Overall I felt like this hotel and town catered to tour groups and we felt like a second class guests at the hotel.  I have traveled to over 40 countries, and this hotel and town were probably the most overrun with tour groups and bus drivers that did not care about other drivers.  When we arrived to check in, there was a small parking area in front of the lobby that was mainly occupied by tour buses making it difficult for passenger cars to park. Our fjord view room in the main building required us to go from the main lobby upstairs by elevator through the outside of a dining area and back downstairs by elevator to the lowest level.  We did have a view, but it felt like a second class rooms, and it felt like worst location in the hotel.  We asked about switching rooms, but could not and almost switched hotels the next day as we had not booked the second night.  Parts of the room felt decent, but not up to the level I expect and look forward to from a Scandinavian hotel. Some elements of the room felt cheap and lacked care.  For example, the table between chairs had a large burn mark and was probably among the cheapest tables I have seen in a hotel.  The room was relatively small, but perhaps not unexpected for Scandinavia.

Location and would we stay again?
We booked one night and were going to see if we liked the hotel before adding our planned second night as we had some flexibility.  I had wanted to stay at a smaller higher rated hotel just outside town, but we settled on this one given its location at the foot of the fjord and being in town and decided it was not worth the effort.  I would probably not stay here again given the hotel is overrun with tour groups that the hotel values more and aligns its okay quality.  Also, its large size combined with location makes it difficult to get to your room, as our room required two elevators.

Trip Considerations
Staying two nights fit nicely with our plan as we wanted to do a loop drive starting with morning ferry through Geirangerfjord to Hellesylt and return via Gamle Strynefjellsvegen (county road).  This loop was planned to avoid backtracking and do our best to keep the sun behind us for photos. The day finished with a decent back into Geirangerfjord.  I will also say the weather in the fjords is finicky as we did our best to pick a good weather month based on our overall trip and priorities.  We went in July based on looking at historical weather.  We had three non-sunny days in Geirangerfjord and would have stayed another night if the weather forecast had looked promising. We had a contingency day in our schedule giving us a better chance of getting a sunny day at Trolltunga and/or Geirangerfjord. If we did not need it, we would have a day in Bergen where we have been on a prior trip to Scandinavia.  The locals had told us that this June was actually unusually sunny and warm.

Nice modern hotel, beautiful location in front of the Geiranger fjord, well equipped and spacious rooms, reasonable price for Norway (means expensive).

All of this would deserve a higher rating, but a very strange decision has been taken by the hotel management: no more room cleaning to avoid contact with the guest clothes and equipment!

If you want clean towels or toilet paper, you must go to pick them up at the reception desk.

Of course, tariffs, that normally include a daily cleaning of the rooms, have not been reduced accordingly.

An amazing use of the pandemia to improve the bottom line, but where is the service?

We stayed here while driving the country. A travel agent made our reservation. When we saw our room I almost started crying. Sure I was tired and hungry but it was truly bad. It looked like it hadn't been updated since the 70s or 80s. Really old. Really out of date. We had dinner in town and went back to the hotel. I asked if there were any rooms in the newer section (assuming there was a newer section). I was told there was one room but it would cost us more (with a panoramic view--our old room had a view of the fjourd too). I asked to see the room- when the employeed opened the door for us I immediately said we'd take it (it was only 200 NOK or $20 USD more). It was a night and day difference. The older (lower) building is awful. We had the buffet breakfast which was very nice. Good location for walking to the tourist locations (restaurants and shops).

We paid 2400 Norwegian kroner for an old room for 1 night, that really needs updating. The receptionist was really friendly and helpful. We chose the buffet for dinner. The food was cold, lacking in choice. The sweet menu had tinned pears and peaches and cost 395kr per person. Roll on next year when these hotelleiers can no longer rip off people

The setting is sublime, and you have a wonderful view from your window or balcony if you book one facing the fjord (we didn’t), but, view and excellent breakfast buffet aside, it’s a distinctly average hotel.

Our room was well equipped, but quite tired and worn for the price. They somehow forgot to clean it (we stayed two nights), so instead we had to make do with clean towels from the overworked reception staff.

Staffing seems to be a problem - reception always seemed to be stretched; the bistro restaurant was closed; the lounge bar, we were told, was only open on an ad hoc basis.

We ate in the restaurant on our first night. Service wasn’t good. We were ignored for fifteen minutes after being seated, even though they weren’t busy. Ironically, we were eventually dealt with by the trainee on reception who checked us in earlier. No sign of management. After a poor start, the food was very good. Risotto was excellent but presentation (served in a cereal bowl) and portion size left something to be desired. The quality and choice at the breakfast buffet was excellent.

Wi-Fi was pretty rubbish and prone to sudden dropouts.

Parking is free but limited and not controlled. It’s pot luck whether you get a space and I suspect not all the cars belonged to guests.

I don’t think they have to try too hard to fill the rooms here. If they invested in a refurbishment and sorted out their staffing issues it could be a great hotel but I think they just settle for being average.

Easily the worst accommodation of our entire Norway trip, and it happened to be the most expensive.
Room they gave us had disgusting stains on the sides. Fridge didn't work. Stain on a towel. Phone didn't work.
Relocated us to another room, fridge was missing altogether.
Relocated us to a 3rd room. This time there was an exposed electrical socket.
No covers on the bed base. Phone didn't work. Fridge was heating up rather than cooling.
The staff member was friendly and trying to help but even when I told her the exposed electrical socket could kill someone, she really didn't seem all that bothered.
Breakfast had great variety but ran out of a lot of things.
All in all a terrible experience, such a shame as they are in a beautiful location and they certainly charge for it.

Our experience of 2 nights was just perfect.
We was staying in newer building floor 10 in room with the view to the fjord, this room was also booked in advance. So we got what we wished for!
Staff was really helpful to check us in when arriving late night. Special thanks to finnish girl @ reception!

Room was a litle oldish, but clean, and had everything you need, everything was also working, so no complanes. Bed was comfortable. The best thing i gues was the balcony with the view to fjord, we spendid many hours there just sitting and enjoing the scenery.

Breacfast was perfect in eveery way, food was good and versastile.

Did not dine in hotel restaurant, so can't comment that.

Car parking was a bit challenging cause there is no dedicated parking, and if you see location youll understand lack of space especielly during summer peak season.

Nice view, big plus that dogs were allowed. Very good service and we had a pleasant stay.

Didn’t like that the beds were two single beds put together. Also the rooms weren’t very sound proof, could easily hear noises.

We stayed there 1 night, never again.
For 2200 nok / night ( appx. 200 USD) we got a room as on pictures.
We heard the neighbours and the dog bell..
Service was nice, breakfast nothing special.
The hotel view was not worth the price and hotel experience.

This hotel is situated close to the everything. We ve got the nice room with the balcony. This hotel is all fashioned so they should make over this place soon. The lounge bar was strange no red wine but they had a lot of other drinks. The price for one night was high but i understand they need income after corona.
