We had spent a total of 5 nights at the Tartaruga Hotel and Beach Restaurant of which the location was central to the beach area however was set back on the coastline providing some seclusion. Milan the bar tender and the staff were fantastic and provided quality service for myself and family of which made the trip even more enjoyable. They could however improve the timeliness of Breakfast which was not provided in full until 8:30am most days.
Overall a great experience.

Although this restaurant seems to be attached to a hotel, don’t let this put you off because, in any case, it feels quite separate. Nor the way you approach it via a dimly lit path. Nor its vast menu. Once you’re settled in, it’s really rather good.
It’s actually quite large, with tables set up on a spacious deck as well as liberally across a wide expanse of beach. Sri Lankan service is not noted for its speed so we were impressed when our drinks with some nibbles chosen from the menu turned up (a) quickly, and (b) all at the same time. We needed time to scan the extensive menu before making our choices. On offer were curries, pizzas and pastas, fish and meats either oven-cooked or barbequed, vegetarian dishes, plus desserts. Two of us opted for barbequed chicken which was cooked to perfection although we reckon we each got half a bird, so probably a bit generous. Our third guest went for grilled tuna. We also ordered a couple of salads. Tons of food was delivered in reasonable time (bearing in mind the need to barbeque) and indeed it quickly became obvious that we had over-ordered, so beware of this!
Drink wise we started with shorts plus mixers then moved on to a Chilean sauvignon blanc.
Service was charming and was only let down by the time it took to get the bill. Perhaps due to our overzealous appetites and the amount of drinks we ordered, the bill was quite high for Sri Lanka – just under GBP25 a head. Not expensive for London but high for here, we thought.
Nevertheless, we have no hesitation in recommending the Tartaruga Restaurant provided you don’t go over the top!

Having visited Unawatuna two years ago (staying in the now closed Calamander) nine of us decided to visit for Christmas and New Year for two weeks. Given all the uncertainty with COVID, I contacted the hotel a few months ago who were most helpful right up to our arrival, even providing complimentary transfer from Bandarnaike Airport and also arranging for PCR tests at the reception before departure. I have to compliment Cristo who managed the reception who before during and after our stay was hugely helpful and professional.

This is what I call a "boutique" hotel with about 20 rooms and we didnt really have too high expectations. The rooms were fab - great size, view, facilities and showers whilst spotless. The restaurant was outdoors and I can honestly say was probably the best place to eat in town for lunch or dinner. It had its own following just for meals with many people calling in during the day just for food.

This hotel has a small pool which was great to cool down at but also has numerous sun beds and tables with the most space of all on Unawatuna Beach.

The jewel in the crown for us was a waiter called Dilshan (Dill). He can give lessons on customer service and nothing was too much trouble. A fab young man and character that deserves to rise through the ranks and made everyones' stay fun and relaxed.

We left there to stay in a fancy five star in Colombo, each one of us wishing we were still at the Tartaruga.

We travel the world and stay in some of the finest hotels. If you want to stay somewhere different with incredible food and hospitality, it gets five stars from me!

The service both within the hotel and the restaurant was terrible. We had to go look for a member of the staff whenever we needed something - and they were not that easy to find. We asked the reception for another bed sheet and a blanket, as well as towels (since there were non in the room) but it took them three days to accommodate our request due to lack of information between the shifts of staff. The pool was a joke, it’s located right by the reception and is more like a fountain than an actual swimming pool. Our room was located in the old part of the hotel right by the kitchen and it was not clean. Ants in the bathroom, and no daily cleaning. The isolation between the rooms was non existent, so you could hear every single word that the neighbors were saying. I do not recommend this place. It’s substandard for the price you pay. The one good thing about this place is it’s location right on the beach and the walking distance to restaurants and activities.

Great location and 2 immaculate rooms that had sea views. Food was excellent - an array of dishes ranging from Sri Lankan/south Asian to European so to cater to all appetites. The Manager, Ajith, was very friendly and welcoming throughout our 3 day stay.

My family and I experienced a very upsetting altercation with a group of people sitting near to us during dinner one evening. I asked if they could refrain from smoking as the smoke was blowing over to our table area and I had a young child of 8 who was also eating food.

Initially they stopped but then started again and became very hostile when asked again to refrain from smoking. Although we were seated in the outside area, due to heavy rains we were moved very swiftly by staff so we were underneath a large canopy which covered all diners - cigarette smoke thus stayed underneath the canopy and affected others dining next to the smokers. I appreciate that cultural and personal differences exist but I do feel that manners and etiquette should transcend all cultures in re to smoking due to the risks from passive smoking. It is not an enjoyable experience to breathe in second hand smoke during a meal and also with a child present.

I first visited Unawatuna in my mid 20s in 1998 . The beach is beautiful which makes the hotel a perfect location. The close location to the beach however did come at a cost as on the friday night we stayed there was a beach rave/party which blared music so loud until about 3am. For those that are light sleepers like myself, I was unable to get back to sleep until it stopped. My daughter thankfully didn’t hear anything and remained asleep throughout.

On the whole a great hotel, fantastic location for the beach, really good food served as well a diverse buffet breakfast menu. May be worth while double checking before ordering food if smoking is permitted or not - for those that want to smoke and for those that prefer not eat in an environment with smokers.

We only visited via the beach to the restaurant. The menu looked horribly westernised (pizza and pasta) but the fresh fish counter was its salvation in terms of taste and value.
This is a buzzy beach so be prepared for music.

This beachside restaurant is among many others along the seafront in Unawatuna. They served a whole variety of food but the Sri Lankan rice and curry was delicious. The curry side dishes served with the main curry were excellent. The quantity of food was enormous. The service was very good and there was no time pressure when eating.

Spent 12 nights at the Tartaruga over Christmas & New Year and was delighted with our choice. From the moment we arrived the staff were so friendly & welcoming. Most of the staff have worked there for a long time which is always a good sign!
It’s location right on the beach is ideal for beach lovers and the front of the hotel is about 50 meters from the bustling street in Unawatuna.
The rooms are big, spacious and clean. Same applies to the bathrooms.
Food was wonderful too.
I would definitely return to the Tartaruga and am happy to recommend it to anyone considering staying there.
Thank you to all the staff for a wonderful stay.

This April for our holidays we really wanted to find a place by the beach with easy access to the beach. While exploring the hotels in Unawatuna, we found this gem of a hotel right by the beach. We had initially booked for 2 nights and upon checking into our room we knew we had to extend our stay by a day and ended up staying for three nights. The entire team at Tartaruga from the reception staff to the restaurant staff were amazing. I was so amazed at the way they took care of us with unparalleled hospitality. There was a nice breakfast buffet and the menu options at the restaurant was amazing. For the second day we were joined by two of my friends with their families, there were three 2 year old kids in the group and the hotel staff prepared all the baby food needed for the kids. Thank you Tartaruga for this amazing experience!!! We will return for sure next year

A very good option if you want to stay close to the beach with breakfast and sun-beds.
On one side is the Unawatuna main street and the other opens out to the beach.
Staff is very helpful and polite in their interactions with the guests, especially would like to call out manager Jagath and front office executive Kaveesha.
Breakfast offered has a decent spread including SriLankan food.
Restaurant is outdoor lined with shady trees and offers a menu with prices competitive with other options available on the beach.
Overall a very good 4 night stay at Hotel Tartaruga.

the hotel is on the beach. Get a room in the new addition. The old rooms are OK but the new addition rooms are much better.

There is a lot to do close to the hotel. I recommend you go to the hotel next to the Tartaruba for your meals. Go to the hotel on the right when facing Tartaruge and standing on the beach. There are massage places close to the place. Recommend that you go to Negombo and stay at Goldi Sands. Go to Galle and to some Safaris on the national parks.
