In a beautiful location, the owner/landlady together with the staff gave us a wonderful and, above all, welcome stay. The breakfast, for which you must place your order in advance, is deliciously fresh and is supplemented with products from the region.
If…. If you reserve, you will receive a delicious 3-course surprise dinner in the evening, prepared by the lady of the house. This is also well taken care of. There is also a lovely saltwater swimming pool and... you can use the Spa facilities.
Our room was simple but tidy and fortunately had air conditioning, which was welcome given the temperatures there. This room was put “in order” every day.
In short, highly recommended in a very quiet and certainly rustic environment

The hotel is very well kept, amazing views from the pool which has a convenient but not cheap honesty bar. Not sure if the pool was heated or it was because of the warm weather but it was a plus for the kids!
The room was very comfortable, large and perfectly cleaned. Only downside was no A/C.
Jack the owner and the lady at breakfast were very polite and professional in every interaction and kind enough to charge our EV - there is only one Tesla charger.
Breakfast had all the basics with fresh ingredients.
Hotel is very well located if you’re looking to explore the beautiful surrounding villages of Piodao, Benfeita, Coja and Fraga da Pena.

The accommodation is really in a great location! The perfect place to relax. With a beautiful swimming pool to cool off in. Ideal for visits to the waterfalls or the mountain village of Piodao. And a super nice and friendly host!

I am writing to express my extreme dissatisfaction with my recent experience at the hotel, Quinta da Palmeira Country House.
On 17/08/2023, I made a reservation for two adults and one infant for a two-nights stay. The reservation was made through Booking.com and was confirmed.
When I arrived at the hotel, I was informed by the owner that I could not be accommodated because the only room available was in the main house and that my daughter, who is one month old, would be too noisy and disturb the other guests.
I was very surprised by this response, as at the hotel page on Booking.com states that it is "family-friendly" and there is no mention of any age restrictions. Additionally, the hotels at the surrounding area were fully booked, so no other options for us with a baby.
I was very polite to the owner, but he was very rude and unhelpful. He told me that there was nothing he could do and that I should find another place to stay at 8pm.
I am very disappointed with the owner's attitude and the way I was treated. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone and I would never stay there again.
I expect with this to prevent other people from having the same unpleasant experience I had.

Response from Jack Brouns, Owner at Quinta da Palmeira - Country House Retreat & Spa
Responded 25 Aug 2023
Dear guest, We appreciate your preference and interest for Quinta da Palmeira - Country House Retreat & Spa. NOTE: the person who made this review never visited us but only made this bad review at the request of a friend or family member. We would like to explain how things really went. Below you´ll a summary of all the facts: •You called us and asked if we had a room available for a couple and a baby of 1 month. We informed you that we only had 1 room available, at the main building and this room wasn´t suitable for a couple and a baby. We don´t want to disturb any other guest staying at the main building if for example a baby is crying during the night. We have 2 rooms outside the main building to accommodate a family with a baby but both weren´t available. •Several minutes later we received a reservation from Booking.com for a couple with a baby. We called the phone number mentioned in this reservation and we asked the person who answered the phone: “didn't we talk by phone just a few minutes ago?” but you answered: “no, no, I didn´t called you, it had to be someone else!” But it was really you, so we informed you for the second time that we didn´t have any room available for a couple and a baby and it was best to cancel the booking to avoid any problems. •Surprisingly 3 hours later you arrived at our location. The reception employee informed you for the 3th time that we hadn´t any room available. Even then you said again that you didn´t knew this. The reception employee called me and I informed you by phone for the 4th time that we couldn´t accommodate your family and you. •To be of help we arranged within 30 minutes a room for you in another nearby hotel in the region. We sent all the info to Booking.com, they informed you, and they also cancelled the reservation you had with us, of course at no costs. •The next day, appeared 18 bad reviews on every social platform available, mainly on Google and Tripadvisor, all about the same topic. Childish and unfair, but you already said to us during our last phone call that you would ask ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO WRITE BAD REVIEWS ABOUT US. We have a very well decorated country house and only some rooms are equipped to receive children or babies. As informed several times by us, we didn´t had a room available for a family with a baby, but despite this information, you still decided to come. We have fulfilled our obligations like several times informing you and giving you clear explanations why we couldn´t accommodate a family and a baby in the main building during high season. We also arranged a re-location hotel for your family and you. Wondering what was your own responsibility in this matter? Our very best regards, Quinta da Palmeira.

The interior design is very luxorious and rooms are spaceious. Pool is clean and with a very nice view.
Unfortunately our perfect experience was ruined by the behaviour of the host who wasn't friendly at all and my every request received a firm "no". We felt more like a liability than welcomed guests. That was the only place in Portugal where we didn't meet a smiling face and received a warm welcome.

It is with great disappointment that I write this review, hoping that future visitors of this location will take my review under consideration.
This was by far our worst traveling experience ever (mine and my fiance's). And we never even got to see the place!
We booked a room at Qportugal through a voucher we bought from Odisseias.com. When we tried to contact the manager at the hotel to confirm our reservations he was immediately rude to us and very impatient. But we still decided to visit the hotel. On the night of our trip to the country house, we left Lisbon and after some time on the road we contacted the manager to inform him that we were on our way, but the trip would take more than expected because of a car accident on the A1 highway.
The man on the phone, who apparently is the manager, simply denied us to check-in, saying that he would not wait for us to arrive, thus losing our reservation to the hotel. When we asked for a refund he dismissed our request. When we asked for his name so we could file a complaint he just would not give it to us, saying only that he is the manager and he decides what happens at his hotel.
So, we were forced to return to Lisbon, after he simply denied to have us at thehotel, even though we paid and confirmed our reservation, and were already on our way there.
An amazing way to treat your customers, when your logo says “Friendliness and quality in all services”!!!
Please stay away!

Response from Qportugal, Owner at Quinta da Palmeira - Country House Retreat & Spa
Responded 10 Oct 2012
After a busy high season. we still decided to write a response. Normally we don´t want to defend ourselves but in this case it´s necessary to do it because the information is only partially correct. In that particular morning this guest called us and asked us to change the reservation date for the second time. We changed the reservation date already once although it was written on the voucher of Odisseias that reservations made cannot be cancelled. We created this cancellation because it was a very strong promotion. After informing the guest that it wasn´t possible to change the reservation date for the second time, the guest yet decided to visit us. They asked me until how late they could make the check-in. We informed them that this is always possible until 23.00h latest. That night at 22.55h the same guest called us and said that they were leaving now from Lisbon. We informed the guest that it wasn´t possible to make the check-in at 02.00h in the morning because it could disturb the nights´s rest of all our other clients and also taken into consideration that we are a small hotel. For the first time it was necessary to take a less favourite decision in the eyes of this guest, which we can understand, but the nights´s rest of all our already present quests was at that moment more important ! Thank you.

We were looking forward to staying in this place, inclusion in the Sawday's guide is usually a good sign and it has plenty of positive reviews. We were sufficiently impressed by these to make a significant detour on a trip between Lisbon and Porto to allow a two night stay in the hotel. We booked up at the start of May three weeks before our trip, paying in advance for our stay.
When we arrived we got a perfunctory greeting from the owner, at odds with the friendly greetings we had received at the other hotels on our trip, which were alway accompanied by the offer of refreshments. This would have been welcome after a four hour trip. He then informed us that we would have to leave the hotel the next day as he had made a mistake with the booking and there was no room available for the second night. He offered to arrange a room at a neighbouring hotel, but being in an isolated spot in Portugal, it was not of the same class or with the same facilities, so we declined.
After this somewhat disappointing start we discovered that we had to move our own luggage up several flights of stairs (the hotel is situated some height above the road), with no offer of any help.
Dinner was served promptly at eight, with polite but completely cold service. The food was fairly average European cuisine, sadly a long way from the quality portrayed in the Sawdays review. The atmosphere was not helped by the other guests breaking into an animated argument about the use of flash photography during meals, an eerie silence descended upon the whole dining room after this. We were glad to finish and return to our room.
We had a somewhat sleepless night as the temperature outside was around 30 degrees and the hotel has no air conditioning, opening all the windows to make it less stifling subjects you to a village church that has some awful electronic chime every fifteen minutes and much nighttime poultry crowing.
The next morning we were looking forward to breakfast, a highlight of our stays in other Portuguese hotels. To call the offering meagre would be implying too much generosity. Two slices of cheese and one and a half slightly dog-eared like slices of a plastic salami like substance lurked under a plastic dome for the four tables who were currently in the breakfast room to share, together with a few crumbs of breakfast cereal in a tiny tube. Thing looked up briefly when we were offered cooked eggs, we both asked for an omelette, unfortunately he didn't write this down so forgot what we had ordered. He returned with a tiny omelette (about 10cm in diameter) and what I can only describe as a scrambled egg (singular).
We beat a hasty retreat after the military exercise of hauling our luggage down all the stairs again.
At the time of writing I have yet to receive a refund for the second night, the company chosen by the owner to sell his rooms online (elvoline.com) is proving somewhat reluctant to do this. The consolation is that even had the second night been available we would still have fled after the terrible breakfast.
The only positive thing is the quality of decor in the room which was superb, but as we were in one of the suites it was somewhat puzzling why there was only one chair (take turns to sit maybe ?)
In retrospect I should have read an earlier review 'A beautiful place that has no soul', which sums this place up perfectly. I suspect Jack started out full of enthusiasm for his mid life change of career and early experiences reflected this. Now he appears to be just going through the motions of providing a service that he no longer has any appetite for.

Response from Jack B, Owner at Quinta da Palmeira - Country House Retreat & Spa
Responded 4 Jun 2017
Dear quest, We regret sincerely that your stay at Quinta da Palmeira was a disappointment for you. We take your points of attention very seriously. When we received your booking, we contacted instantly the touroperator where you made your booking but it was for them impossible to give us your contact information, otherwise we had informed you much earlier. We arranged for you in a closeby hotel to stay 1 nigth in the most luxury room we could get. At your arrival day we informed you about the overbooking (we unfortunately made this mistake for the first time since opening in 2011) and we understand that you were very disappointed. We also understand that after this beginning, everyhting came into a downward spiral. We apoligize for the inconvinience that we have created, we offered you free drinks during your stay and we helped you to get your refund back from your touroperator. They assured me this would be done. Still we hope that you will come and stay another time and hopefully you can enjoy Quinta da Palmeira like many quests do. My very best regards.

Quinta da Palmeira is cold; and I don't mean the temperature. Here we received our coldest reception during our two week stay in Portugal. The owner, Jack did not offer his name, but was ready to get down to business when we arrived; we had to ask. His wife shook our hands, but did not introduce herself. This is the only place we stayed where we were not offered port or wine on arrival, certainly not a requirement, but a nice touch you might expect from a "Romantic Boutique." Also, this was the only place where there was no offer to help with luggage, even though we had to climb several flights of stairs to reach our room.
Quinta da Palmeira served a pretty standard Portuguese breakfast, but they seemed to put out a set amount of food, and when, for instance, someone ate the last slice of cheese, no more was forthcoming. Eggs were offered; one morning my wife asked for her eggs over easy, the next day, poached. In both cases Jack seemed confused by her requests, and she finally just ordered scrambled eggs.
After a day of traveling, we frequently like a cup of coffee, or tea, or perhaps a glass of wine. Quinta da Palmeira did not seem to offer this, and we hated to ask Jack as, whenever we did ask him something, we got the impression we were interrupting and/or bothering him.
Our room was large and beautiful, but again lacking in warmth. The bathroom had hardwood floors, but no rugs. Shower gel and body lotion were available, but not shampoo. There was a nice chair in the room, but only one, so we could not sit together. The bed was comfortable for sleeping. Overall, the room was beautiful, but not comfortable. If Quinta da Palmeira had a comfortable common area where we could have sat, and read (or perhaps had a cup of tea or a glass of wine), it was not shown to us.
We ate dinner at Quinta da Palmeira the two evenings we stayed there. The food was absolutely delicious, but the atmosphere was uncomfortable and tomb-like. Even though the food was excellent, it was "European" and not at all Portuguese. The first night we ate alone, the second night there was another couple. Even with the excellent music that Jack played in the background, it was uncomfortable, and again, cold. Perhaps it might have been more comfortable if more people were dining...I don't know.
To put our stay in perspective, we had booked for three nights, and only stayed for two, even though, under the Cancellation and Change Policy, we were obligated to pay for the third night. We felt it was worth paying the 122.00 EUR for that unused third night in order to stay someplace else that was friendlier and warmer.
Physically, the place is beautiful, and sits in a beautiful spot, but that was not enough...

I had read the previous reviews but have to disagree I am afraid. The night we stayed we were with another couple and the chef was not present. I think the owners were looking after everything with no other staff members. The food was good, very expensive as was the wine. Lack of air conditioning was a big problem. Not terrible but won't be going back. There are other local hotels which offer the same for half the price and local restaurants likewise.

Superb stay, in a very friendly environment, surrounded by mountains and nature. Rooms impecable clean and large. Very nice pool and gardens. Owners are very nice and made us feel like home. Excellent gourmet dinner. Breakfast was ok, but it could be better if complemented by yahourt, cake and eggs.
