What a find! This place epitomises Hukuna Matata - no worries. Great accommodation (we booked two bed villa with pool right on the beach), stunning location (away from main tourist area but all within easy taxi ride), great food, fabulous cocktails, beer and freshly squeezed fruit juices (thanks Hassa!) and a family of staff, led by the charming and charismatic Ally, who could not make you feel more at home and where absolutely nothing is not too much bother - including installing a brand new AC unit as ours wasn’t working so well! Good snorkelling off the main beach (be sure to explore under the nearby jetty - some of the best we did, even compared to the main excursions) and great snorkelling just a 1.5km walk (or short speedboat ride) at the well known Blue Lagoon. Top recommendations include chilling out at Barista Zanzibar at kite surf central Paje (10mins in taxi), lunch at The Rock (pricey but good), the magical Maalum Caves (so good the kids wanted to go multiple times) and just relaxing and listening to the waves and wind in the palm fronds… Christmas in paradise - hard to beat!

We had a truly amazing 8 nights in The Sands Resort, following a week in Nairobi and on safari. We arrived late at night and were immediately welcomed with a flannel and cool drink. We stayed in Villa 121, which is a beautiful, large, bright, clean villa directly on the beach. The bedroom, terrace and living room all have a wonderful sea view. There was a large bathroom with powerful showers indoors and outdoors! In addition to this, there are shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotions available in room and replenished daily. The room was cleaned in the morning while we were at breakfast, and freshened up in the evening with turn down service while we were at dinner. There were ample beach chairs or cabanas for all guests, with beach towels changed daily. There is also a good sized (warm) swimming pool for a little exercise in the afternoons. We ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant. All meals were excellently prepared, varied and delicious. There was a nice mix between buffet/barbeque/a la carte, so it never felt repetitive or boring. We had lunch and cocktails from the beach bar, which was also excellent. Aside from all of these wonderful features, the staff at The Sands are what really sets it apart from any other resort. I could not single out just one person, because they are all truly fantastic and a credit to themselves and the resort. We hope to return some day.

From the moment we arrived we felt welcome and taken care of. All the staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. The room (it’s not a room it’s basically an entire house) was super clean and offered all the amenities you need. The complex is very clean and the gardeners do an amazing job.

The beach is directly accessible from the hotel and at the same level (no stairs to access). Many options available to enjoy the views to the beautiful ocean. Tides are strong here so don’t expect to be able to swim in the ocean all day but you have a wonderful pool as alternative.

We booked half board and the food was very good. Since there were only a few rooms occupied, the restaurant offered a la carte breakfast and dinner with a wast choice of dishes. The food was excellent and the service incredibly attentive and friendly.

Wifi was available everywhere in the hotel and with excellent connection. If you are an addict to social media and need to upload every step you make instead of enjoying the real life then maybe the connection is not fast enough but for the use we give it (WhatsApp and eMail) it was more than perfect.

A big thank you to all the staff for making our stay a very memorable one.

I returned to Sands after it was closed due to Covid. The staff could not be more welcoming. There service and attention to guests was as good as always. The post covid 19 action plan was operating, with room sanitisation, and personal hand sanitising supplied in the rooms. Food was excellent, although still limited due to social distancing. The buffet was not operating, but the restaurant operating as "al-a-carte". Quality of food still very good, and good size dishes.
Highly recommended.
I will return.

The Sands Beach Resort is a relaxing, safe and peacefully property that is situated with magnificent views of the Indian Ocean. This resort has beautifully maintained gardens and access to a white sand beach which you can walk on for kilometers. We enjoyed the use of water shoes provided by the resort to explore the ocean floor while the tide was out. At high tide it is safe to play in the warm ocean with very little undertow. The villas are large, clean and have very comfortable couches and beds. We had a villa with a private pool to use which was handy, clean and warm. The main pool is good for all ages to enjoy. The friendly staff, drivers and food were outstanding, going above and beyond to make your stay an exceptional experience. Thank you for an amazing vacation!

We had a great stay and we would definitely recommend it (and hopefully go back there ourselves!). I confess: the 100m of unpaved bumpy road just in front of the gate made me wander whether the hotel would really deliver what it promised, however once inside the premises I definitely had no doubt. It’s a wonderful boutique hotel, with beautiful rooms, white sandy beach in front, a quite large pool for proper swimming and lovely atmosphere. Not to mention the food: different dishes freshly cooked every evening.
It’s one and a half hours by taxi from stone town (as well as the airport) and the transfer is quite pricey, on the other hand the location is perfect for beach holidays, out of the traffic and crowds.
The staff was friendly and helpful, even when I was a bit of a princess and I asked to have my pillow changed with a lower one.
I absolutely loved my stay.

Amazing resort where there are detached villas, 4 with private pool, family and then divided into two rooms. villa with pool has 200m2, 2 separate bedrooms, huge living room connected to the kitchen, terrace and 3 toilets, 2 indoor showers and 2 outdoor showers. There is a beach bar where you can have lunch and a main restaurant. the whole.resort is covered by wifi, but it is weaker (rather a problem of Zanzibar). the food was amazing, even as part of full board you order from a card that changes every night. in the resort it is possible to order massages directly at the private beach, where sunbeds and beds are also prepared for guests. very quiet resort with very nice staff, especially Ali.

We stayed at this resort for a week after our safari. The villas are beautiful, spacious and well looked after. We had the 2 bedroom villa with a private pool. The property has beautiful grounds. I was surprised to learn that the resort was at capacity when we were there. It did not feel at all crowded. The beach is beautiful but beware of sea urchins if going in the water. I appreciated that the sun beds and parasols are set a way back from the beach so one has a good view of the ocean but there is no disturbance from the numerous beach boys always trying to make a sale. A bit annoying if you want to be left alone to enjoy a stroll on the beach but I never felt threatened. I was up very early to see the sunrise and at this time the beach is completely free of them. The beach boys are on most, if not all beaches in Zanzibar so you will experience them in most resorts that have an accessible beach. They are not allowed on the hotels private grounds. This resort has a nice beach bar with friendly staff. The drinks and snack prices are very reasonably priced. We stayed here on half board, the food was buffet style with a bbq every night (very fresh fish/chicken/beef). For the cost of stay I was very happy with the selection and quality of the food. We had a live band on 2 of the evenings. The band even serenaded our little girl who was celebrating her birthday. It was a really nice experience. For me, the very best asset of the hotel is the staff who are very friendly and kind. They are genuinely happy to help and can’t do enough for you. Even the supervisor Mr Ally is very hands on and certainly leads from the front. We met the hotels general manager one of the days too and he greeted us nicely and made sure we were having a good time. It’s a really nice place. We had a small issue with one of our toilets but it was dealt with as soon as we reported it. The only small points I would probably like to see improved would be 1. To have televisions in the rooms. It didn’t bother us too much as we spent most days on the beach or on excursions but would have made it easier to entertain the kids in the evenings 2. It would be good to have WiFi in the villas as there is none at the moment, it’s a good speed in the public spaces, pool area, beach, restaurant, reception.
Overall a wonderful place, I would not hesitate to return and would recommend whole heartedly.

Everything was so well organised and the place was stunning, just like paradise, full in green, coconut trees that made a tropical environment you didn't want to miss an inch. The administration, staff and service was excellent. So welcoming, smiley, kind and patient and so fast and organized service. The chef was drawing on the plate with the food and looked so warm and friendly. BRAVO to everyone.

I had the most amazing time with my family in The Sands. The hotel is beautiful and has a wonderful tropical vibe and a beautiful tropical garden. The food was delicious and never boring, I'm glad that we could try the local specialities besides the great comfort foods. But the best things in the Sands were definitely the service and the staff. We've never been in a hotel that paid so much attention to the guests and their needs. Everyone is a professional, they're all nice and kind and they make every effort to make your vacation perfect. There was a sentence in the booklet of the room, which said "Come as a guest, leave as a friend and return as family", and that's how we really felt. We left many friends there who we miss very much. Ally was a perfect guest manager, who really wanted us to have no worries. We had a really nice conversation with Ubwa one night and he taught us a lot about Zanzibar. From the restaurant we had the sweetest welcome from Fatma, Milka and Violet, the Chef did an amazing job and always helped us with choosing, giving tips about the food. We had the best times in the Beach bar, the guys were always friendly, having fun with us, making the best drinks and cocktails for us, even special cocktails :) Cassiano, Alex, Salumu and Alfred, they had all our wishes and cared a lot about us. Unfortunately I don't remember everyone's name, because some I've met only once or twice, but without an exception everyone was amazing and wonderful, we felt the real karibu the whole time. All in all me and my family agreed that it was the best hotel we've ever been. Asante sana The Sands, we truly hope that we can come back to you guys one day.

Thanks so much for your question. From what I know I did not see any bicycles but I’m certain if you want to ride a bicycle they can make it happen. I am also not certain of the resorts nearby as I did tour excursions outside of the resort and not a lot of time spent inside the resort… But I’m sure they will work it all out for you as well.
