Travellers' Choice
For true Highland hospitality come to the Highlander, a hotel renowned for its good food and warm welcome. The hotel is an ideal base for touring the North of Scotland with mountain ranges, forests, lochs and river valleys waiting to be explored. Wind down in our inviting restaurant serving an array of dishes made from locally sourced produce. Perhaps a wee dram from the bar would suit; choose a whisky from one of the many local distilleries for which this area is famous for throughout the world.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed here Easter weekend with our pup Frank. Hotel staff are so welcoming and friendly especially to Frank! Dogs very welcome, don’t expect the ritz when you stay but it’s a perfect base for a weekend away with the dog plenty walks nearby and room was spotlessly clean too. Enjoyed it so much we have booked again for a couple of weeks time.

Stayed for 3 nights in a good sized clean and well equipped room on a room only rate. Excellent breakfasts served by a superb team of waiting staff, was good value at 12.95 included a well cooked full breakfast, with a good supply of fruit, juice and cereals. We had 2 nights dinner, again good value, super service with "good pub food". Highly recommended, and we will return.

Staying over Easter was a disaster from the start. We arrived with a disabled scooter on a coach after a very long drive from North Wales. We found that the ramps are too short and access into reception is difficult until a bolted door was undone. When we first arrived we were shown to a room along a narrow rough path overgrown with vegetation so we were given a different room but this again had difficult access as the way to our bedroom was through an emergency exit and along a narrow corridor. We were unable to drive the scooter into the bedroom to charge it so I at 82 years of age had to manhandle it in and out each time. In addition we had to drive outside in the cold and wet weather to get to the restaurant whereas able bodied people were protected from the weather. The bedroom was extremely noisy all night and it is unpleasant listening to other guests using their toilet in the middle of the night and floors creaking.as people moved about. This meant we went with very little sleep for 4 nights. The road from our block was riddled with potholes making riding a scooter every uncomfortable and dangerous due to passing cars. On the plus side food was plentiful and well cooked. Service was too swift and often they tried to remove plates before we had finished eating. Room cleaning was poor and one day we returned to find our soap and dish on the floor and a drinking glass also on the floor. The beds were poorly made and sheets not tucked in. We complained and the hotel admitted that it was not acceptable. Room heating was by an electric heater which made the air very dry. There was no heating in the corridor which made it cold. As we had to exit via an emergency exit were made to feel to feel very second class This hotel does not cater for disabled people or the elderly and so we will never stay there again. I note that this hotel does not bother to reply to our comments. I

Response from Cynthia Robertson, General Manager at Highlander Hotel

Disappointed by your comments but this yet again proves why we do not reply to all reviews. In all fairness if you were so dissatisfied I think you would have come to us during your stay so we could deal with your concerns but instead you have chosen to hide behind a keyboard when you went home.

The room was nice and clean, very large bed, decor pleasing throughout the hotel. However, we were on ground floor and the noise from above is really loud. If anyone walks across the floor or goes to toilet it’s really loud and some soundproofing is needed. The noise from above in the early hours of someone walking across the floor woke myself and my husband, it was so loud I thought the ceiling was coming down, then we could hear them talking as well. The food in the restaurant was inferior quality and obviously all bought in frozen. Husbands chips were hard and he couldn’t eat them. We don’t eat cheap frozen meals at home so not for us. Breakfast was also ghastly, one slice of very fatty and salty bacon, one cheap frozen food sausage which was gritty and not much meat quantity, if any at all, tinned mushrooms, small portion of cheap beans, a potato scone also not quality and scrambled egg like rubber, dried out and tasteless. Could not drink the horrible tea either, so thank goodness for some tea in room. My plate didn’t even merit a sausage and my husband offered his to our dog who turned his nose up at it. Meals were not cheap also, on second night there we ate at another hotel nearby where the meals were of Michelin quality compared to our hotel for only £1 more. The Balavil Hotel had beautiful quality ingredients cooked from scratch and was melt in the mouth dining. We will be staying there next time.

Not the best hotel stay but staff were very friendly & welcomed us & our dog. Rooms very basic with a radio/alarm built into the wall that would have looked dated in the 80’s. We had booked to have breakfast the 2 days we were there but only had it the first day as apart from the toast it wasn’t great. Antlers along the road is excellent for food though. It was a good base for us to get to Aviemore & was dog friendly which is what we were looking for. We had a takeaway the 2nd night at Mehmoods (only place open for food later on to takeaway) which was nice also, main thing about hotel was the friendly welcome so thank you!

Just returned from a weekend event at this hotel. The hotel is clean and comfortable and the food is plentiful and tasty. The staff are so friendly and helpful. I have dietary needs and they were catered for at every meal. I highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for good traditional Scottish hospitality.

This was my second visit and will be returning , The hotel was spotless with rooms serviced daily , the shower and toilet are modern , bed was comfy and rooms a good size with tea, coffee and biscuits .The food was delicious and the fish was a massive portion .A lot of people moaning about it being basic , if want luxury pay for it at a expensive hotel , for the price I think it was value for your money , the staff are friendly and welcoming a lovely place to stay for a wee break
