#2 of 3 guest houses in Valencia de Alcantara

Value
Casa Salto del Caballo is situated in the small village of La Fontañera, just a few kilometres from Valencia de Alcántara. It is the last house in Spain, located directly on the border to Portugal. You can literally come in from the Spanish side and walk out through the other doors onto the magnificent São Mamede Natural Park in Portugal. From here you can enjoy stunning views towards the Natural Park Serra de São Mamede and the Castle of Marvão in the Alto Alentejo of Portugal. The buildings date back to the late 19th century, and the location is historically significant. The strategic position of the house has lent it a past always connected to the smuggling trade between Portugal and Spain. Up until 1992, when the borders opened, mainly coffee and leather boots, but also bread, garlic or whatever else was wanted on the other side was smuggled. As the front entrance is in Spain and the backdoor opens onto Portugal, it was a “casa de la duda” – a house in no-man’s land.

Casa Salto del Caballo is a unique place to stay and it combines different kinds of experiences, featuring many comfortable details. This property might be the best one can find in the whole area, being as close to Marvão, a must-visit in Alentejo-Portugal, as to Valencia de Alcántara, a lovely small town to discover near the Spanish border. The property is very charming and has a very nice garden and pool. The owner, Tamara, which lives in one of the houses of the property, is always happy to help the guests when needed, although respecting their privacy. Tamara is also a great cook and if you are lucky enough she might well be able to prepare something special upon request (including nice cocktails, which will make you want to live at this property for a longer period than just a few days... I don't like to use expression "hidden gem", but it is what this is, no more, no less. Everything perfectly tidy and clean, comfortable bed, and very well located: you might want to explore the surroundings by car or by foot and enjoy many different experiences using this accommodation as your base. Highly recommended!

Wonderful find - booked after reading an article in The Guardian. Fabulous little guest house in the heart of the Portuguese/Spanish countryside surrounded by dozens of lovely walks and some interesting hilltop villages to explore. Tamara, our host, couldnt have been more friendly and helpful and by the time we left, it felt like home! Two apartments, both very well equipped and incredibly cosy, with the benefit of a comfortable courtyard garden with plunge pool to relax by. This place couldnt have been more perfect.

This beautiful house tucked away in a small village was just perfect for our weekend escape from Madrid. The house was beautifully decorated comfortable and with a view to the mountains. Eva was a great hostess and really made us feel right at home. I loved the view of the Marvao castle from the window.

it is all very beautiful and magical here - a quality which cannot be described. You have to live it and breathe it, let the sun bake into you. The skies and the lands are so enormous, and the detail so precise and exquisite that wherever you are you are isolated into a glowing world between the macro and the micro, where everything is sidewise under you and over you, and the clocks stopped long ago. Ansel Adams from A Letter to Alfred Stieglitz from Abiquiu, New Mexico., September 21, 1937 Your host Eva is the best, always available but never intrusive. A place and time that is hard to find in the busy rush if today's life.

Fantastic casa right on the boarder of Spain and Portugal. If you are looking for tranquillity in a remote rural setting with great walks, then this is your place. Treks in the sunshine by day and barbecue in the gardens by night. Room was very clean and comfortable, we went in May, so it was cool enough to light a fire in our apartment at night. Owners are lovely and very helpful, as was Fiona who was looking after the property when we visited. They recommend loads of walks and trips to various castelos in the area. Stress free, relaxing time and the only place I have been too where you can swim from Spain to portugal!

This gem offers accommodation full of character set in uncommercial surroundings. Built on the border of two time zones with a history of smuggling across the borders, this place is unique! The owner is very friendly and a superb host. This is a great getaway venue to explore both Spain and Portugal.

You couldn't ask for a more stunning or tranquil place to spend a holiday. The casa is located at the end of a quaint little village, and at the end of Spain/beginning of Portugal. The house is lovely and the gardens are bursting with colour. Eva is a lovely host and will cater to your every wish. I was really happy to find two gorgeous and friendly cats there, so you are never short of company! I would highly recommend coming to the Casa, exploring the local towns and countryside, but above all, making the most of the house, garden and pool. You'll never feel this relaxed again!

A lovely apartment in a beautiful setting right on the Spanish Portuguese border - the car was parked in Portugal and we slept in Spain. Eva, the owner was charming and really helpful, booking a wonderful river trip along the Rio Tejo which we thoroughly enjoyed in a group of 10 on board. The 3 crew were really helpful pointing out sightings of vultures and herons and telling us all about the river and surroundings. Eva also arranged for a local chef to cook a delicious dinner for us one evening with local produce and served on our terrace. The small clean pool was a must to cool down after a busy day. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and well equipped. There are lovely walks from the accommodation and we made further trips in the car to the nearby Portuguese town and castle of Marvao. I can't recommend this highly enough - a perfect break.

This beautiful Casa Rural is set right on the boarder with Portugal. We have enjoyed visiting the National Park, local Historic towns and enjoying the natural unspoilt flora and fauna. The accommodation was very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The proprietor is charming and most helpful. She is multilingual and very knowledgeable about the local area. The swimming pool is small but very refreshing on a hot day. We highly recommend this property for those seeking a peaceful holiday .

A beautiful location, 2 lovely apartments and wonderful terraces and a tiny but clean swimming pool. In a quiet hamlet in Spain but on the border of Portugal. A short drive to some fabulous villages and small towns - especially the river swimming pool at Portagem and nearby Castelo de Vide and Marvau. Lovely walks around. Really helpful and friendly owner, lots of information and comfortable accommodation in a beautifully converted old building. Highly recommended.
