We feel privileged to have the opportunity to shear the experience we had during our stay at Maistra for four nights on October 2021.

That super amazing spot on earth accompanied with unforgettable service and accommodation are somethings to be remembered for life time.
The place is located on a mountain facing the Aegean Sea and the sights are just beautiful from sunrise to sunset. Like a light touch of heaven when you are still alive.

The relaxed atmosphere, the beautifully manicured garden on all sides, the beautiful and super clean big rooms which are well equipped, huge double bed with super comfort mattress, fireplace, including a small kitchenette and its various generous accessories including a Nespresso machine and everything needed, allowing even long stays and special comfort.

The special attention of the owner Nikos, who built the place from its base over the last 14 years. to the smallest details is noticeable in every corner both in the rooms and in the public areas of the place. Now words can describe that… .

The homemade breakfast, made by Nikos, which is beautifully served and changed every day, is worthy of appreciation and is very tasty, when the smell of baking accompanies the dishes served with real generosity and aesthetics.

The green all around, the quiet, the views, the calm villages located in the area gives to the place a very unique atmosphere.

Nikos with his big heart and generosity, assisted us with everything he could, and did his very best to help in whatever we asked for and established a homely atmosphere throughout our stay at the place. As a guest you can feel that he does everything from the bottom of his heart.

The charming beaches are within a few minutes drive and are surrounded by great restaurants where you can have lunch or dinner. There are some very good restaurants near the Maistra and Nikos was more than happy to help us with this issue as well and his recommendations were just great.

We wholeheartedly recommend the place and are already planning our next and long vacation in Maistra.

Thank you Nikos from the bottom of our hearts for such an endearing vacation, warm and unforgettable hospitality that left a taste of more of it. Looking forward to see you and enjoy of all the Maistra has to offer, hopefully as soon as possible.

Warm Regards,

From all of us :)

If there were seven stars, this is what I would give to this boutique hotel. We read a lot of positive reviews before reserving, but when we arrived we understood that this was a special place. We stayed for three nights (not long enough). Upon arrival, we were greeted by Nicola, the owner of the hotel. He walked us through the suite, explaining how everything works. Two huge rooms, one a living room (suitable for two to sleep) and the other a beautiful bedroom. Both rooms opened up to the balcony which has a spectacular view of the bay (oh Greece!). Both rooms are air conditioned and the kitchenette has everything you need. The bathroom was lovely, fully equipped (even with a scale) and included a very modern shower/bathtub set up. Every day breakfast was a surprise. Nicola freshly prepares this delicious meal that is served on the breezy terrace where you can enjoy the view. Did I say perfect? Wonderful? The area itself is beautiful, driving along the mountain roads covered in rain forest, beautiful beaches, quaint villages. Such a pleasure. Stay as long as you can, you won’t be disappointed.

We were happily surprised by the Hotel and the location. Away from the more touristic Portaria and close to the beautiful villages on the east side of Pelion, the Hotel gives you the impression that you are sleeping exactly above the sea, the view from the room is simply amazing. The Rooms very beautiful and clean, equipped with everything you may need, a plus was the fireplace that we used every night and that they allow dogs. The breakfast also great, with different menu served every morning. The owner, very friendly and professional and you can see that he is always taking care of everything to make your stay more pleasant.
We will definitely come back!

Part of me wants to keep this hotel to myself as it was so perfect. Seven rooms on the road between Tsagkarada and Mylepotamos Beach. A little slice of heaven. Both the hotel and town are not the place to go if you are looking for lots of people and you should know you need to drive windy roads or hike to get from place to place but that’s the magic for me.

Now on to the hotel. Beautiful, spacious room with a super comfortable Cocomat mattress. Gorgeous balcony. A fireplace that would be lovely in cold weather and even a kitchenette. Don’t expect a big screen TV or USB speakers here. This place is all about nature and tranquility.

A view to die for, that made me get up every day for sunrise. Millions of stars on a clear night.

And the owner... Nikos. I truly cannot say enough about this man. He is a one-man show. Welcoming guests, giving advice on what to see and where to go and even making a beautiful different breakfast each and every day. His calico cat Betty is also the sweetest thing there is.

Thank you Nikos. We found a perfect home on the Pelion and hope to be back really soon! Sharon and Garry.

Maistra has got it all right: superb location, great amenities and truly commendable service.
The property is a little bit off the beaten track in the beautiful village of Tsagarada, built in the traditional style amidst a lovely and well-maintained garden, overlooking the sea and Mylopotamos beach. Indeed, when we first got there, we could not BELIEVE how beautiful and well looked-after everything was.
The owner, Nikos, is genuinely polite, discreet and helpful and went out of his way to make our stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible. He provided hot drinks in the evening, left logs for the fireplace in the bedroom, presented us with an amazing, home-made breakfast that was a little bit different every day and suggested very scenic routes for little drives around Pelion, as well as good places where we could dine. This is precisely the type and level of service one is looking for - we were very impressed.
The room itself was very spacious with a GREAT matress and impeccably clean and fresh-smelling white linen. There was a little kitchenette, good ventilation, heating throughout the day, a fireplace (we got a fire going on both evenings after we came back from our little excursions!) and a super bathroom with a great shower. There was also a tv, a dvd player and a stereo but - really - who wants to watch the telly while on holiday in Pelion?!?
The sitting room/dining area is also very cosy and had a fire going, while the garden was equally inviting -- we even had breakfast al fresco there on our second day as, irrespective of the fact that we stayed there in February, the sun was shining and the birds were singing (!)
(really!)
In all, this is a really lovely place and every little detail shows care and good taste. We plan to return soon and would highly recommend it.

Just back from 3 nights at the Maistra and I promised Pindaros (the manager) that I would post a review to correct the poor impression give by the last one.
The Maistra (aka Castanea Sativa) is in a lovely quiet location on the hillside with views out over the Aegean Sea. The property is built sympathetically in local stone and looks great. I think there are 6 rooms in 2 buildings and we had the small suite on the 1st floor, with a large balcony.
The room had everything we needed, including a fridge, small hot plate, dvd player, and all the usual furniture and crockery etc.
Typical Greek plumbing with the bin by the toilet but the shower was great with plenty of hot water.
Breakfast consisted of fresh bread & jams, together with some local dishes (the filo pastry with the feta and spinach in that I can't remember the name of) and some scrambled eggs etc. It was more than adequate for the two of us.
The local town (Tsagarada) was a 5 minute drive away (not walkable!) and had 4 tavernas and I'd say ~90% of the visitors we saw were Greek. Very quiet in the evenings no loud music or general entertainment and it was common to see people still turning up for dinner at 11am or later! It's very hot in July!
Easy to explore the local area with visits to the beaches at Milopotamas (10 minutes) Agios Ioannis (30 mins) and Hoerfto (45 mins) all doable, even in a gutless little Suzuki Alto, but watch out for the windy roads and the hills we hardly ever got out of 2nd gear!
Didn't go to Damouhari (15 mins away) but we were told that parts of Mamma Mia were filmed there. (Pierce Brosnan was a good Bond but he can't sing!!)
Overall this is a lovely place to stay for 3 or 4 nights if you want to sample a quiet Greek mountain holiday away from mass tourism, my only suggestion for improvement would be the addition of a small swimming pool particularly for the very hot summer months but it might not be in keeping with the rural atmosphere.
If you fancy something a little off the beaten track give it a try.

We were supposed to stay there in March 2012 but we were taken elsewhere- see pentanemi!
What happened?
When we arrived after a long trip, a lady told us to wait for the manager to come while asking to be given our rooms.( The kids were very tired). She also told us, that they were no rooms available- although we had a reservation made a long time before our trip to pilio. The manager come with a huge smile on his face, saying that Maistra or Castanea Sativa, as they call it, is not that cosy for kids and the rooms are not big enough for families. So, he said that pentanemi- suites with fireplace- was the unique hotel for us and he come with us 'till the other hotel.( We had no choice, but to follow...)
On the internet we booked for Maistra or Castanea Sativa, but we ended up staying in pentanemi with all the problems that I wrote about in my review.
So, what can I write about Maistra? The rooms ( I asked to take a look) are lovely, the reception is in a rather small room along with the fireplace and the breakfast tables... The view is wonderful but there is no parking space, as we know it! You just leave the car wherever you can...
That was the first time ever, that we booked for a hotel and we stayed in another. So, don't forget to ask again and again the same question to the manager when you choose to go... "Are you going to allow us to stay in Maistra, or... is it going to be a surprise?'
I don't have to tell you, that after all the problems in the other hotel, the manager didn't even pick up the phone once! So, I wonder, how many of you had the same experience..?

This was a wonderful spot for spending some time in the Pelion region of Greece. The hotel is on the side of a mountain in Tsagarada overlooking the Aegean Sea. This area is great for US travelers because it provides the scenery of the mountains while being close to the best beaches in Pelion. Agios Ioannis or St. John beach is only a few kilometers drive and there are several other adjacent or nearby beaches as well. Follow signs for Agios Ioannis Camping to get to St. John's and you will find Papa Nero and Plaka on either side. Papa Nero has sand but Plaka is the best with small pea gravel -- comfortable to walk on but not as messy as sand.

The Maistra is super. The rooms are large with comfortable beds, well designed bathrooms, and a small kitchenette. Lots of thought went into providing everything a guest would need from several kinds of coffee makers to even providing a drying rack, iron, and ironing board. The finer touches include things US travelers usually don't find in Europe. The yard area of the hotel was full of flowers and shrubs, had stone walkways and all kinds of sitting spaces. Even had a hammock under the trees for a lazy afternoon or evening rest. Wifi was good in all areas. We could surf while sitting down under the trees and streamed the nightly news from back home while in the room.

Breakfast was one of the high points. Nikos, the manager and host, asked where we would like to have breakfast, and served us some of the best meals ever. We sat at a table under the trees and overlooking the sea, with a cool breeze wafting up the mountain and keeping us cool. A few minutes after we arrived at the table, Nikos would come out carrying a large tray, spread a white table cloth, and serve all sorts of delicious treats. We had five nights there and the menu was different each morning. Always fresh squeezed orange juice, great coffee, and special items ranging from omelets and cheese pie, to yogurt presented in little bowls made from half orange peels after squeezing the juice. I think Nikos said his first job was at the age of thirteen helping in a restaurant and he is a great cook as well as super host. He has good English, is very helpful wth anything needed, and assures his guests have a restful and comfortable stay.

The Tsagarada area is full of hiking trails and mountain village areas. Roads are winding but Google Maps will guide you accurately. Don't miss the old tree, one of the oldest in Europe, and the nearby church and garden spaces. Lots of mountain streams and forest areas add to the scenery. There are several good restaurants close by and a bakery with fresh goods as well as soft drinks and ice cream. Some things are within walking distance to the hotel, but plan to travel by car and then walk. Parking at the hotel worked great and always provided us a space. The driveway was a little steep, but what do you expect when you are on the side of a mountain.

Highly recommended -- not to be missed!
