Just returned from a 5 night break for 3 adults 1 child & 1 toddler. Requested a ground floor apartment/lodge & that's exactly what we got in Red Maple block. We overlooked the childrens play area & had a beautiful view of the loch. 2 bedroom 3 bathrooms with an open plan lounge dining area & kitchen with a lovely large balcony. As a lot of reviews state the apartments are dated but we were pleasantly surprised with the condition of ours. Apart from the odd mark on the lounge carpet everything else was spotless & worked really well for us & we had taken our own sanitizing spray. We had plenty of hot water from the tank for showers & baths & had we run out one of the showers was electric. We could have done with a few extras in the kitchen ie grill pan baking tray & the most important thing the cork screw was broken - but we managed 😁 The bedding & towels were all good quality but I think we should have had a change of towels within our stay. I'm sure if we had asked we could have arranged this but think it should happen automatically. We booked a swim session but found the pool rather cold with the temperature showing less than 27° when we had read it should be 30°. The showers were closed due to covid & the changing room was cold & a little cramped & the spinner for the wet costumes was not working. The Bistro was closed & the only place to eat on the resort was the hotel restaurant but we decided against this with having a toddler with us. I've since read a review where the manager said a takeaway is available from the restaurant but we were given no information on this, in fact we received no information on anything from watersports to where to put the rubbish. We paid an extra £15 for wifi & our electric bill was £35 for our 5 night stay. The location is absolutely stunning but a little remote so make sure you stock up on supplies before you go. We had a lovely stay but have to agree with some people that say the resort could be so much better with more care & attention.

4 of us stayed here over the New Year period. Overall the stay was very pleasant, but there are a few issues which were not as expected from a MacDonalds hotel.
Yes the food was a bit on the expensive side at times, but it was let down at times by the service.
Breakfast - buffet. Poor selection of cheeses and meats in 1 cheese and ham only. The staff were busy, but there was no urgency to clear tables, even though guests were sitting in the lounge waiting for a table.
Bar staff in the hotel bar were not always efficient and one evening 3 of them were standing talking whilst guests were waiting to be served. Again, they would bring drinks to the table but not collect empty glasses left by previous guests.
The pool area got very busy at times, but wahat was really annoying was only 4 loungers in the pool area and we constantaly had the towel on sunbed scenario, meaning that other guests could not use the loungers. Also the gents showers need some attention and need to be replenished as well.
The ground floor rooms would benefit from privacy net curtains, esspecially those near public paths.
Overall, we had a very good time, but there were several minor things which had the potential to escalate into major issues.
The resort manager and his staff were very busy throughout, which is understandable over the New Year period, however, I feel now that things have settled down, he and his team need to look at every aspect of the hotel, including fixtures and fittings, decor and consider areas for improvement.
I am more than happy to speak with the resort manager and explain my reasoning behind the comments. I was in room 007, 29 Dec - 2nd Jan.

Booked my husband into the Nick Nairn cookery school so decided to make a night of it, booked into the Forest Hills hotel for an overnight, never again the room was so cold I had to wrap the bed duvet cover over me and phone reception for an extra heater. Then went to the lounge for dinner my husband ordered a Caesar salad which when arrived was chicken, lettuce and nothing more ,on querying this the waitress stated the chef does not know what's in a Caesar salad. I had the steak sandwich on brown bread came on white and stone Cold. The breakfast was good but a bit mean, one small block of butter for 2 slices of toast. Also lukewarm water to shower in the morning.Clearly taking advantage of relative isolation , prices were shocking,a can of Guinness and 175 mls ( described as a large glass, 250 ml surely) ,pof wine came to £14 so my advice take your own drink.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at Forest hills. Firstly the hotel isn’t well sign posted from the main road and the postcode is wrong on google business page. We were lost for a good half hour, in the dark. Not the best on narrow, country roads next to a Loch! The hotel is in need of some serious updating. Our family room had mould on the bathroom tiles and windows, cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. The corridors look shabby too, but the lounge and restaurant areas are lovely. The pool is very cold and the sauna & steam room are a waste of time. The changing rooms were absolutely freezing and a couple of facilities were broken. The restaurant food is incredibly expensive and there isn’t anywhere else on site to eat. We also begrudged £5 tray charge for room service, on food that was already disgustingly overpriced. My little boy has anaphylaxis to egg and we asked at breakfast if he could have the bread for toast, got no response from the restaurant manager, therefore he only had one item that was labelled with ingredients (a packet of cornflakes) and a banana. The evening staff were much better regarding his allergy and spoke with the chef directly. The location is stunning but the general feeling I got is that this hotel isn’t overly child friendly. I felt a little uncomfortable at times and I wouldn’t return.

My Wife and I visited Forest Hills for a few days in early September. This was not our first visit but it was certainly the poorest. When making the booking, at a daily room rate of £209, we were not made aware that our room would not be serviced throughout our stay. This was attributed to the Corona Virus. However, presumably it was the same housekeeping staff who prepared the room for our arrival who would have serviced it subsequently. Despite rooms not being serviced, the Hotel made no provision to leave clean towels, beveridge supplies, nor even toilet rolls outside your room unless specifically requested by the guests. Nor were we made aware that there would be no porterage (there is no lift and we were on the top floor) nor that the Bistro would be closed throughout our stay, with the pool/snooker tables also being inaccessible. In the main Hotel, no food service was available after breakfast until Dinner. This was an issue on our arrival, as we had to drive back to Aberfoyle (approx. 4 miles) to get some lunch. At Dinner, the Main Restaurant had only a choice of four or five main courses which did not change throughout our stay. The food and drink was overpriced by some 20 or 30% but was not merited. Our recommendation would be to give this Hotel a miss until the issues surrounding Corona Virus are past, as they are proving to be an an excuse for limited service, by fewer staff, at a top end price.

Hi Andrew W, I am sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay with us, we are offering a housekeeping service on request, however the majority of our guest's are choosing not to take this at present. The dinner menu does have a choice of 10 main courses- we have a whole section of beef dishes as well as a wide choice of other mains. Kind Regards Duncan Johnston Resort General Manager

Where do I even begin!!!

This was booked as a special present for my husband and I for our last night of our honey/baby moon. We booked an executive double room for the hefty price of 312 pounds for one night. When we arrived, we were greeted and sent to our room and when we walked into it, we were shocked. The bathroom was a broom cupboard with a tiny shower, the windows were smeared with fingerprints (concerning as I’m pregnant and clearly no effort has been made in cleaning the rooms to a COVID safe standard) and to top it all off, the room STANK of mould and damp.

We went downstairs and asked if we could move rooms as it was heavily disappointing considering what had been paid for the room. We got moved to another room which had a nicer bathroom, but the heating was broken and the room absolutely freezing. Just when we’d thought we’d be able to enjoy our last night, we discovered how paper thin the walls are and spent hours listening to a couple in the room next door having a blazing row and having their children banging the doors and running up and down the corridors. On reporting the second complaint of the evening to reception, we were moved yet again, this time to a “deluxe suite” which was smaller than all the other rooms we were given previously AND would have cost us £560 to stay in for one night.

We were appalled at the quality of the rooms, the cleaning, the service and the manner in which we were dealt with. Prime example, we had a cup of hot chocolate and tea on the terrace at 6pm the previous day and when we went down for breakfast, we looked out over the terrace again and were astonished to see the cups had been left all night and all morning.

Please please please don’t bother wasting your money on this hotel, it has ruined the last night of the otherwise GORGEOUS honeymoon we had.

P.s. the pool should not be open if they aren’t willing to clean the lockers/floors or put heating on. We came out of the pool and it was like an ice box, the towels were faded and worn and the whole experience was just foul.

Good riddance, will never stay in a Macdonald again.

This was a beautiful resort. Great location, scenery, staff, and room. The two bedroom suite had a large kitchen and living room that had a pull out couch. Restaurants were awesome with good food and very nice staff. I highly recommend going to the tea time and getting the triple decker platter of sandwiches and sweets. The view is of mountains and water and you can hear a babbling brook all around the property. There is a Co-op which is a small grocery store just down the road, where we bought food and drinks for the week. There are two restaurants on site, one being more formal and the other a pub type restaurant. I plan on making this a repeat hotel to stay at. The only partial complaint I will say is that the room was not cleaned in a week (said it would half way through the stay). We got low on toilet paper and called housekeeping. There was no answer so we left a message with no response (ended up having to pick up toilet paper elsewhere). It was a crazy time due to the coronavirus so I am not really upset, but think it is noteworthy. All in all this is a great resort and I look forward to coming back!

We stayed in the Ben Lomond apartments.

The entrance to the apartments was initially blocked by one of the staff who was cleaning her car. Once we got to the door it was filthy. We went into the stairwell and that had not been cleaned in some time.

Tha hand rail on the stairs was not cleaned (covid controls??)

The apartment is very old fashioned - not seen wood chip wallpaper for a while.

We reported that the toilet in the ensuite was leaking at the waste pipe. The hotel sent a handyman up who could not fix the problem but stated that he would report it to management. No one responded.

My wife and I could not use this toilet for obviouse reasons but ironically we couldn't use the shower in the main bathroom as it was heavily fouled with mould. Guess what - you guessed it no response from management.

We used the shower in the ensuite and the toilet in the main bathroom.

My wife emailed Macdonald Hotels head office who passed the info on the Forres Hills. The general manager claims to have tried to contact us three times via the apartment phone. He didn't try our mobile numbers or email address which he had.

An absolute abdication of responsibility and dereliction of duty on his part.

When we checked out a duty manager was there who knew we had a problem but wasn't accountable for dealing with our issue.

Also if you book direct watch out for them trying to scam you to pay for Wi-Fi they try to get you to stump up 15 quid when its free.

Poor senior management and total lack of customer service.

My partner and I stayed here for a couple of days at the end of January. The hotel and room were nice and the hotel location is beautiful. Staff were professional and friendly.

We had dinner included in our rate and we enjoyed the food although my partner did not like his main meal on one evening which I think was Beef Bourguigon which was a disappointment and the meat was tough, however the other meals were all lovely. One member of staff that really stood out was the waiter in the restaurant at our evening meals, he was very professional and friendly and knew how to make people feel welcomed without intruding on your space, think he was called Chenick (sp?). The breakfast was also really nice too.

What let our stay down was the fact that we had booked the hotel primarily due to its spa facilities and given the time of year, it rained for the entire stay so we had hoped to spend time each day at the spa. However, we literally spent about 10 minutes in the 'spa' and never returned. You can tell that at one time the spa had been nice, but the changing rooms and showers were covered in dirt and dust. The pool itself was nice but it was freezing cold, the jacuzzi was broken as was the shower by the pool, the steam room had no steam and the sauna despite the thermometer saying it was 80 degrees just felt luke warm, guessing the thermometer was also broken. The sauna door seemed bent so there was a huge gap which is probably why the sauna was not warm. So we just left and quickly showered and left (swimsuit dryer was also broken).

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would return if we were looking for a hotel experience only but don't book expecting any kind of spa experience

The setting for this hotel is stunning. We had a room with a balcony and a Loch view which was stunning. I always judge a room by the bathroom I find this a good guide. The bathroom was spacious and well appointed and the hot water was the best I think I have ever had in a hotel and was instantly there at any time of the day. I staying at the hotel from the 7th to 9th August 2020 when COVID 19 was still out there, the room had been sanitised! The rainfall shower head had mould on it which easily wiped off and the shower tray drain I suspect was partially blocked as the shower tray would be full to overflowing during a 'quick' freshen up shower.
Bearing in mind COVID which is a good excuse for not staffing correctly this hotel as all others had been closed for several months a skeleton staff on social distancing should have meant the maintenance could have been carried out without closing the hotel/rooms. Poor management I feel.
Which brings us to dining in simple terms DON'T. The dining room was under resourced with staff they were running between tables to try and keep pace with demand.
In the morning before arriving at the hotel I received an e-mail advising to book a table for dinner which I did. We arrived for dinner at the appointed time to be told they were very busy and if we could wait in the bar they would bring the menus so we could order. This was done the seats were semi-lounging seats, the next thing after ordering they started to lay this table in the bar which did not have dining style chairs!
After shall we say some discussion we were moved to a table for two in the dining room but no apology. The food was ok but not worth the £105.00 and it would have been a very expensive bar meal. O the second night we used the fish and chip shop in Aberfoyle and sat on our balcony eating them.
Breakfast service was equally appalling and on the second morning cold fried egg is not my idea of good service having earlier in the week attending the Inn with the purple sign and paying half the price for the hot version!!

Our apartment in Red Maple did have wifi connection and it did allow email, WhatsApp etc. It was not tested with online gaming but I doubt it’s capacity to meet the needs of teenagers. Mobile phone reception is also very poor on O2 and some other services. We have to drive into Aberfoyle (4 miles away) to receive phone messages. Enjoy the countryside and take games with you!

I found the hotel staff were very pleasant and sincerely tried to help us. Unfortunately We booked over Christmas and the hotel was at near capacity so not much they could do. Our stay was booked through RCI which limits what rooms we could stay in. We were not in the main hotel, we were in the Spruce lodge. If staying there I’d recommend the staying in the main hotel building. The 2 units we stayed in, were in the spruce lodge. Both had very old furnishings and quite dirty. We left on Christmas Day after only 4 nights of a one week booking.
