My husband & I have stayed many times over the years at this wonderful hotel. The staff are always welcoming and friendly and the hotel and bar are very doggy friendly. We stayed overnight on Sunday 8/3 and enjoyed an excellent Sunday roast, one of the best I have had. And that cheese board!! Oh wow!!!
The room (22) had had a makeover with the bathroom & soft furnishings finished to a high standard. We stayed as part of the ‘cheeky little getaway’ package (£149) and enjoyed a bottle of chilled Prosecco in our room with £30 each towards our restaurant bill. Excellent deal I honestly don’t know how they do it for the price.
The weather on the Monday morning was kind and we took advantage with a circular walk on the Cleveland Way to Rievaulx Abbey, taking in the magnificent views and lambs in the fields.
Wonderful! We will definitely be back later in the year.

Just back from Helmsley and a 5 day stay in the Black Swan. The hotel was our second choice as we normally stay in The Feathers but they were fully booked. We booked direct with the hotel as they offer better deals. Not only were their rates more expensive than Booking.com and other such sites, they requested full non refundable payment up front to guarantee the best price. It was only later when by chance looking for other
accommodation did I find cheaper
Offers elsewhere. I called the hotel to ask for compensation in the form of dinner one evening during our stay. Eventually I was offered 10% off food and drink. We decided not to eat in the hotel and spend more money with them.
Room 1 was our given dog friendly room. Have to say it was the shabbiest, priciest
dog friendly room we have ever stayed in. An electric heater worked well to take the chill off the room. Just as well as all radiators had valves removed to stop them being used. We had the fire escape stairs outside our window. Glad we didn’t have to use them! Safe to say we will not be back!

Good food and great service.
Our room was a good size with a large, very comfortable bed but was looking ever so slightly tired.
The evening meals were very nice although we felt they were a little expensive for what they were.
Breakfast was excellent and there even was a sausage for the dog!
Service was superb, couldn't have asked for better.
All in all, a very pleasant hotel in a great location and truly dog friendly.

We’ve been Black Swan regulars for over three decades so we were interested to see what difference the Inn Collection Group takeover would make. For our first post-lockdown trip, we booked the supposedly Covid “deep cleaned and disinfected” Junior Suite, we called first to check that it was not a “dog friendly” room. The rooms were not clean and there was a chewed dog toy under a chair, so we were disappointed on both counts - management just apologised. We cannot see how a hotel room can be properly clean after a dog has been running around it.

The Junior Suite is not worth the extra, it comprises two small gloomy rooms with stained carpets and grubby, shabby furnishings, it does have a modernised bathroom, although it had not been properly cleaned. The bedroom overlooks the square and the lounge overlooks the the graveyard. The WiFi was slow, frequently dropping out.

The breakfast experience was sadly different, gone are the crisp white tablecloths, everything of course was affected by the Covid precautions, but the breakfast itself was decent and the staff efficient and attentive. We reviewed dinner in the Gallery restaurant separately.

We’ve stayed at The Black Swan multiple times over the years, but this was our first trip away with our 7-week-old baby, and the staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. They knew we were travelling with a very young child and put us in an accessible, quiet room and made a lovely fuss over the baby. We are in the bar which was cosy and relaxed, and suited our needs perfectly.

The food was high standard as always, and we slept really well in the cosy, comfortable room. Breakfast in bed the next day was exceptional, can’t fault the food or the service.

My only critique is that the bathroom needs some attention, the paint on the walls and the enamel on the bath were both falling off and the taps were very stiff.

Overall, a lovely visit and we’ll be back very soon.

As we heard the Black Swan has been taken over we expected lovely refurbished rooms. Unfortunately the rooms were dated and beds uncomfortable and the bathrooms were old fashioned and needing modernised. There was tea/coffee in the rooms but no bottled water. Staff were all very helpful and friendly. Gardens were beautiful. Our evening meal was delicious however twice the breakfast was cold, bland sausage, fatty bacon and dry roll and we had to keep asking for more toast. This could be a prime hotel in a very historical village but it is overpriced as requires upgrading bedrooms and breakfast.

We came to the Black Swan on their Cheeky break deal. This made our stay worthwhile, otherwise it is quite expensive in the restaurant and bar for the quantity and quality of what you get. The public areas around the reception and staircase to the rooms had a musty smell although this was not the case in the room or other areas of the hotel.

We were staying 2 nights but had to leave after 1 due to the virus restrictions. Room was lovely overlooking the square however we were originally in a room with a side view overlooking the bins so, much to my husband's embarrassment, I asked if it was possible to move and thankfully this was accomodsted at no extra cost. The hotel is lovely and in keeping with its age it's abit higgaldy pigaldy with a maze of narrow staircases and no lift so not v good if you have knee issues etc. You can easily get confused. Some parts traditional and others modern e.g Gallery restaurant and bar. We didn't eat in the hotel - menu v pricey e.g £32 for venison, £26 for pork belly - however we were going to try it on the second night! I think you can have bar meals, we saw some folk having that and they looked nice. Breakfast was lovely and freshly prepared. Agree toast in a napkin was weird and made it abit soggy. Staff were lovely. I think at £190 for B&B it's abit over priced.

We stayed at the Black Swan with friends who have stayed here many times before. They were disappointed with the changes made since the takeover, although could see that some, such as the removal of tablecloths, cutlery etc was due to coronavirus restrictions. Our room was nice, but a little on the shabby side, with stained carpets and the bath had been re-coated at some point and the recoating was peeling off. The shower over the bath leaked. As with other hotels we stayed in recently, toiletries, tea, coffee etc were in sealed bags, but it was not made clear to us, as it had been at other places, whether staff would clean the room during our stay and when I enquired I was told they were leaving it up to the guests to let them know!

Food was lovely, although my husband ordered the same starter on both nights of our stay and while it was amazing on the first night, it didn't bear any resemblance to the same dish on the second night!

The service in all areas of the hotel, garden, bar and restaurant was excellent.

The staff were friendly and accommodating and nothing was too much trouble for them. If I were rating the hotel purely on the staff it would be 5 stars all the way!

We enjoyed our stay here, but I would look around for something similar at a more reasonable price if we were to stay in this area again.

We booked in for B&B for one night during a brief tour of the area.
The first thing to note is that there is ample parking; not always the case with traditional hotels in Yorkshire market towns. The hotel is very conveniently located on the main market square, just a short stroll from all amenities and attractions.
Check in staff were helpful and friendly. It was a long way from reception to our room; not a problem to us but people with reduced mobility may need to request a more accessible room. The room itself was spotless and well-appointed; the bed was huge and one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in.
Breakfast was served in clean and characterful surroundings; there is a good choice on the menu (my wife particularly enjoyed her Eggs Florentine, whilst my Full English ticked all the boxes).
A return visit is most definitely on the cards.

No, the car park spaces are standard width and length with not enough surrounding space for a trailer. There may be local spaces which could accommodate you, the hotel could advise.
