We have booked the accomodation using booking.com, then I've got a call that this hotel is participating in a DnB bank's program, that if you pay more than 2000kr, you will get 1000kr back. He made us book 4 breakfasts, so that we would be over the limit. When we came, we've met the other lady that didn't really had a clue how things work. She told us nothing about that breakfast was at another place, luckily I saw a paper on the wall saying that. She then gave us vouchers for two breakfasts instead of four. I'm glad I can math, so I have asked again and we've got two more. She told us also that we have to pay the whole price to then get refunded 1000. The property was nice, except that it didn't say anywhere that the toilet was OUTSIDE, so you had to take on shoes and clothes if you wanted to go there at night. We waited for two monthes to get our money back. When we contacted the owner, he said, that DnB wrote to him, that the campaign was just to support the hotels, so we will get nothing. We sent him link to the rules clearly saing the opposite, then he responded that we have payed already discounted price, which was not true, as we could get the same price via bookng.com. So we wrote to DnB and they have transfered us the money. I don't know what happened to their agreement with Lunheim, they didn't mention it.

Response from John Davis, General Manager at Lunheim in Geiranger

It is obvious that this Ukrain-Norwegian guest is not satisfied with the treatment she received here, but she is clearly mixing three different things. We have standard rates without breakfast, rates with breakfast, and we have discounted last minute rates at times. We have excellent rooms upstairs with a high standard and of course with ensuite bathrooms, and we have a budget accomodation in a ground floor flat. We had discounted rates with and without breakfast during the DNB campaign. I see from the E mail correspondance that these guests were offered 1. a discounted rate of 2300,- for a 2 day stay, a high standard bedroom with a fjord view, ensuite bathroom and breakfasts. 2. a discounted rate of 1700,- for a 2 days stay in the ground floor flat with breakfasts. They used the DNB campaign offer and paid the discounted price of 2300,- for a 2 day stay in an upstairs bedroom with an ensuite bathroom and 4 breakfasts. Like everyone else they walked the 40 metres up to the breakfast restaurant. The bill was paid with a Bankaxept (debitcard) transaction. When they later claimed that they should have been paying 1700,- and demanded a 1000 NOK refund on an already discounted rate I could not meet that demand.

The host Ian canceled our booking suddenly because he didn't like our one night stay, so that he can get a 2 night stay for more profit. We were shocked to receive a call from bookings.com at midnight 1 am our time to be told the booking has been canceled! We were blamed to intend to have 3 people stay in a 2 persons' room. It was never our intention as we booked another room ( via bookings.com as well )nearby for the third person our daughter. The reason I indicated there are 3 guests is simply because the host asked us how many people are coming so that he can arrange the room. At that point, I thought it would be good that we don't have to stay in two different places as he can only offer one room for us.

Response from John D, Resepsjonssjef at Lunheim in Geiranger
Responded 15 Mar 2019
Whilst I do understand that this guest feels that we do not have respect for his wishes it is important that both he and we follow Norwegian law. When a guest books a room for two days which is denoted for max occupancy 2 guests then that is what we are contracted to provide. When the guest cancels the two day booking and makes a new one day booking for a room for two guests that is fine. When the guest informs us three months later that they are actually three guests (two parents and a 13 year old daughter), that creates a challenge which we can not always solve. Lunheim could not provide accomodation for three persons in two rooms at the price of one room and cancelled the booking as a breach of contract. This guest has since attempted to persuade the OTA to hit Lunheim with an Invoice to cover the costs of their relocation, without success.

The guest house provided us with everything we needed. It was also convenience to have a guest kitchen on the second floor which offered a good view of fjord . The family room is very clean and comfortable room. The location is perfect, just 10 mins walk up to the hill to see Geiranger Fjord. The host was very nice and helpful. He gave us a lot of tips for driving in the snow. And we had fun playing with their horses. A very comfortable guest house with a warm hospitality.

Good afternoon Kr Tsui, and thank you for your most positive review. Helping Asian visitors to keep their car on the road in winter when road conditions are challenging is a normal gesture here in western Norway. Thank your wife and her sister for visiting Geiranger and I hope that they got good photos of the blue hour in the morning. Ian D. reception

What a place Geiranger is, amazingly beautiful, and it wouldn't do justice to be here and not stay atleast for a night. Lunheim accomodation is one of the economical stay options just outside town. Well a few miles uphill i'd say. The owner is a chatty old scottish man who lives here with his wife, and he sure has lots of interesting stories to share :-). They rent out rooms from this place which has varying quality. The cheapest room sold on the online booking portals is very peculiar and so we'd like to explain what it is all about in order to give a clear picture to the readers. It is essentially 3 rooms in the basement which have been converted into a bedroom, a kitchen and a washroom. So there is this particular smell in the area, and you need to get out to go to the washroom. Having said that overall the cleanliness was not bad. And then there are better rooms inside the house, slightly higher priced. There is a table set up outside overlooking the fjord below where we sat till late with a bottle of whiskey and watched the sun light fade away and it was a scene we may never forget in our lives. The owner will try to sell stuff to you, some service or the other. We were not particularly bothered by it, as coming from Asia, this was not unusual to us. However not everyone likes it, but then they are here to make a living isn't it? Overall the stay was average, not the best we had in that price, but the view was the best..

Good evening, and thank you for sharing your opinion. It is correct that Lunheim Accomodation has budget accommodation on the ground floor and at a somewhat higher price niveau upstairs. The budget accomodation is what you chose and you thereby saved approx. NOK 400,- per day compared to our somewhat more spacious rooms upstairs which all have ensuite bathrooms. These ground floor rooms have been rented out for decades, we receive comments about space to relax in and affordable prices. The bedroom&the bathroom were completely renovated in 2016.The kitchen was renovated in 2017. The bedroom and the sitting room/ kitchen are on the ground floor , with light from large double-glazed windows, and they are not in a basement. The bathroom is in the basement. Our garden has a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, some guests will help their children to find blueberries, some find blackcurrants, here are a few wild strawberries. There are actually 3 tables... seating 8 guests out in the garden, guests who wish to grill some dinner have unlimited access to our barbecues. In D. reception

Pls do me a favor and at least read the entire review before making up your mind - I know it's a bit long, but it will hopefully answer some of your questions and concerns. My basic requirements for choosing hotels on our Norway trip - reasonable price (in comparison to others in the area) and convenient location for transportation since we were taking buses, trains and boats. Unfortunately, in Geiranger, it seems most of the hotels were booked up solid for tours and we ended up booking at Lunheim - which is not in the town; it is several kilometers outside of town way up on the hill. Since incoming transportation was available and communication with the owner prompt and concise, I resigned ourselves to trying to make the best of the situation. (Hearing that taxis from town for the 2+ km was over 200NOK did not make me feel any better.) Plus, the only information I could find said that the only way up was to walk on the narrow and winding road - sharing it with buses and cars galore. As we sat in the town outside of the Joker market after loading up on supplies, there was an endless stream of cars, buses and people - yes, there was a cruise ship docked and tour groups everywhere. I was beginning to regret my decision to stay in Geiranger - perhaps we would have been better off arriving from Andalsnes by bus and then taking the UNESCO bus to Sogndal straight away !! But, too late now ..... Well, Ian came down to pick us up and we fought the traffic up to the accommodation ... we stepped out .... and saw the view ..... so amazing .... so peaceful !!! We got ourselves settled into one of the nicest rooms we've ever stayed in (including with family and friends!) - the room looked as if it was set up for the owners ... comfortable, plenty of lighting, storage for all of our bags, extra towels, a normal sized bathroom and shower and electrical outlets everywhere you'd want them to be - near the bed, at the desk. Perhaps Ian will scoff and say that's the minimum requirement, but trust me, I've been in a lot of hotel rooms and people's houses that were less thought out !!! The kitchen was fully stocked as well with the requisite pots and pans and cutlery and dishware, as well as coffee makers and toaster. More importantly, they have stocked the kitchen with coffee and tea and oil and vinegar, the kinds of things that travelers need and don't want to buy and leave or lug around for a few nights stay. There is even a dishwasher, so as long as everyone loads up after each meal, all of the dishes are sterile and clean for the next guests. (But no microwave ;-) :-) ) We ended up cooking salmon and rice and having a nice salad on the side. As it turns out, the location was PERFECT for what we wanted to do - some hiking. This house is very close to numerous trailheads of varying difficulty; we took the Storseterfossen waterfall hike, the Holemyrane hike and almost out to Vesterasgardfjell ... and Flydaljuvet is within walking distance. We even took the trails down to the Union Hotel and then back up to Vesteras farm - about 30 minutes each way. So, we were not as isolated as I feared and the location got us to exactly where we wanted to be - close to hiking (from the Union Hotel, it is about a 10-15 minute further walk to the Joker grocery store) And, after seeing the crowds near the port, we were so happy to not be in the middle of it ! Besides, there really isn't that much to see in the town itself. So, if you have a car, the location shouldn't be an issue for you and you'll have a nice room for your stay and a nice kitchen to make your meals, including having a nice coffee in the morning with a fantastic view. Actually, better for you since you won't have to fight for a parking space in town. If you're without a car but interested in hiking, this location and accommodation are perfect for you. If you like to sit with thousands of other members of the human race with not a lot else to do, then you're better off either staying near the port or coming and going via cruise ship.

Hey you two. Thank you for a remarkably detailed and positive review.. You left out the small detail about the barbecue in the garden but.. you are right about the peace and quiet. We are very careful about which trees to cut and which trees we need for shade and sound baffling because we also enjoy the views in the garden … Ian & Inger
