The Wheatsheaf is a traditional, family run inn set in the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Walker and dog friendly, the Wheatsheaf is on a spectacular walking route between the historic Bolton Castle (where Mary Queen of Scots was kept captive in 1568)and the world famous Aysgarth Falls. The Wheatsheaf was also where Alf White (more famously known as the vet and author James Herriot) and his wife had their honeymoon in 1941. Featuring real ales, log fires, and good food, the Wheatsheaf prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere.

Just returned from a lovely New Year break (three nights) at The Wheatsheaf, our second visit this year.
There are obvious highlights on a visit to this friendly bolt hole, it’s in a lovely sleepy village in the heart of beautiful Wensleydale surrounded by wonderful walking trails and attractions including the easily reached Aysgarth Falls and nearby towns of Hawes and Leyburn.
But it’s not just location that makes this welcoming B&B stand out. Unassuming on arrival, it’s a typical old fashioned Yorkshire countryside pub in the best of ways, the ladies who run it are down to earth, as warmly welcoming as the hearth fires in both bar and lounge and energetically keen to ensure you have a nice stay.
The room we’ve stayed in is compact but clean, nicely decorated and good value whilst the meals we’ve enjoyed have been similarly homely and enjoyable. The usual pub menu staples done well with plenty of choice and the range of desserts with custard a firm favourite with us.
The New Year period was very very busy for them as they were full with residents, visiting diners and locals who clearly enjoy coming in to the bar and joining the celebrations but Claire and Emma and their team were superb throughout. They worked tirelessly to ensure everyone was served and their needs accommodated, regularly stopping by to catch up with us, make sure we had everything we needed and were enjoying our stay, as we saw them do across customers in the bar and lounge.
It was noticeable that they looked after and valued their staff as well. Checking in on younger, newer servers to make sure they were ok and were guided as well. To their credit they were as helpful, polite and friendly as Claire and Emma through the busiest of times.
Ps: although we don’t have a dog this is also a very dog friendly pub and many who stayed have clearly been before with their pets and been welcomed.

Having drank in the Wheatsheaf previously it was on our list of options of places to stay. Post Covid restrictions I looked at their website and they seemed to have sensible Covid plans in place. A 4 night stay was booked.
I wasn't disappointed, a one way system, all the staff wearing masks and hand wash everywhere, tables either seat you back to back and/or a screen between your table and others. They have done all they can to make your stay a safe one.
Lovely friendly staff who all worked really hard (the comment from another review about the owners not socialising made me chuckle, they hardly stood still as they were WORKING).
The room was nice and clean, Covid precautions like disposable cups etc were all in place, a comfy bed, nice large shower with lashings of hot water.
Food wise it was good food, well cooked at a good price, you wont leave grumbling about quality or volume.
Another review mentioned the cost may be high, I disagree it was worth every penny to spend time in a nice place, in a nice village amongst nice staff, with plenty of walks from the front door and the major market towns in the Dales a short drive away. Add in all the extra expense for Covid precautions and £90 a night in peak school holiday season was a bargain.
To quote Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger "I'll be back"
Thank you

When we checked in we were greeted by very friendly helpful staff. We were given our keys and were showed to our rooms. The rooms were large very clean and light. The tea and coffee making had plenty of products and nice clean large cups. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and the bedding was very clean and fresh. The bathroom was again spotless with a very large shower which had excellent pressure. The towels were large soft and immaculate. We were on a two night break and after eating in the restaurant the first night we returned the second night simply because the food was that good. The service was great and the food was very hot and very very tasty. Breakfasts were amazing with very tasty and very hot food. Every member of staff we seen were very friendly happy people who made us feel very welcome. Yes we would definitely return as we do not have one thing to complain about. This inn would definitely be winners of 4 in a bed.

Stayed in the self catering apartment from the 17-23 of April with social distancing check in and out due to COVID-19 restrictions.
We’ve been here lots of times now and is a true gem. Both Claire and Emily are fantastic hosts here, with nothing ever being too much trouble, doesn’t matter if you just pop in for a coffee, lunch, dinner or if you are staying overnight, you will all be treated amazingly well.
Closed at the moment apart from self catering and is due to reopen with i’d imagine some COVID restrictions still in place on the 17th of May.
Fantastic location, great for walkers with some great walks right on your doorstep, 15 minute drive to Hawes, Leyburn, 30 minutes from Richmond or Northallerton and markets galore where you can pick up just about anything.

We find the Wheatsheaf absolutely faultless, great food and drinks at very reasonable prices as are the rooms which are always very clean and tidy, great staff who are very knowledgeable of the area and are very willing to help if you have any questions on things to do or directions etc.

Looking forward to going back on the 21st of June when I can meet up with all the staff again and that friendly welcome, not to mention a very nice Black Sheep Beer.

If you book the Wheatsheaf for your stay, you will not be disappointed.

As always on my posts, any questions, queries, please feel free to ask and we will answer you as best as we can.

Enjoy your stay.......

Robert & Elaine

stayed here for one night last weekend - nice clean hotel and COVID safe , good procedures in place . Set in a lovely location close to Ayesgarth.
Evening meals were both of a good standard ,and a nice menu with something for everyone .
Breakfast- could be a bit more generous , after taking our hot food choices ( full English in our case) we were asked in a slightly awkward tone if we would want cereal( kind of felt had to say no and was also thinking that as with various other places we have stayed that we would struggle to eat it all with a good breakfast on its way ) Was a bit disappointed at just one slice of toast each , one egg , no beans , one sausage . I’m sure we could have asked for more but would have meant hunting down staff who were all busy. Shame because it was lovely just not enough for two hungry walkers heading out on a long trek .
We found the ladies who run the hotel to be polite and efficient and their staff were all friendly and pleasant.
Our room was adequate and clean the bed very comfortable however, being a light sleeper I did hear the washing machine Spinning at 5.30 am. This is due to me leaving the window open .

we stayed 3 nights in the duplex, which had lots of space and meant we were not cooped up in a little room with the dog. Aysgarth falls is only 15 to 20 mins walk away by public foot path which the dog enjoyed. The footpath is just across the road so quick access for any doggy constitutionals that are needed, also large car ark at the rear. Host and staff very friendly, nice local beer. Food was reasonable although my sou was served far too hot, it was stll bubbling when the waitress brought it to the table. Obvioulsy it had just come out of the microwave and had she spilt it on eitther her self or me , serious burns would have ensued, my lasagne was also similar , I suspect some of the food is pre batched the re heated, non the less it was tasty. My only real comment would be as a Yorkshireman going back to Yorkshire for a small holiday, why do I find PG Tips in the room, give me Yorkshire Tea! I would thorougly recommend this hotel for dog owners ( and non dog owners)

We booked a 3 night stay back in January and although concerned about the virus we decided to go. They were very flexible about our options but given its remote location we decided to go and take care with contact. They thanked us on arrival for keeping the booking as they had had significant cancellations and were very concerned about their livelihoods. That said the place was spotless and no surface went long without a wipe down. The rooms are cosy and warm with views out over the moors. Quality bedding and towels. As usual the food was fantastic and great value. The meat pie was enormous and so tasty. My wife who had struggled with the pie had a salad the next evening which was unbelievable. The staff are friendly and fun and bend over backwards to help with everything.

Another two night stay at the Wheatsheaf and it was as good as ever. Lovely clean and comfortable room. The food, served at both dinner and breakfast, was fantastic. There has obviously been a lot of effort to make the place as Covid safe as possible with a sensible one way system in operation, loads of hand sanitiser available throughout and a lot of regular cleaning being obvious. As ever, the staff are welcoming, friendly and very hard working . Claire and Emily deserve their success and are to be congratulated.

This place is so good I had to say it 3 times in the title . What an absolute gem. We have just returned from a 2 night stay here and it was faultless from start to finish.
We stayed in the annex, a beautiful little place perfect for us and our little dog.
The atmosphere inside the wheatsheaf was just what we were looking for .Cosy, homely and with staff that really made you feel as if you were part of the family. Emily is fantastic and couldn't do enough to make sure you were happy (as did all the staff we came across.) And her children (that came to play with my daughter ) are a credit to her .Sitting by the fire with a drink in hand was just perfect .

We are already looking at rebooking and bringing other members of our family here.
Highly highly recommend this beautiful gem of a property situated in a perfect location for exploring the beauty of the Yorkshire dales

Stayed for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed the visit. Really pleased with everything including the extremely helpful and pleasant staff through to the meals we ate there. (Breakfasts and evening meal one night) The room was absolutely spotless and very cosy despite low temperatures outside and even snowfall the day we were leaving. We enjoyed sitting in the snug after a days walking and exploring. Tasteful decor - traditional with a modern twist. The staff were excellent, especially the young lady that greeted us on our arrival and was present most of the time we were there. She is an asset to the place and was one of the most professional and helpful people I have ever met in the world of hospitality! Well done Wheatsheaf we will definitely be back in the future.

Hello, apologies for the late reply to you, I’ve been having problems with my trip advisor account. You should receive an email around five days prior to your arrival asking if there is anything that they can help you with, you can either reply to that email on contact them at anytime, but I would advise that you book a table as they get filled rather quickly. You can either book a table in the bar or dining room areas but if you are taking a dog with you then you can only have a table in the bar area. Hope this helps and again apologies for the late reply. Regards Rob

I would contact the Wheatsheaf to ask ("Contact us" link on the website or email listed there). They are open for dinner in the pub so I would guess after dinner/clean-up? They are very kind so if you email ahead of time, I'll bet they can accommodate you.

I'm sure if you email the Wheatsheaf, they'll have some ideas. The town is quite small but they may know someone local or who might be willing to travel. Email address is posted on their website or there is a "contact us" form. If you have a reservation already, you can just reply to it.
