners enjoying the festivities!
The buffet style food was really very good. There were always plenty of well laid out dishes to chose from, both hot and cold, and if anything runs out it is quickly replenished. Breakfast is a full English with scrambled eggs - fried or poached can be requested too. The sausages are some of the nicest I have ever had! I didn't try the tempting array of pastries or fruits, but my partner did, and really enjoyed them. There is something for everyone at the evening meals, including a huge array of sandwiches and salads as well as two or three hot options. The veggie curry was delicious and we both went back for seconds!
Rooms are over three floors, I requested a ground floor room when I booked and it was ideal for outside access with the dog. The room was huge, clean, and beautifully warm and inviting, and had everything we needed for our stay. We had a good sized en-suite with a shower over the bath and complimentary 'Dove' shower gel and hand wash. The towels are clean and soft, and the hot water plentiful. There is a housekeeping service if you require it, but we chose not to and made our own bed.
The Hotel has a small bar on the ground floor and a very nice lounge, again both dog friendly. There was some musical entertainment on 2 of the nights, and a quiz on the third. There is a heated indoor pool adjacent to the hotel and pool towels are available from reception.
All of the staff were exceptional, and really went out of their way to do as much as they could to make this a Christmas to remember, and we are already planning a return trip with our dog. If you want a relaxing break with your four legged friend at any time of the year, then a stay at The Cliffden Hotel will not disappoint!!!!

My wife and I know the area well but had not stayed at this hotel before.
We were more than pleasantly surprised from the location and entrance drive, to the good parking, very quick Reception and check-in and then our room - a Club room with a small balcony and lovely views of the lake and grounds.
Good bar and dining room. Breakfast is buffet style, but good to see that table service was available for anyone with mobility issues. Lovely local bacon and poached eggs. Lunch one day was also good.
All in all a restful break ..... Thank you to all staff.
We will be back !!

We have stayed at The Cliffden on several occasions and have enjoyed our stay. However although the hotel seem to be doing some refurbishments of late, including the amazing new swimming pool, I cannot say all are for the better. Firstly, intial impressions of the room are that they are clean but after a couple of days I noticed that there was an odour as I laid down to sleep. A sort of greasy hair smell. When I investigated where it was coming from I found that the wall behind the headboards was covered in dust and I also found that the carpet behind the headboards up against the skirting board, had a very thick layer of dust that obviously had been vacuumed in a long time. We are used to the bathroom being in need of a refurb and in the past have accepted that the hotel is old. But the window has no curtain and was also covered in dust and had the odd cobweb, again the cleanliness had been overlooked. I do know that they are limited on staff but if the cleanliness of each room could be addressed it would make all the difference. The rooms themselves are very comfortable with good comfortable mattresses and good bedding too. The way breakfast is served has also changed and definitely not for the better. It used to be kept warm in individual lidded and heated containers but has now been swapped for an open hot plate which dehydrates the food, particularly the bacon. It would also be good idea to have someone checking when food is running low and needs to be replenished. For 3 of the days we were there, we just didn't bother with the breakfast as it was either cremated or hadn't been replenished. Such a shame, as we know what it has been and what it could be. We absolutely love this hotel and the position of it is just perfect. The gardens are beautiful and the new addition of the little waterfall is delightful. It would be wrong of us not to recommend this hotel as it's lovely but it does need a bit of a shake up!!

Hospitality has been hit hard by Brexit and Covid, and it shows.
Set in 7 acres of gardens, which are a joy to walk around, but such a shame that so many of the plants are in need of attention.
We arrived by train, and it was not far to walk to the hotel.
Our room was pleasant and comfortable, but lacking in some of the basics. We never did work out how to operate the shower (room 3) to get a comfortable temperature. The “Complimentary Toiletries” consisted of two small bottles of moisturiser. When we went to reception to ask for shower gel and shampoo, they had none and strangely mentioned that another guest had asked for them the day before. It never did arrive.
The swimming pool has some technical problem so was not usable and I could see no signs of it being fixed.
The location is excellent for getting to the beach and town centre, though the return trip is fairly steep.
If you like dogs, then this is the place for you, but otherwise it seemed strange having them around in the dining room.
One saving grace was the food. The menu selection, which is online, had an excellent choice of dishes and the cook needs commending for the quality and size (manageable) of the dishes – we looked forward each day to the evening meal.
There appeared to be a couple who ran the hotel and multi-tasking was the order of the day. If you could not get attention at reception, they were probably vacuuming a room somewhere or serving at the bar. At meal times, the poor waiter did his best for everyone, but badly needed help.
This was not a cheap hotel. Overall we enjoyed our stay, but I suspect because of the effects of covid the owners are reluctant to spend in a few key areas which would make this a fabulous hotel.

Hotel is a great location with access to the beach. We asked for an early check in but on arrival we were told that they forgot to tell the cleaners & to come back at 4pm. When in our room there were empty beer bottles left in the wardrobe. The bathroom had mould & cobwebs in it & the ceiling fan was full of dust so that had not been cleaned for months.
The breakfast service was also not great with having to wait ages for tables as only 1 member of staff there to clear tables that had just been used. Pool is really good for an early morning swim though.

My sister and I stayed at the Cliffden Hotel for a couple of nights visiting our Nan recently.
As we arrived we felt the welcome was quite robotic, a tick box exercise going through the check in process however still friendly.
Our room was a really good size, generally quite clean although we did find a couple of hairs on the pillow and in shower which weren’t ours. The beds were comfortable and quite a powerful shower in the bathroom. It would have been nice to have some shower gel rather than just shampoo/conditioner and also biscuits with the tea/coffee.
The hotel itself is quite large, rather dated and would benefit from some updating however offered a homely feel to those maybe of an older generation. It was nice taking my dog for a walk on the grounds which offered 7 acres of land and you could get up to the park or down to the seafront at the back gate. It was also local to the town centre.
At breakfast it was self service, it would have been helpful for an indication of where the milk was located.
During breakfast and dinner time we found it hard to find a clean glass and cutlery was not very clean. When we brought our Nan to the hotel for dinner we found certain staff quite rude. Also the pasta dish was very basic, dry, lacking presentation and no side salad. The food was very basic and we felt it needed more attention to detail for what you would pay. On a couple of occasions we over heard others food orders were not correct.
Upon leaving I was told there was a charge for the dog. I was not told this at the time of booking, also I had notified the hotel beforehand I was bringing the dog. When I book on booking.com with other hotels they will notify me there is a charge. I was also not told this when we arrived. I reluctantly paid this.
Myself and my sister have worked in hospitality over the years and feel we have a good understanding to a degree of customer service and expectations. We feel this hotel needs more life given to it, to consider all age ranges. To offer better customer service, more welcoming where staff feel more enthusiastic about where they work and listen to the customers

My room was spacious and comfortable with TV, tea and coffee, WiFi and plenty of storage. The bathroom was large with an over bath shower and complimentary soap, shampoo and conditioner. The serve yourself breakfast was more than adequate and the restaurant had full length windows overlooking the terrace and gardens. There is a gate at the end of the gardens leading to the seafront and it is an easy walk into town. There was parking on site, which is a luxury some other hotels did not have. This is an old hotel so some aspects of it are dated (eg the windows) and my room looked out on a white wall, but other rooms have a better outlook - maybe worth checking when you book if you're going to be spending any length of time in your room. I was a little disappointed with the dinner menu because I'm not a fan of spicy food or barbecue sauce and that drastically reduced my choice, but I ate with family most of the time so this was not too much of an inconvenience and when I did eat in the service was good.

If you are hoping for a relaxing break then this hotel is an excellent choice. Set in acres of lush green gardens surrounded by mature trees. Sitting on the extensive outside terrace area with sea views you feel immediately rested.
The short walk through the gardens to the sea front and nearby train station, a little steep on return is doable and means you can easily explore the local area without having to drive. We enjoyed a fabulous steam train / boat trip leaving from Teignmouth station.
Our standard double room exceeded our expectations, clean and so much larger than a standard room in a more modern built hotel.
Staying on a dinner bed and breakfast basis for 4 nights we ate our evening meals from the daily set menu. As other reviews have mentioned the choice on this menu is somewhat limited however for the cost of £15 (for guests staying at the hotel) for a three course meal I consider it to be excellent value. We found the breakfasts to be more than adequate with a good selection of hot and cold fare.
The dining room is large and airy with plenty of tables situated by the terraced windows offering a lovely view. This hotel specifically encourages visually impaired guests, it was lovely to see how attentive the staff were to meeting their needs / assisting especially during meal times. Having so many dogs (working and non working) welcome at the hotel also added to the friendly ambience.
If you are looking for instant, click of a button top notch service you will be disappointed but if you are seeking an unhurried, peaceful environment in an excellent location then I would definitely recommend a stay here.

Firstly I need to say this hotel is a 3 star hotel and so needs to be judged on that basis. It does not pretend to be anything else.
Great location with sea views and extensive gardens plus just a very short walk to the beach, town centre and railway station. A lovely site and building with wood panels and a fab staircase.
Our room (007) on the ground floor had been freshly painted and was surprisingly spacious.
Lots of storage with sufficient hangers, tea & coffee making facilities, flat screen television and a telephone.
It was cleaned to an acceptable standard.
The bathroom had a shower on a flexible hose over a bath.
The sink unit looked a bit like something from a cross channel ferry or cheaper cruise ship but the guest cosmetics were rather nice as were the towels.
No complaints from me.
Overall the buffet breakfast was ok with all the usual items, fried or poached eggs were to order.
The chilled orange juice wasn’t bad.
However the bacon was really excellent.
We had a table by the windows with a lovely view of the sea.
Breakfast staff were friendly, efficient and helpful.
Only downsides were that wifi is only currently available in the public rooms but would cover the bedrooms too very soon I was told.
There is a fabulous looking indoor swimming pool complex which has unfortunately been closed for some time. 😢
Good points:
Location, free onsite parking, lovely staff and best of all lots of rabbits 🐇 in the garden.
All very relaxing.
We would certainly stay here again.
Top tip: Watch out for the speed camera a few meters down the hill from the hotel entrance as you could easily accidentally go a bit faster than intended.

There are so many things wrong with this hotel that it is difficult to know where to start. I'll start with the good points. A lovely location set in large gardens close to Teignmouth town and beaches. The first thing you notice when you arrive is that there are not enough parking places. Don't even think about trying to access the lower parking area unless you have a mini as you wont get into the parking spaces and you cant turn around! The next thing you notice after checking in is that the only lift is barely large enough for 2 people with luggage. if you room is on the second floor you will be hit by the heat as you open the door. These rooms are in the roof space and get very hot even on cool days. They desperately ned air conditioning but all you get is a fan. Our room was 27 degrees at night - not good for sleeping. On our first night we noticed a puddle on the bathroom floor. We reported this to reception but nothing was done the next day the puddle got worse and we could see that the problem was the toilet which leaked all over the floor when flushed. it took the hotel 2 days and a lot of wet towels to fix this. Breakfast in the restaurant depends on 2 machines, the hot drink machine which was not only very slow but also unreliable. On the first morning we couldn't get a cup of tea and when we asked for a kettle in the kitchen they couldn't find one that worked, we had to walk into town to get a cup of tea. The toaster did work but threw the toast out the back of the machine so you you had to toast your arm to get it. The bar was poor and expensive, They were getting complaints about one of the lagers so we avoided that but there were no ales on draught. The security gate at the end of the garden was a joke. They gave us a security code to enter it but you didn't need one, you just put your hand through the gate and operated the handle from the inside! With all these problems you might have expected to see someone from management for an apology but none were in sight.

Newcastle-under-Lyme, United Kingdom510 contributions57 helpful votesDo club rooms offer a king size bed and if not could we have two single beds zipped together
Yes there is a charge unless it is a guide dog. It does cater very well for dogs, with a grooming room, night spending area & even towels in the entrance to dry your dog off in wet weather, though I don't know if that still applys with Covid. We have visited The Cliffden at least once a year, previously with my son's guide dog & always enjoy our stay there.
I do know that the hotel is closed at the moment, but you can e.mail them and they reply quite quickly. Also, they have told me, that, they are not taking any bookings at all, until they re-open, even for later in the year. You need to contact them direct, to get a refund for a previous booking.
