Detailed Reviews
My wife and I stayed for a second time (first in Nov 2019) and highly recommend them!
Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful and will go out of their way to ensure a perfect stay.
We preferred to hike and use the wellness areas. The guided tours are excellent and the guide (Emanuella) is a fountain of knowledge and a delightful person. The wellness areas are very clean and well maintained and a perfect retreat after a hiking tour.
We stayed on one of the smaller rooms (Morgenrotzimmer) but it was quite roomy and still offered a nice view of the valley and then Sonnenberg / St. Martin. Due to the layout, all rooms provide excellent views.
The food service is among the best - well stocked continental breakfast buffet with the option to order additional items freshly prepared (e.g. eggs, bacon etc...). But the highlight is the evening dinner. Well thought out 5 course menus including a Vegi menu as well as ala Carte options in case any one or all of the items is not what you prefer. The Staff here are highly professional and knowledgeable. Of course, they offer an abundance of wines from South Tirol as well as other areas. Here, the staff prove to be excellent in their recommendations - when in doubt, their insight never fails to please.
Speaking of wine - one of the many highlights is a weekly Wine Tasting hosted by Hr. Dietl. This is a MUST for any wine lover. We attended both years and enjoyed it immensely. To be honest, I had never attended a wine tasting before, other than those sometimes offered at a winery mainly trying to sell their wares. I was afraid it would be a stuffy affair. I was pleasantly surprised. Hr. Dietl is quite entertaining, combining a vast knowledge of wines in general with wit and stories which makes the whole affair unforgettable! Do not miss this!
All together, if you a re planning a trip to Vinschgau, South Tirol you will never regret choosing the Hotel Matillhof!
A note about Covid.
Obviously, due to the restrictions, this year was a bit different than the last. But in the Hotel the rules were well defined and there was an abundance of hygiene stations and the mask rules were not overly intrusive. Distancing was not difficult and the wellness areas offered more than enough space to relax.
We thank the Dietl Family and the entire staff for an unforgettable stay - we will be back in 2021!

Response from , Inhaber at Hotel Matillhof
Responded 2 Nov 2020
Dear Mr. Boblitz, Thank you very much for your great review and of course the time you took to review your holiday and your impressions with us and to comment on them in detail. It was a real pleasure for us to welcome you and your wife back with us. We are very happy to hear, that you enjoyed your second holiday at Matillhof - despite Covid - as much as you enjoyed your first last year. And we hope this stay will as well remain a great memory. Of course, we are happy to pass your kind words of praise on to our employees. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you again in 2021. Until then we, stay safe. With best regards from Latsch the Matillhof team

We stayed here with 2 rooms and this is a hotel where you have everything you need for a nice weekend away or a holiday in South-Tirol.
We booked half-board so most of our meals we enjoyed at the hotel. The quality was very good, there was a different variety every day, whether it was breakfast, afternoon snack or dinner, there was plenty of variety. A big downside was the inflexibility at dinner time when it came to eating earlier. We had 2 small children with us, so we are used to eating early, however the restaurant doesn't open until 7PM. For the kids they arrange food earlier, but they then have to wait an hour or more until you are done. On one day they offered us to eat earlier, with the kids, but that wasn't offered consistently. On the other days they didn't offer us this possibility.
The quality is fantastic and the service is really friendly and proffessional, but that was a major downside for us.
The wellness facilities are fantastic, we absolutely loved it there. There is a pool, several sauna and steam rooms with different climates, massage rooms and so on.
The owner was very friendly and proffessional, she was cordial and pleasant and did everything in her power to help us out (except with dinner). We had brought a baby phone, but it had broken underway, so we asked for one and they have a few for you to borrow. Unfortunately we couldn't get the one brand to work and the other one didn't reach into the dining room. She also gave us a great wine recommendation and excursion tips.
The hotel is situated in a very rural area with lots of apple orchards. It's beautifully located in a valley but close enough to go up the mountains. There is a train station in the village which can take you directly to Meran, the nearest big city. However be warned there's a slow train and a fast train and the slow one takes its time.

We stayed for one week in the suite Schloss Montani in the historic castle, called „Schlössl“ by the locals. All in all a very romantic stay. In this hotel you really feel treated like a queen/king. Charlotte Dietl and the hotel staff are very friendly and pamper you all day long.
The cuisine meets a very high standard with gourmet menus every evening. Combined with the local wine the food tasted just delicious. A real treat! The chef uses a lot of local ingredients and could surprise us every day anew with very tasty, freshly prepared dinner courses. On two occasions we could visit the kitchen which we enjoyed a lot.
After hiking or mountain biking we relaxed in the spa which offers steam bath, sauna and more. We most enjoyed the thermal beds, salt bath and the infra-red cabine. To reload your batteries I can also recommend the Laconium.
A special experience is taking part in the wine tasting event in the historic wine cellar of the Schlössl. It is very interesting to listen to Hansjörg Dietl´s remarks on the south tyrol and italian wines he opened for us. We prefer the elegant south tyrol wines over the italian ones.

My husband, my son and myself stayed at this hotel end of July. To be considerate, the weather was not optimal, so the use of the outdoor swimmimg pools (quite nice) was near on impossible.
Whilst waiting for our room my son (4years) checked out the playgroud in front of the lobby entrance. To say the least this was an absolute safety hazard. Poles coming out of the ground (instability) and completely broken wooden steps leading to the slide.
Then came the room: St Stepahnssuite was a gaudy nightmare - but I believe this is just a matter of taste. Not a matter of taste is that the fixtures on shower etc were nearly all coming out of the wall which could lead to a serious accident.
Our sons pull out bed was so rock solid he could hardly sleep there (but still costs). We were looking forward to the oh so acclaimed childrens programm (one of our main reasons to chose this hotel). This was literally non-existent. The playroom was always dark and empty and Larissa? (the girl supervising the kiddies) remained to our familiy a phantom. All in all you pay through the nose and receive a bundle of non-existent amenities and lies. One thing decent was the food (extra rating blob).
Save your money and go somewhere more simple, especially with kids.

The Matillhof was once again our preferred destination in South Tyrol this year and the all-round relaxation and holiday feeling led us to extend a week.
We felt comfortable throughout in dignified hospitality, spectacular surroundings and diverse leisure opportunities.
Whether challenging mountain tours, Things to do by bike, visits to the numerous sites of the rich history of Val Venosta, Shopping trips, beauty offers or a huge spa and sauna landscape, everyone of all ages will find something here to make their individual holiday highly active, eventful, but also quiet, contemplative and enjoyable.
The hotel team and hosts are always there with great attention to their guests and their well-being.
Assessments such as those of my predecessor here at TRIPADVISOR should therefore be regarded as individual opinions and "statistical slips".

Family run hotel with very good service and flexible, high quality cuisine. Ideal location for hiking trips to Martelltal, Schnalstal and much more
Spa area offers numerous possibilities. The daily 5.30 p.m. infusion in the panoramic sauna completes the hiking day.

Everything is just right here, every corner radiates warmth and calm, the food is an experience, the hospitality is honest and genuine. You feel warmly embraced. The hikes with the hiking fairy Emanuela are always interesting and there is a lot of laughter and always a lot of learning. Charlotte is an attentive and dear hostess.

We stayed 4 nights in this hotel in Laces. Mrs. Dietl, who runs the hotel, together with her daughter, immediately welcomed us with extreme courtesy and helpfulness, answering our many questions about excursions and bike trips to do in the surroundings. Suite Medardus very beautiful and extremely bright as well as panoramic. Excellent food, both for breakfast and dinner and afternoon snacks. Assistance to our two children with games and activities. We celebrated our wedding anniversary there and there were no shortage of pleasant surprises from the staff, including a delicious cake after dinner. Wine tasting done in the cellar with Mr. Memorable Dietl: 4 white and 7 red wines of excellence, in pleasant company and with accurate explanations. SPA very nice, elegant and complete. Absolutely recommended both for families but also for couples, as the environment is very quiet and relaxing. Many thanks to Mrs. Dietl for her affection and to all the staff. See you soon, Giuseppe Spadaro and family

The Matillhof would like to be a 4* hotel! Unfortunately, this review is a dream, far from reality. Beautiful photos coupled with a bit of blah don't make a good hotel.
Located in the middle of the village, the car traffic is not to be missed. Unfortunately, you go on holiday in the parking lot. The hotel terrace, the pool, the so-called sunbathing area; is all very limited and looks much more beautiful in the photos on the Internet than it really is. Overall not at all to feel good and without concept. In the wellness area (basement) everything very dark and not inviting.
The dining rooms: Rather dark (except the small conservatory) and narrow, The terrace is small and practically part of the parking lot, is not eaten there. Cosiness and atmosphere to feel good you search in vain
Breakfast: Overall a strange offer, about 20 jams, but otherwise seems to be saving everywhere. The service is completely overwhelmed and planless and responds to any request rather irritable.
Dinner: The map always reads quite well, the implementation is lower average for South Tyrol. Drink prices, however, want to keep up, even tap water is charged at EUR 2.50.
The rooms: The suites on floor 4 are brand new, there is nothing to complain about, towels and bathrobes smelled musty, probably came out of the moth box.
Overall, you get the impression that the hotel is run unlovingly, on arrival a tired "hello"; welcome you never feel. "Family-run" is not a special quality feature here.
There would still be 100 smaller things to complain about, I want to do without. But my conclusion is: In South Tyrol you will find much nicer places than the Matillhof. The sometimes very good reviews of other guests I cannot understand.
