Me and my buddies did a spontaneous trip to Sipalay. Since it was a not so planned trip, by the time we were trying to book our lodging, all of the top recommended stays in TA were fully booked. So we decided to contact Big Bam Boo (BBB) as a last resort.

It was a blessing in disguise. Of all the resorts along Sugar beach, I think BBB had the best frontage in terms of - chilling out, having a drink and play some sports.

Everything was in order - our pick up and drop off at sipalay, the cottages, the boat ride to the shipwreck and turtle island, etc.

Staff was very attentive and all smiles. No wrong orders and well accounted for. I believe this is due to Alex, being their manager. Awesome Austrian dude that is intimidating at first but after a few chats, it's going to be all good.

You will not go wrong with this resort. I went there with no expectations but left with very good experiences.

It's just what I needed.

We have stayed for two nights in Big bamboo and were more than satisfied spending our one and only resting day during our bicycle trip here. After 160 km it was a pleasant surprise that Sweden, the brilliant manager of the resort was suddenly there on the right place to pick us up in Sipalay.
After a boatride through the magroves we arrived at dawn and had a great meal and a good night sleep in basic but adequate cottages.
The snorkeling trip to turtle island is highly recommended and offers the best snorkeling We have had in the Philipines.
The stay was allover very pleasant but the best part was the service. The entire Phillippino staff was not only very adequate but the fun they had doing there job towards us and amongst each other was very outreaching. When we said goodbye and the people said they would miss us, I was convinced that was thru and the feeling was mutual.
We visited places like the takatukalodge and Driftwood for a coffee but the atmosphere was not half as pleasant as in Big Bam Boo.

After having read the glowing reviews for this resort, we decided to try it for two nights in mid-February. While the resort itself has good facilities and great potential, the management is clueless in hospitality management. I can only assume the previous reviews were under a previous management as they mention an Australian, whom I never saw or heard mentioned when I was there.

For almost our entire stay, the resort was without any management on site at all and only two workers left to cook, clean, tend bar, manage reception. Although I applaud their efforts, this is just not enough staff. The assistant manager has zero customer service skills, zero bar tending skills, zero management skills, and is more concerned about his new nail polish than running the resort. I can only assume he is related in some way to an owner or manager or he would not still be working there.

For instance, asking for a rum and coke in any other establishment would be a two second job. Here, they disappear behind a closed door for close to five minutes, then present you with rum in a shot glass and coke in a bottle. Forget any of the other drinks, and if you want a particular liquor you need to locate it on the shelf yourself and point it out or it won't found.

Fried chicken should be a no brainer, right? Here one portion was half cooked. When presented to the assistant manager a chuckle was all we got. Then another portion still raw and the same brushoff. We decided to visit the small sari sari store behind the resort to get our food and drinks after that.

It is a shame that this nice little resort on a great, quiet beach, and with a good dive operation attached cannot find better management to get their hospitality functions up to par.

I was looking for accomodation at Sugar Beach with air con and there were limited options to choose from. My research indicated that this appeared to be one of the best options. The only better option I could find looking around was Buenaventura Lodge which was cheaper, had larger rooms provided a TV and fridge as well as breakfast included.

We choose the air con room which was called the Big Bamboo Cottage. This was their most expensive room and during peak when we travelled the rooms cost 1700Php per night excluding breakfast.

These cottages are solid concrete and situated down a path away from the beach with a balcony with table and chairs. We found the beds a little small (perhaps a double only) and quite hard and uncomfortable. We were provided with a mosquito net above the bed. Air conditioning worked well but rooms were rather basic. No tea and coffee making facilities provided but we were advised that hot water can be delivered by jug to our room.

The rooms did not contain a TV (no problem for us) but also did not provide a refrigerator which would have proved useful. The resort is happy to store items in their refrigerator. We actually bought about 8 mangoes on the way to Sipalay which they stored and sliced as required.

The staff at this resort were superb and a special mention to Joyjoy (I think thats her name) although all staff we encountered were great. She was there to make breakfast, organise transfers, cook dinner serve drinks, and the list went on. The owners are very lucky to have her managing the place as they are based abroad.

Sugar Beach is a great no frills beach destination and a great place to relax and chill out away from the crowds.

Dining options I also found basic but Takatuka was our pick along the beach.

at BBB Beach Resort, you get to choose your accommodation. They have bamboo huts with electric fan. Would be cool at night so no need for aircon rooms. And they have an in-house PADI diving instructor, Selina, from Germany!
Many thanks to Sweden for the transpo to Sugar Beach. We enjoyed the famtour. Rest assured that your resort shall be included in our offerings!

We had the misfortune of being booked into Sulu Sunset next door, wish we would have stayed at Big Bamboo instead. Staff are excellent, service was the best we had in 8 days at Sugar Beach and Punta Ballo (white beach).

They had just opened their new rooms and restaurant extension, owner was on-site at the time, very personable and gracious, management was top notch! Lots of hammocks, great boat (and safe), clean rooms, and very reasonable prices.

Thanks for making us feel welcome, unlike the resort next door!

The small resort is located at a very natural place, which you reach by a 15 minutes boat trip. The beach is great for swimming (although the sand is not white) as there are no corals but just nice sand and nothing will hurt your feet.
The huts are built in a traditional way and look really beautiful.
But the most impressing about the resort is the staff!
Beginning from the first contact by phone you feel that you are very welcome as a guest. The manager Sweden did wait for us several hours as we were arriving with delay. They are highly flexible and they really try everything to make your stay pleasant. The owner can really be proud about these people!
The food in the restaurant is very good and freshly prepared (which might need some time, but that is totally OK for the quality you get).
The prices for food and drinks are fair, I really like that they do not make use of the situation that you are reliable on the resort regarding food and drinks.
Thank you so much for everything!!!!!

Hail hail to this amazing beach resort. People, if you are looking for a very nice resort with amazing accommodation and friendly staff, I say...check this resort out! I gave them 5 star because they gave me all my expectations. When we get to Sipalay, they have their own pump boat that met us from the main land and took us back to the island. Since it's October it is not busy so it was good! We paid for a little corkage and we brought our own food but from that corkage fee, they offered free place to grill/cook and free charcoal...that's a plus! The next day we scheduled for an island hopping and it's Php250/head which is all worth it. So many words to say but just check them out! Rooms are clean overall nice resort!

Hi! Best way to go to the resort is to take a boat from Sipalay City Beach to directly Sugar Beach in front of the resort (15-20 min ride – php 400 per trip up to 6 pers). You can reach also the resort from the end of Nauhang Beach where you can take a boat to go directly to the resort (php 300 per trip up to 6 pers. during day) or just cross the river (php 20 per pers during day) and walk about 10 min along Sugar Beach till the resort. For evening/night trip additional php 100 charges for boat trips. We can arrange boat transportation in advance as per your time of arrival. Many thanks! Marie-Christine
