Hotel is run personally by the English-speaking Sri Lankan lady owner. Relax and unwind in a friendly, family-run small hotel with modern amenities, to the sounds of tropical birds and the Ocean. Premlanka Hotel is also an ideal base from which to tour other parts of Sri Lanka and as a base for longer stays. Set peacefully in landscaped gardens amongst coconut palms, about 400 paces from a nice, sandy beach. Five en suite twin-bedded rooms with showers, toilets, ceiling fans, electric points and private balconies. All bedrooms have twin four-poster "canopy" beds with comfortable mattresses, equipped with full mosquito nets. These high-ceilinged rooms are cooled by sea breezes. The hotel is naturally cool, helped by the attractive "indoor waterfall garden" built into the stairwell. Most bedrooms have optional air-conditioning. One bedroom has a kitchenette. We can arrange for reliable drivers to meet your flights at Colombo or the new Hambantota airport. Their routes to and from Premlanka Hotel can include stops at interesting places. We can suggest and organize a range of excursions. We are also happy to help you plan and arrange your own itinerary. Our extensive local knowledge includes fascinating places and events seldom visited by overseas tourists.

I totally agree with the previous review. I too was recommended by friends and it was the perfect place to stay. Prem can't do enough for you, I was on my own and she looked after me very well. The house is huge, with large bedrooms and reception rooms. Most rooms have a balcony, and there is lots of space to lounge around and relax. The beaches are lovely and it is a short walk to the village. Don't miss the saturday market. Thoroughly recommended.

A friend recommended Prem Lanka to us. We stayed for 5 nights and it was like home from home, as Prem looked after us with her lovely home cooked meals. The house in airy and clean and in a very quiet location. Dickwella beach is 2 minutes to the right, but the best beach (5-10 mins to the left) is a small cove, totally unspoilt and empty. We had the beach to ourselves except for a couple of locals marvelling at the foreigners and wanting an English lesson. Tourism hasn't really reached this part of Sri Lanka yet, which is part of the appeal! Prem can arrange transport and trips to anywhere. In fact she can't do enough for her guests. She is a lovely lady and if you want the experience of a Sri Lankan homestay with the privacy of a small hotel, I recommend a stay at Prem Lanka.

We feel so lucky that a friend of ours told us about Prem and her wonderful, clean, and airy home. We were greeted with a big smile and flowers from her garden, and no sooner had we put down our bags than a tray of treats and freshly squeezed juice arrived to refresh us. Prem's home is just a few minutes' walk away from a totally unspoilt beach, and ten minutes' walk - down a quiet country lane - from another beautiful and utterly picturesque bay. We swam in both, joined by just a handful of tourists and locals, and loved the clear water and the perfect white sand. We then returned for the most delicious and lovingly prepared meal we have had during our stay in Sri Lanka, made by Prem and her sister using ingredients from the garden. We don't really understand the previous review - it looks like she made her mind up before arriving here... We saw no bed bugs, and of course it's hot in Sri Lanka in April but nothing that a fan and a cool shower can't relieve! The balcony to our room overlooked a beautiful garden full of birdsong, and you can see the sea through the trees. Prem had a visitors' book which is packed full of happy reviews and thanks. So thank you Prem for a wonderful stay and for making us feel so welcome. We wish we had booked for longer, and will recommend you to all our friends and family. Sam and Loesje

Had to go there against my wish, but already did not like the pictures! It is not overlooking the sea, but up the road from a bay which is far from being the nicest in Sri Lanka. There is no view over the sea from the house & certainly no breeze coming from it to cool you down. No hot water, no air conditioning. The fan is not strong enough to cool the rooms down, above the mosquito nets. We could not sleep at all. There were mosquitoes, but even worse, the beds were infested with BEDBUGS! Keep away!!!!

Response from Richard S, Manager at Premlanka Hotel
Responded 7 Apr 2013
We welcome feedback from guests and take all comments seriously. We are very sorry to read this review from someone who stayed only a single night. However, this review is very different to all other feedback from guests before and since, including guests who have stayed in exactly the same rooms, and who have later sent their friends to stay at our hotel. At the time, the reviewer's husband's only comment was about the heat; but Sri Lanka was then experiencing a fierce heatwave. He actually wrote a complimentary comment in our hotel's guest book. Some guests do arrive stressed. We do try to allow for this, so extended our hospitality to this reviewer and her family, rather than sending them away. Normally guests find our friendly family-run hotel pleasant, peaceful and relaxing; normally their tensions fade away, soothed by the tranquil setting and by the sounds of tropical birds and the ocean. It is very hard to guess quite what triggered this angry review; but it really does not seem to be related to our hotel. However we have modified the hotel's website to make the descriptions even more clear. Our hotel is run personally by the English-Speaking Sri Lankan lady owner. The hotel is treasured by guests who want to *experience* Sri Lanka, rather than to remain isolated in a 5-Star bubble. Inevitably, some people are happier staying in standardized 5-Star resorts. But from all the types of hotels available, and despite a life working in expensive 5-Star hotels, this reviewer and her family did choose to book with us. On arrival they did inspect the rooms, approved them, and chose to stay rather than to move elsewhere: Trusting their good faith, we had demanded no money in advance, so if they had found the rooms unsuitable they could simply have cancelled the booking, got back into their van and gone to another hotel. There have been no other reports of bed-bugs in our hotel; Guests staying in exactly the same rooms before and after this reviewer have not reported any problems. Our beds do have very comfortable interior-sprung mattresses, rather than the cheaper – hotter - foam type generally provided elsewhere. We have made a careful inspection, but found absolutely no problems. Naturally we will continue taking precautions in case any insects arrive with our guests.

We stayed with Prem over Christmas 2012 and had a great time. This is a place for quiet and relaxation, deserted beaches and good food. We enjoyed watching monkeys, peacocks and all manner of colourful birds from our balcony. Prem is a smiling, welcoming host and we enjoyed her home cooked breakfasts and, on several days, dinners in the evening too. The main beach at Dikwella is long and unspoilt curving around for about a mile up to the considerably more expensive (and, from what we heard, not particularly inspiring) resort at the far end. Before you reach the resort you pass one of the few other places to eat in Dikwella - the Sea Garden seafood restaurant - and the staff here are very friendly. They organised us a special meal on the beach on Christmas Day and an early morning fishing trip with the locals. Dikwella has quite a few shops within walking distance including a small branch of the chain supermarket Cargills Food City. There is also the Big Buddha nearby which is worth a look. Turn left up the hill out of the main gate and you reach a smaller secluded beach with calmer waters - we had the beach to ourselves on both visits. After a hard morning at the beach we were always greeted with home made juices or a lovely pot of tea and homemade cakes. Couldn't recommend this place more to anyone in the area. Dikwella feels like it has not yet really made it onto the tourist map so we enjoyed mixing with the friendly locals in a piece of uncommercialised Sri Lanka.

Forget the outlandishly expensive resort at the far end of Dickwella Beach, this is where the smart traveller stays when he/she comes to town. Large, spotlessly clean rooms with balconies overlooking one of the prettiest gardens on the island. Monkeys and Peacocks compete for your attention in the lush surroundings by day and when it gets dark you're treated to a dazzling display by the local fireflies. If you're looking for nightlife and high-octane thrills then head to one of the busier towns along the coast. If peace, tranquility and some of the tastiest food in Sri Lanka are more your thing then this is the place for you. Turn right when you leave the main gate and you'll be on the beach in 30 seconds. And what a beach! Half a mile of palm-fringed loveliness with barely a soul for company. Some nice snorkelling at the eastern end (watch out for those sea urchins) and much gentler surf than we'd experienced at Hikkaduwa earlier on our trip. Turn left, and after 10 minutes you come to a beach that's even better. A 'secret' cove that we had entirely to ourselves. Just stunning. Then there's the hospitality. Prem really is the perfect host and a wonderful cook - treat yourself to the full board option and you won't be disappointed. Huge breakfasts and veritable feasts in the evenings comprising delicious Sri Lankan cuisine with many of the ingredients sourced from the hotel's own large herb garden. Finding anywhere to eat out in Dickwella is quite a challenge anyway - there are a couple of seafood places on the beach that are worth checking out for lunch but as far as we could see there were no restaurants in the town itself. If, like me and the missus, you like your food spicy be sure to tell Prem on arrival otherwise she may dial down the heat on your curry - which would be a shame! I can't see a link to the hotel website here, so for more information go to premlanka.com Enjoy!

After a long flight and transfers the hotel was such a wonderful surprise. Shut away behind large gates, it was a beautiful and peaceful place. The gardens are glorious and well kept with an outside shower for those coming off the beautiful sandy beach. We were welcomed by Prem [the owner] with a bunch of flowers then shown to our room. The bedroom was large and en suit with a big balcony. From the balcony you can see the ocean peeping through the palm trees plus, peacocks, monkeys, tree squirrels and a large variety of beautiful birds. The beach is just a few minutes walk away. We had full board and many many cups of tea all served with a lovely smile from Prem or her sister Sitha. Prem grows all the veg in her garden so all food was fresh. The beds are very comfortable and large with nets over them. The high light for us, was a trip to Merissa to go whale watching and were lucky enough to see 5 blue whales. Prem arranged this for us and we got a good deal. Transport is no problem, as it can be arranged by Prem and at reasonable prices. There is a 3 wheel driver that lives opposite, who will also take you about. There is also a dedicated transport driver that is available for airport transfers and other long trips. Be warned though that you will be requested not to wear foot ware in the Hotel as the family are Buddist. K and J Palmer Oakley Hampshire
