The West Highland Hotel garners appreciation for its dedicated staff and stunning location, with many guests applauding the beautiful surroundings and ease of access to attractions. While the rooms are often found to be cozy, offering beautiful views, opinions vary with some described as palatial and others needing an update. Despite the hotel's cleanliness and comfortable atmosphere, some travelers feel the prices don't match the value, citing overpriced amenities. While the amenities generally receive positive remarks, there are occasional mentions of maintenance issues and slow restaurant service.

A great location, near the station.
Our room was very dark (decor) probably easier to maintain. The bedside lamps are wall mounted but in the middle of the bed so be careful not to bang your head if sitting back on the bed, no chairs in the room. The sea view was a bonus but even the harbour view at the back would likely have been just as interesting.
We didn't eat in the hotel in the evening but the dining room looks lovely, either go in early or reserve to get a table near the window.
Breakfast was really good, nice and fresh but lacking a bit in choice of cereals with no muesli and limited fresh fruit. This is the only hotel where I have ever had half of a sausage (Scottish square sausage should be square, not cut into a triangle, obviously half each).

I was not sure what to expect from this hotel as I've found quite a lot of the hotels in the north of Scotland to be fairly mediocre. From the outside I was expecting similar of this hotel but actually it was far better than I expected.

The reception area is quite beautiful and exactly what you would expect from a traditional Scottish hotel with a large stair case, plenty of Whisky and a nice patterned carpet. The corridors looked rather dated but the room was a pleasant surprise, light airy and spacious. However the best for me was the absolutely stunning views over to the various islands, and the sunsets in the evening. On the top floor where my room was, all the room are on the "sea" side so you get to enjoy this view. You also get to enjoy this view from the restaurant and terrace.

Mallaig is very small and the centre is only a minute or so walk and less than 5 minutes to the station and various ferry departure points so everything is close at hand. There is a car park which whilst not large I always found a space.

Staff were friendly and helpful and the communal areas of the hotel are very nice.

The only issues I had really was the food service, hence not 5 stars. You must book breakfast the night before by filling in a form which is rather tedious. Whilst the hotel says you may not get the time you want if you don't hand this in before 9pm I always did hand it in before 9pm - but still didn't get the time I wanted on one day.

The service can be quite slow. On one day I had booked the ferry to Inverie at 8:30am so I booked breakfast for 7:30am (the earliest). At 7:35 the breakfast room still wasn't even open with no staff to be seen. I asked at reception who seemed to get things started but even then by 8:05am my breakfast still hadn't arrived. Needing to get back to my room and then get to the ferry to 8:15am I had to give up on having the full breakfast and only got toast and yoghurt. Not great if you choose a time and 35 minutes later, still no breakfast. However the food when it did arrive I though was very good.

Similarly there is a restaurant but you have to book to get a space. I was here to walk parts of the coast. I don't know exactly what time I am going to get back because I don't know exactly how long each walk is going to take. So I didn't book which meant I could only get into the restaurant one evening I was there. To be fair the hotel does make this clear in emails but it's still a shame. The other days I was told it was full (despite seeing lots of empty tables). It's a shame they don't seem to have enough room in the restaurant, perhaps it should be bigger (and the views are wonderful).

On the night I did eat there the food was excellent and the service good. It's just a shame there isn't enough capacity as there are few other places to eat in Mallaig.

Overall it is a nice place to be and I thought a good hotel, but a few niggles that could be improved.

We were given a room on the top floor, difficult to carry the luggage but so worth it for the views. The room was very clean, the bed very comfortable and there was a nice chair to sit and absorb the stunning views. Only small gripe was the shower which was either too hot or too cold. The hotel was very Covid safe, sanitised, sealed rooms, hand sanitizer every few yards and perspex screening in the dining room between all tables. Staff were pleasant and friendly.

We booked here as it was advertised as an upmarket hotel. The lobby was lovely and gave a warm and cosy first impression. Lots of tartan, leather chairs and ornaments.

We were put in room no1. What a disappointment! The room was decorated with drab colours and chipped black paintwork which gave it a depressing feel. Twin beds, one of which sloped to one side, a brown wooden wardrobe and desk, ran along the wall at the side of one bed with minimal room to move. A nail was sticking out of the side of the mirror and the TV did not work. We were told in reception to wiggle the receiver dish in order to get a signal. After trying this with no success we gave up! The following day the receiver had been replaced but again this did not work, so no TV for the duration of our stay.
Two paper cups, 2 teabags and 4 sachets of milk were all that was provided for refreshment. A travel kettle was provided but we had to take the whole appliance, base too to the bathroom sink to fill it. This was rather cumbersome.
The bathroom had a good shower with plenty of hot water and Clean towels but nowhere to hang them near by while showering. There were no tumblers for storing and rinsing while toothbrushing.
A hairdryer which was powerful and did the job was provided but the pat testing was overdue by 17 months. Basic health and safety!!! We had a reasonably good view of the docks from our room.
We had pre booked a table in the restaurant and were seated at a table in the corner near the entrance, despite there being numerous free tables with a view of the bay which were vacant and remained so during our visit. We both ordered the steak and ale pie which was fairly tasty but the accompanying vegetables were barely warm and there was no gravy. I ordered the Scottish mess which was supposed to have a honey and whisky sauce. Not so it was basically cream, one or two strawberries which had not been hulled and a strawberry sauce. Needless to say we didn’t choose to eat here again
On the whole the staff were very pleasant and the breakfast was really good if a little greasy.
Rooms were not serviced due to COVID.
This hotel is overpriced for the value of service and comfort of rooms. Not payment for your stay is taken when you check in!!!!

Myself and my wife stayed at this hotel from the Tuesday to the Saturday, it was very easy to find(most things are in Mallaig as it’s not particularly big) They have everything in place with regards to Covid, all guests must wear masks when walking about and there are hand sanitisers everywhere.

The building of the hotel was built in the 1700’s so is quite quaint with its book cases and its large leather sofas in the lounge area. My wife and I had the superior room which was perfectly clean however the furniture and decor was a bit shabby and could be doing with an upgrade.. There was a tv in the room however this did not appear to have a very good connection and would be as well not being there in the first place.. Our room looked out onto Mallaig railway station where you could see the Jacobite (Harry Potter ) train coming and going two or three times a day.. the restaurant was pleasant and well set out with regards social distancing.

The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful... I would recommend this lovely quaint hotel for short stays to explore the area. However be prepared for the place to look a little worn...

My wife and I would quite happily stay here again.

We just want to congratulate the West Highland Hotel for its thorough and extensive application of COVID safeguards in the bar / lounge area and throughout the hotel as far as we could see. The signage is excellent, clearly indicating where you should go, what you need to do to keep yourself and others safe (face coverings required of course), ensuring social distancing throughout, Perspex panels right across the bar, screens, assiduous and courteous staff taking your order and everyone wearing masks of course and wiping down tables and surfaces, contacts taken for contact tracing (the only one we have encountered so far in the area), etc. etc. This made us feel very safe while there and a feeling of confidence that they are doing everything possible to protect their customers and staff. We live in a small vulnerable community and knowing the hotel is doing everything possible to keep us safe is gratifying. Thank you, West Highland Hotel.

This was my first visit for seven years having had several visits previously and never disappointed. The hotel has undergone significant upgrading since my last visit most striking is the addition of the terrace and terrace restaurant. Outdoor seating on the terrace and and a very nice restaurant menu at sensible prices a really good upgrade with views across to the islands. My single room had recently been refurbished and was perfectly comfortable with enough room to keep luggage out of the way and a nice view from the front of the hotel.
All the staff are very helpful and pleasant.
The Covid 19 rules and guidance measures are absolutely first class and I felt completely safe and comfortable here. 11/10 to the WHH for this.

It mightn't be the fanciest of hotels, but we had a perfectly good stay here and it's ideally situated in the town. We booked a standard room so not one of their more expensive ones and it was very small, but you could tell a lot of thought has gone in to fitting in everything you need in a small space and it was immaculately clean. We slept very well in the comfy bed. What the room might lack in luxury it more than made up for in the incredible view. To be able to see a stunning sunset over Rum and Eigg from your bed is a wonderful thing!
We were surprised to see some notices up around the hotel asking guests not to be abusive to staff, however in the evening we were dining in the Terrace restaurant and it became evident why the notices were necessary. We had to listen to a chap loudly remonstrating at one of the waitresses about his steak being over done in a very aggressive manner. Completely uncalled for, mistakes can happen anywhere you go but there are ways and means to go about having them redressed and it was very sad to see that the lovely staff here have to put up with such unacceptable behaviour. They don't deserve it!

This review is mostly about the food service, which was bad. The hotel service overall was alright but not as good as it should’ve been for the cost.

The room was nice enough, except for that rate there were few amenities, just some cake soap and body wash, no shampoo or conditioner. The TV kept popping off, like a poor internet connection maybe. Other reviewers here have described the nice things.

We booked two nights with breakfast at £145 per night. When I booked I asked if they had soya milk and they assured me they did.

No soya milk at breakfast because they “didn’t get a delivery”. There’s a shop down the road where someone could’ve (and should’ve) bought some.

The toast was cold, the “orange juice” is Capri Sun and the “full Scottish” was a plate of meat, no beans, no tomato, just a meat bomb. I mean, you order breakfast from a checklist the night before, so it’s all planned out. They still got it wrong.

Second breakfast I modified it to include veggies. We got served porridge and no hot breakfast and were ignored for 30 minutes while other diners who came after us ate. When the hot breakfast finally came (no wait staff even checked on us, I had to get up and ask where our food was) there were no eggs. My porridge was cold. Wait staff never checked on us once.

They did refund that one breakfast, but I had to complain, which isn’t something you want to do on your holiday.

While the dinners were quite good the service was similarly irritating and amateurish. If this type of thing bothers you I’d steer clear of eating here.

Book through a discount site, not directly from the hotel. Definitely not worth the cost and there is better accommodation in Mallaig.

I first visited last year and wanted to bring my elderly father up this summer. Obviously, we thought Covid restrictions would have been an issue, however were pleasantly surprised! Firstly the views from the hotel are simply spectacular. The staff have been exceptionally friendly and welcoming as ever. Most importantly the set-up for social distancing/ hygiene is first class and we feel really confident about safety and well-being - it’s clear that a lot of time and investment has taken place to make visitors feel safe and happy. Thank you. Andrew
