We spend 7 nights at King fisher in December. It's not really a hotel as there are only 4 bedrooms (although they're building an adjacement building).
The service is remarkable!, they treated us very well. Always friendly and taking care we enjoy our stay. Thanks a lot Randy and team!
The bedrooms are very spacious, clean and comfortable. The only thing to take into consideration is the hotel and places nearby are hosting parties until very late and rooms are not soundproof, so not very quiet nights.
The location is great, in front of Unawatuna beach.
Also you can enjoy dinner on the beach. Food is really delighful. There are many types of breakfast (fruit is amazing) and for dinner you can choose among a lot of fish and seafood very well cooked.
We came with our own car but only recommended for brave drivers! As the street to access the hotel is very narrow it's safer to come with tuk-tuk.
Overall we had a great experience and all of us enjoyed our stay!

Our family of 7 took 3 tuktuks from Galle to Unawatuna which took under 30 minutes and cost 2500 LKR (about £6) return each. The drivers dropped us at the Kingfisher which had been recommended by our hotel and they were happy to wait while we enjoyed lunch and absorbed the beach atmosphere. The menu and service were good and we were all happy with our choices. We used the sunloungers, walked along the beautiful sandy beach and some swam. The sea has big rolling breakers for surfers and we were happy to sit and watch. Not so happy to see the man with a snake and another with a sad little monkey on a rope. Unawatuna had lots of beach shops and looked a fun place to stay.

Seldom do we come to a beach resort and feel so welcome and comfortable as we did at Kingfisher!

Rooms are airy, terrace is large with comfy furniture (and candles!) with a nice sea view through the trees.

The service was friendly and professional all around. All staff were attentive to guests, especially Ranjit who made us feel particularly special! It is wonderful to know that there are still places where hospitality is still a priority!

Highly recommended. We will return!

Overpriced. Very little vegetarian options. Very Noisy!!!We arrived on Saturday and in the hotel they played electronic music till 6AM. Room was big and clean but there was no proper door between bathroom and the bedroom so it was lime and open space. Overall never coming back

Very nice and clean rooms and very friendly staff.
Located on the beachfront on Unawatuna beach.
The food was excellent.
Only small issue was one night the next door bar/restaurant had a party and played loud music very late.
But that's not the hotels fault.

We spent five nights here after travelling from place to place and it was one of the best decisions we made!
We booked ahead of time and were lucky to get a cancellation slot because we loved the look and feel of the hotel when we found it online.
Before I write about the hotel/room I must talk about the staff. The hotel is in the capable hands of a team of excellent, professional and friendly young men. Nothing was too much for them and they went above and beyond for us. It was an absolute pleasure to see/chat with them every day and they really made our stay.
As I mention this is a chic and fabulous 4 room beach hotel.. Situated right on the beach. The hotel has a fabulous atmosphere, the room we had was huge, immaculately clean, with huge bed and an excellent balcony with a suitably excellent view over the entire beach bay. Bathroom is modern - as previous reviewers mention there is no door to the bathroom! Not sure why as there is plenty of space for one, perhaps it adds to the zen/beach feel? Candles dotted around the room, bathroom and balcony that you can light at night. A shame that the cupboard is teeny tiny (not big enough for two!) but good there is an in-room safe.
Food is also excellent, it is one of 'the' hot restaurants to be at and we could see why - everything was delicious and at night the restaurant and hotel glimmers from all the candle light which attracts a lot of people (in addition to the restaurant reputation) - so booking a table for dinner is advised.
A couple of points to note. The hotel cannot escape the noise from the neighbouring beach bar, you will hear the thumping music from them but it finishes relatively early and didn't bother us that much, they also let off firecrackers and fireworks which was bothersome but we kind of got used to it. Also no wifi in the bedrooms which can be problematic for some but not for us.
Aside from that and in addition to all the excellent points we were actually sad to leave. We thought this place was great and it lived up to our expectations. If we find ourselves in Unawatuna again we would without hesitation stay there again.

We stayed at Kingfisher Hotel for 7 nights and loved it. Having checked out all the other beach front properties, we can say without reservation, that the Kingfisher Hotel is the most beautiful place to stay on the entire beach front. Well worth the additional $.

The rooms are gorgeous. The beds were a great design, very clever and functional. We slept so well with comfortable matress and lovely sheets. The view...oh the view. Overlooking the entire beach, from our room on the top floor it was also very private. It was easy to spend hours sitting on the balcony, just watching the ocean.

All staff were fantastic. The owner Duminda, was friendly and hospitable. And Namal, who looks after the rooms provided exceptional service and we enjoyed his artistic, origami-like bed making each day!

There was two downsides to our stay here. The first was there is no door on the bathroom/toilet. It was nearly a deal breaker for us to stay here.

The second was no wifi in our room. We were on the top floor, so difficult for the wifi signal to reach us through all the concrete. It was a bit of a hassle having to go downstairs to use the wifi. An in-room safe would also be welcomed.

We enjoyed sitting in the chillout zone under a big cabana in front of the beach. Kingfisher also has a great bar and restaurant. Sam the barman makes the best Pina Colada we've ever had.

The restaurant makes excellent breakfast (not included in the room rate) and we had many meals in the hotel as well. The restaurant staff were friendly and efficient. The food was always delicious, we highly recommend the restaurant. Between Kingfisher and nearby Hot Rock, you won't find better food in Una.

Couple of other tips during our stay:
We hired a motorbike for 500rp per day, which made getting around really easy. Although tuk-tuks are readily available. Be aware though that it is very dangerous on the road with all the crazy bus drivers, overtaking like maniac's. We nearly had numerous collisions.

If you are interested in surfing lessons, Surf n Lanka in Weligama is recommended. This guy was fantastic - really patient and know's how to teach.

Best exchange rate is Galle, behind the bus station - in a jewellry shop.

We had such a wonderful stay at the Kingfisher. We came to Unawatuna before a wedding, and stayed with the hotel with some friends. The hotel's small size made for a very personal touch, and the staff are fantastic. The rooms are immaculate and really great for couples. We had a gorgeous view over the ocean, the food was yummy, and we were lucky enough to see monkeys climbing through the trees.

We had a horrible stay at the Kingfisher Hotel recently.
The photos of the hotel all all wonderfull and it really does look very relaxing.
Thats what we expected and saved up for for a long time.
But we had reserved 12 nights there and after our first three nights with no sleep due to loud music from the parties going on on the premises and at the neighbouring property , we asked to be relieved of our contract.
There was loud music until around three in the morning.. our days were ruined since we had no proper sleep.
The personel were very empathetic and understanding , but they were not able to make any decisions regarding our problem . The owner lives in Colombo and it took an extra day and a half until we finally got in touch with her.
She would not relieve us of our contract and her only offer was another property they own called the Bamboo Garden around 800 meters away , NOT ON THE BEACH.
We were not offered any reimbursement. We did recieve a free breakfast at the Kingfisher.
I believe that there is a big difference in the prices of both hotels. We expect to be reimbursed.
The only reason we chose Unawatuna beach was because of the location and the view from the room which we did recieve , on the upper level of the hotel.
It was almost perfect if it wern´t for the saloon style swing doors to the bathroom.
But even the best room with the nicest view is no good if you can´t relax there.
The beach is nice , but there are many boats " parked" in front of the hotel and there is a constant stench of fuel. That wasnt in any of the photos either !
I would not recommend this hotel to anybody but party goers looking for a wild late night action vacation.
It´s a pity that the business owners don´t realize that they are ruining what could be a paradise.
I sincerely hope that they get their act together and change this situation before Unawatuna becomes a new version of " Sunny Beach " in Bulgaria .

I've been traveling around the world so I have many experiences to compare, but this hotel is a pure perfection. Comfortable clean rooms attached right to the beach, wonderful and caring staff always ready to help, the BEST fish restaurant i've ever eaten in, in one word: EXCELLENT.
It's a place to stay, sleep, drink & eat. The bonus is a beautiful beach and clear sea, which is made to swim and relax.
Even if you want to make a one day trip to Unawatuna, stay there on a beach (which is not that crowded as the rest) and take a lunch. You won't be disappointed.

Special thanks to Duminda, the boss, who took an amazing care of us when we arrived on a New Year's Eve, exhausted from jet lag, and he arranged another place to sleep for a night in a quiet ambience while there was a huge New Year's party on the beach. We really appreciated that gesture and it helped us to get recovered quicker and enjoy the rest of the stay in this beautiful place.
