My wife and I wanted to spend a couple of nights away in Helmsley and chose the Royal Oak because we both have such fond memories of this pub from our youth.

We were made to feel most welcome by the young lad who seemed to run the place and we were very pleased with our room (2) ... until we realised that the plumbing wasn’t great. The room was cold for our first night, which was apparently due to a boiler issue, much improved the second night. The shower (pressure) was poor and the sanilflow toilet system worked well, but is noisy and fragrant, more akin to what we’d expect in a caravan, not a Hotel.

Everything else about our stay was excellent though, we loved the fact that it is still clearly a popular pub with the locals. This does mean that there can be significant noise until midnight so if you don’t intend on late nights in the bar, then ear plugs are a must to guarantee sleep. We went prepared so we were all good. The staff all made us feel very welcome and we had no issues with the breakfast or any of the meals we had from the bar.

If you are going to stay here, remember it is a pub first and foremost and is a perfect place to stay for those who like pubs and pub culture, like us.

Popped in tonight on the off chance they might have a table for 6 late in the evening.

Busy as they were the barman and landlady could not be more helpful. Very easy to negotiate the measures in place not like others weve been in this week.
We all felt very safe, and great to see all the sanitising being done by all the staff.

We had starters, mains and puds, honistly you CAN NOT beat home made food and this was exelent(the pies and parmos are to die for) and nothing was to much trouble.

We met the chef Ryan and what a great bloke he is, even as busy as he was he still had a couple of minutes for us.

As a family we were all so impressed that we will be back tomorrow.

We cant recomend the Royal Oak enough!

I visited the Royal Oak today. They were serving drinks and food outside due to Covid Restrictions.
I was met by a very pleasant young lady who showed me to my freshly cleaned table, gave me the relevant form to complete as I dont have the App to sign in to the venue.
I ordered a very nice Chorizo wrap with garlic fries and a
Glass of Wine £10! The best £10 I've spent what a bargain.
The chef was Rachel and she was so lovely, she chatted inbetween service and made my first visit on my own very special.
The team at the Royal Oak are second to none, pleasant, professional and make your visit special.
All Covid procedures were followed and I shall have jo hesitation visiting again. Well done to all.

This hotel is essentially a pub with a few rooms to let above. The room itself was quite small but spotlessly clean and acceptable. Bed was comfortable. Great location on the market square. However there was no tea/coffee/cups in the room, not even a drinking glass for water which we found somewhat strange. This had to be asked for at the bar. This cannot be due to current covid pandemic policies as this is the only hotel operating such a strange policy that we have visited since lockdown restrictions were lifted. The fact that a tray with cups/tea/coffee was left outside our room when requested at the bar would defeat any strange covid policy anyway-so not sure what that was about? Why not have this tray inside the room on check in as one would normally expect? At a price of £100 room only rate this is definitely below the mark.

The pub itself is not what you would call a cosy country pub. Not somewhere we would want to sit and enjoy the evening in. Rather noisy.

The staff were however very pleasant.

Be aware that this pub does not have it's own car park so cars have to be parked in the adjacent public car park limited to a 2 hour parking slot unless you are lucky to find a space on the streets of helmsley, nigh on impossible on a busy Saturday. This meant we had to keep going back to the car every 2 hours to renew our parking ticket as the long stay public car park is a considerable walk away from the hotel . To be fair this is actually stated on the hotel website, but very inconvenient.

The £100 per night room only rate is not value for money. You are paying a premium price for a sub premium hotel, probably due to its location. We will not return.

The worst meal I have had out in a long time. Booked for 1 p.m ordered at the bar, starter served by 1.20, waited until 2.00 before having to ask about our main courses which were then served within a couple of minutes. Starter of calamari was 4 pieces served on a vinegary salad £5.95!!! Three meat roast served with a flood of very salty gravy making the one roast potato and the Yorkshire pudding very soggy. The vegetables consisted of some very hard turnip/swede, one red carrot and a couple of small hard orange carrots. I didn’t even bother tasting the beans and peas. The other beef roast dinner was as bad as mine. The steak pie was ok as that was served with a separate gravy boat. Although the need for a paper serviette to be on the plate was questionable. If there was a zero rating this place deserved it.

My friend and are were camping nearby with our 3 kids and heard good reviews. We couldn’t get in the first night so booked for the next night. When we arrived we were greeted and seated to our table and the staff explained the rules around COVID which was reassuring. There were hand gels all over the place to use also. We ordered our food and it didn’t take long to come but my gosh it was amazing! My friend ordered a Parma which filled the plate it was that huge and the kids meals were decent sizes too. The staff were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend and when we are back in the area we will be coming back.

We had dinner here one evening. Felt for the server as she was on her own in a very busy restaurant. Service was really slow and the food was okay but overpriced for its quality. We had dinner in the Italian restaurant a few doors down and that was exceptional and the price was much better for much better quality. The pizza was poor and looked like it was Microsoft. My sons picked up a slice and it was that soggy all the filling fell off. I wouldn’t not recommend it here as it wasn’t bad but wasn’t great. But perhaps try somewhere else first. Staff were friendly too.

As we were walking the Cleveland Way we had arrived early at the hotel as we had caught the 31x bus from York. However the young lady at check in allowed us to check in early which meant we could off load our bags to the room. The room was very spacious and included a coffee making pod machine and free drinking water bottles. It even included a bath in the on suite. Great location in the centre of the town with lots of eating places nearby. Breakfast was very good and the staff were all really friendly and helpful. They also passed our bags onto the baggage transfer company the following this being our jumping off point to start the trail.

We were shoved in a corner next to a broken chair, I asked for a different table but was refused in case a larger group came in which they didn’t, we soon were in the corner of an empty room. Initially the service was efficient but then we were left with our dirty plates for our stay. Food was nothing special so for people on vacation this place is nothing to get excited about. Prices are at the more expensive end for this standard.

I spent 20 years in the hospitality trade and I have never been so happy in years when visiting a good old fashioned traditional pub local.
We popped in (5 of us plus dog) and had fish and chips and pizzas and they were fantastic.
Tons of cheese on the pizzas, fish was outstanding and best of all, double cooked chips.

Three times we were checked on to see if all was ok by the manager (who was clearly off duty but still helping out), one of the bar staff and the actual chef.

The food was amazing, the staff and locals very friendly and it was so good to see the staff's family in showing how peaceful and friendly the place was.

I definitely recommend it if you want the real traditional experience.

If you want cocktails, craft beers and expensive whisky and no human touch go elsewhere.

If you want traditional pub grub, a dog friendly pub and clearly very caring staff go here.

Very well done Royal Oak, very well done.

We have no dedicated parking spaces, however there is free street parking adjacent to the pub and a car park out the front as well as a long stay car park nearby. Thank you.
