Great place for the value of the hotel, we went on a Virgin voucher and paid an extra £75 for a 2 night stay with bed and breakfast in a standard double, the extra was because we only had a voucher to do glamping or a tea party ect.
Breakfast was nice, a choice of full English or continental, the first morning we had the full English but was okay, egg a bit snotty and bacon even though asked for well done wasn’t but like I say was okay for the money paid, the next morning we had the continental and that was brilliant value, my wife had scrambled eggs on toast.
The room was big on size but just lacked a few nice things like, a full length mirror, a mirror by the dressing table for when getting ready (a girl thing apparently) and maybe a fridge would be nice but like I say for the money I was impressed, the bed was really comfy. The staff was also a credit to the hotel, really couldn’t help us enough, we didn’t have a fan in the room and it was quite warm so mentioned it to the manager and she immediately went and bought us a Jew one and put it in our room and turned it on all whilst we was eating our tea. The only one disappointment was the Sunday roast, it really wasn’t that great but we would definitely recommend the stay for the value and the staff and would definitely stay again

Small, but comfortable, room in coach-house (I had asked for ground floor and that was what I got). Cold and radiator was useless.
Stayed 2 nights but bed not made for 2nd night. Used towels were not changed - just left draped over the sink where I had left them after use. Someone had been into the room to empty the bins and replace biscuits, but that was about it for the room service.
Had meal in restaurant part of pub on first night. As before, I had eaten there in Jan' 2020 and enjoyed the food very much. Not good when I had it this time. Salad limp and I think that everything else offered to me had been re-heated. They did give me a 20% discount on the main course and a complimentary cup of coffee. However, I would much have preferred the meal itself to have been better in the first place. The room was devoid of other customers and now I know why. I did not eat there on my 2nd night.

Room Tip: Ground floor room in the coach-house was great, but there was much creaking from the room above.

Check-in at the bar was a breeze and my first impression of the room was good, we booked a superior room. A large room overlooking the road at the front, road noise was not a problem. People smoking outside the front of the pub was a bit annoying as opening the window allowed the strong smell of smoke to enter the room. The room was very warm so I turned the radiator down. The bathroom was clean and bright except the towel rail didn't heat up and a pipe joint was wet and corroded, I suspect that the radiator was full of air and needed maintenance and the sink had a hairline crack. There was a glass holder with no glass, the shower was strong and had copious hot water.
We ate in the restaurant my food was ok my wife's hunters chicken was dry and hard.
The problem with the room was the creaking floorboards in our room and the room above were quite annoying, especially during the night when my wife got up during the night the creaking boards woke me up and later when I needed the bathroom I woke her up (beer & age). Oh and take slippers because of the old oak floorboards.
Breakfast was the normal hotel fare nothing special, and the coffee provided in a pump flask was only warm.
Would I stay here again? Maybe.

Needed to book a room on a Friday afternoon for the following evening in the area, most hotels were already booked, not the Chequers Inn, £70 for a double room, as I said I wasn’t expecting much.
Only what a surprise, located in a quiet village just off the A22, the hotel is a grade 2 listed building just opposite an old church. Booking in was very welcoming and efficient including a review of the Covid restrictions, masks supplied as well.
The room was cosy with the usual TV, tea/coffee making facilities and hair dryer, only down side was the bathroom was a bit on the small size. Hotel has a very nice beer garden so as it was one of the hottest days of the year we sampled a couple of drinks before a walk round the village.
Evening meal was delightful, wife is a coeliac and still had a good choice, not limited to the usual chocolate brownies for desert, even had gluten free cheesecake on the menu, hotel/restaurant is part of the Greenking group so you can view the menu on their app, which is also an easy way to order drinks and food.
As I said the hotel/restaurant was such a delight that we intend to return for a longer period in the near future, we had a good chat with one of the managers, Ben, about the hotel who was very helpful in answering a few of our queries.

The hotel was good for the price. Location is quiet, and makes a good base for a few nights to explore Ashdown Forest and Lewes. However you do need a car.

The hotel itself is historic and very oldy worldly, there is a well in the restaurant for example.

The restaurant and bar are homely, and serve a good choice of drinks, and a wide range of food choices all of which are fairly reasonable priced.

The meals on average were good, breakfast was nice with a good amount of portions.

We ate twice over both nights of our stay, the food on the first night was very good and cooked well, however on the second night lacked seasoning and battered food was burnt. Possibly a different chef.

There is a nice little bar garden which is a sun trap in the summer.

The beds were very comfortable with good facilities, windows only open a short way for safety, which is fine but there were some locks missing on several of ours which meant it was a bit unstable to keep it open, additionally our curtain blind holder on one side was broken. These however didn’t upset our stay and are being brought up for awareness. The rooms do get quite warm but fans were provided which suited us.

The staff were fantastic and friendly, a really nice group of people who went out of their way to accommodate in a very courteous and professional manner. The General Manager (Rumy) was very hospitable, she led by example and was very good at hosting. Her team are an example of her leadership. Thanks guys.

Overall a very good stay which made a good memory for our family.

Would recommend based on price, comfort, variety of menu and service.

Booked for dinner last night. Wine was sent in a cooler already open and put on the table with glasses, room temp for Rose?
Had to ask twice for menu, once choice not available. Ham and Lee pie very stodgy pastry and veg boiled to death
Bill just put in front of me with the card machine, then waitress left. Typical chain company food.
We won't be back

I booked to stay in this hotel as was working 5 minutes down the road. On first glances it seemed nice, lovely spot and friendly staff.

My room was basic and I felt very tired, had to ask if they had removed the coat hangers due to Covid. There were miss matching furniture and rusty fittings in the bathroom.

I booked a table for dinner and used their app to order. I ordered a starter and main course. After waiting half an hour starter and main course turned up together. I tried to order a drink through the app but that kept timing out.

Went to the bar to order a drink and the waitress told me that someone would come and serve me. After waiting 20 minutes I had to grab one of the passing waiters and ask again for a drink.

Over an hour after placing my order whilst sitting outside I am now getting chilly and waiting for my main. I was going to order desert but don’t really want to wait another half an hour or try the app again!

Shame really as I had pre booked two more nights accommodation in a weeks time when I am back down this way working. I have cancelled the booking so am now going to travel half hour from where I’m working rather than the 5 minutes it took to the Chequers Inn.

The saving grace of this place is that the staff are pleasant however this is not somewhere I could recommend unless you want cheap no frills pub. You get what you pay for!

Finally the ‘Signature Classic’ Sea Bass and Scallop Risotto has arrived and all that I can say is thank goodness for the “Eat our help out” deal has saved me 50% on my bill.

The moral of this story is if you stay somewhere like this stick to a burger or basic pub fare and you then won’t be disappointed, maybe

This hotel is in such a great location and is a beautiful building. So much potential. But goodness, what a disappointment. Where do we start? Dirty rooms: the carpet in the Wellington suite hadn’t been vacuumed either before we arrived or during our 2-night stay. It had stains all over plus debris including hair from previous guests and the furniture was really tired. We ate at the restaurant on the first night and one of our party thought her fish tasted strange and left most of it, mentioning this to staff. No response as they were basically clueless. She later vomited so had to be moved to another bedroom that could best be described as a shoebox, with knobs that fell off the shower and where you had to crouch to use the facilities due to the low ceilings. Then a complete lack of communication meant their new room wasn’t cleaned the next day. Breakfast service was patchy at best: whatever you ordered was delivered incorrectly and basic things such as asking if you want condiments or indeed anything else was lacking. So many staff on hand, most apparently unable to deliver.

I’d like to assure you that we take so many safe guards with our food to prevent any risks happening. This is a gem of a hotel in a village now by passed by the A22.

The Friendly staff are a refreshing change to some of the jobs worth’s you tend to find lurking in other similar establishments.

Assistant Manager Ben will make sure that your visit exceeds your expectations whilst Meg will make sure that your drinks and meals appear promptly. Jay will work wonders in the kitchen.

And for insomniacs, like me, you have the full range of Freesat TV channels not the more usual 20 or so TV channels which miraculously turn into TELESHOPPING Channels after midnight

A credit to Greene King.
