The GDM Island Hotel is listed as a 5-star luxury resort and offers numerous rooms with private pools. However, our stay was terrible, so we cannot recommend the GDM Island Hotel at all. We wanted to spend a few sunny days in the south in October 2023. We arrived at 12 noon and wanted to check-in. However, the room was not ready until 3 pm. The first room they took us to (No. 668) was located about 400 meters from the reception and restaurant. It was on the ground floor and was terribly cramped and dark. The bathroom was right next to the bed and was only separated from the room by a curtain. Upon request, they offered us an alternative room (No. 999) 500 meters away. This one was much larger but still quite dark and gloomy. Most rooms in the facility have narrow louvre windows in the bathroom that cannot be completely closed, allowing insects to enter freely. The bathroom ventilation in our room didn't work, and the air conditioning was leaking water. The bathroom sink unit had come off the wall. Plastic strips were attached along the bathtub, presumably to cover up mold. There were no power outlets in the bathroom, only one in the hallway, one on one side of the bed, and one behind a chair on the floor. The flat-screen TV was ancient and far away from 4K quality. The loungers on the terrace were covered in leaves and seeds, making them unpleasant and unusable. After two days, we were offered a room with a sea view right above the pool and evening live music, which we declined. The white loungers and daybeds around the pools were unclean and not inviting. To reach the small and narrow sandy beach surrounded by rocks, you had to cross the road. Its use was free for hotel guests, but there were no showers, and reaching the only unsanitary restroom in the pool area required a long walk through the hotel complex. In the restaurant, you had to wait to be seated by a server. The staff at the reception and in the spa were not particularly friendly. There was a small supermarket on the property, but this led some guests to drink from cans by the pool. The hotel was located in the flight path, so you could track the weekly flight schedule. The hotel's surroundings were terrible. Fortunately, we had a rental car and could explore the beautiful places on the island ourselves. We have visited many perfect holiday destinations, but we were completely disappointed by this stay.

Return visit - as nice as the hotel is, the Greek room tax is a total con - on our first visit via Tui the Hotel was a 4* rating and we paid room tax accordingly. Now the hotel rating has been made to a 5*........ it appears to charge the top rate tax of 10 euros per room / per night. ???!!!!!!!

Firstly I want to start off by saying that this is not a 5 star hotel. I say this for a multitude of reasons, however I will start off with the good points. Pros - Multiple swimming pools where there are usually sun beds free - A good variety of food at meal times with a different theme every night- Mexican, Greek, Asian, mediterranean, Italian, French etc - Great location with lots of restaurants around the hotel if you fancy eating out Now onto the bad points - The dress code- the hotel state that they have a dinner dress code where men should wear trousers. However, this is not enforced and frankly seems like a ridiculous requirement when it is 30 degrees. Yet, one morning at breakfast I felt completely targeted by one of the members of staff at the restaurant. No comments were made when entering the restaurant yet upon leaving I was pulled aside and asked to cover up for breakfast tomorrow as ‘this is a restaurant’. I instantly felt extremely embarrassed, but later I felt mostly anger as I was wearing a bikini with a kaftan over the top (the same as many other guests who were not pulled aside). I was increasingly angered throughout my stay as I noticed other guests wearing completely sheer outfits to dinner as well as one of their own staff wearing a sheer top. Further, someone was even wearing pyjamas to breakfast. Let me clarify this is not something that bothers me however, I feel that if staff are to enforce a seemingly non-existent dress code they should do this fairly and not target someone who is young and considered an easy target. - My boyfriend and I are both in our early twenties and we instantly felt that we were treated differently, with less respect than other older guests by the staff. There were limited niceties used when communicating with us, yet with other guests there were many smiles and laughs. We were never rude to staff and always smiled and communicated nicely yet this was rarely returned - We arrived at the hotel after midnight due to a late flight, we were kindly shown to our room with our cases being taken for us. When we entered our room it was boiling hot, the air-conditioning did not effectively cool down the room and we knew we would not be able to sleep here and would ruin our holiday. We returned to reception with out bags to request a room change and the demeanour of the staff instantly changed. They were cold and rude to us, with our request seeming to be extremely inconvenient for them. We were told that the air conditioning was the same in every room, we likely would have believed this if we had not read in previous reviews that staff are known to lie about this. We insisted on a room change and eventually were granted this. The porter was no longer friendly to us and did not take our bags when showing us to our new room. This is a very large hotel and we were left dragging our bags through the entire site as our room was now right at the back. The porter walked far ahead of us and didn’t even check we were following him. This instantly put a sour taste in our mouths and was not a good first impression of the hotel at all. Luckily this new room had much better air conditioning than the previous room- I would encourage anyone to insist on a change - The restaurant- staff show you to your table at meal times therefore at peak times you are sometime left queueing for a table. This is only for a few minutes yet can be frustrating. It is also worth noting that despite our half board basis we still had to pay for all drinks at dinner including water. At breakfast water and juice are included therefore I think it would be nice to provide this at dinner times to avoid unnecessary waste and feeling taken advantage of - With your stay, you are allowed one meal at the taverna. This is a set (very limited) menu that was not to our taste so we did not try this. It would be nice to have some more options - The music around the main pool was awful. As young people we thought some of the previous reviews may be overreacting but THEY ARE NOT. It is completely random music that is very difficult to block out. It is also extremely loud which ruins the relaxing vibe of the place. We preferred the relaxing pool where it was much quieter.

Lovely relaxing hotel. The interior decor is modern and well designed. The numerous pools is a bonus and we loved the main pool with the dj (it wasn’t intrusive and added a great vibe - people of all ages were enjoying it). The bali beds were great for sunbathing. The food and drinks were excellent - the main pool bar was lovely for cocktails in the evening often with music/dj playing. Lunch from the pool bar was excellent and huge portions (value for money). Breakfast was a slight let down in that is was often chaotic and too small an area (where the food is served), dishes were empty and you had to wait often. However the quality of the food and the efficiency of the staff made up for it in the main. The area was great for exploring Crete - Kato Gouves was a bit quiet and not really worth the walk so we preferred bars and restaurants on the beach front (turning left out of the hotel beach door) or straight out of the main entrance. Try Medusa and Mylos Taverna restaurants - delicious! Bus to Heraklion and Hersonissos at top of the road. Only downside was the rooms - as others have reviewed, the rooms could be more modern and need refurbishing. We couldn’t use our terrace as it was facing trees and bushes and mosquitos were rife. Would pay for an upgraded room if staying again. Overall a great stay and would recommend.

Short transfer time from Heraklion airport. First impressions on arrival, it doesn't look much from the outside, but inside the decor's modern and the landscaped grounds are pleasant. There's a few different pools, all with sunbeds, daybeds and parasols. Prime positions are bagged early, same as any other resort anywhere in the world, but we didn't have any trouble finding sunbeds even late morning. Check in was efficient. Our room ('cool room' per the website, aka seaview double) was at the end of the corridor on the second floor. Unfortunately it was extremely small and poorly designed, and did not match the photos or description given on the hotel website or the tour operator website. The bed itself takes up most of the room and they have managed, somewhat unwisely in a room as small as this, to squeeze in a desk and an armchair, leaving only just enough room to get by the bed. There is a tv - not the 32" lcd as included on the hotel's own website description, but a 20" screen tucked into the small gap between the wardrobe that was ours and the wardrobe that was next door's. We did notice that other rooms along our corridor did appear to have the full-size tv screen attached to the wall so probably could have been viewed from somewhere other than the bed, unlike ours. The desk holds the tea-making facilities and also serves as a bedside table on that side. The other side has what appears to be a lump of wood stood on its end for a bedside table. The lighting is poor. Each side of the bed has a lamp hanging above it and there are several switches on the walls that don't appear to operate anything. There is a freestanding lamp with no switch, so the only way to switch it on and off is directly via the wall socket, which is inconveniently underneath the desk, so you have to push the chair out of the way and get down underneath the desk to plug it in or unplug it, and then push the chair back again because there isn't enough room to leave it there. The only other light is in the entrance and does nothing to illuminate the rest of the room. There is a small wardrobe with 12 hangers and 2 half-width shallow drawers with a safe placed on the top, the other half of the wardrobe is taken up by the mini fridge, so can't hang a long dress. There is also another built-in unit which has no doors or openings and, other than taking up valuable space, it serves no function in our room at all because it's actually the back of the wardrobe from next door's room! That's a new one for us. There is absolutely no other storage, so our suitcases didn't even get unpacked past the few things we could hang and fit in the little drawers. Another unwelcome first for us. There's no hooks anywhere either, so although robes are supplied, there's nowhere to put them! Same for the open plan bathroom, no towel rails, no hooks, no door, and no wall - not even a glass one - between the bathroom and bedroom. The bath is of the jacuzzi variety with a hand held shower attachment and no shower door/curtain, so despite best efforts the water goes everywhere when using the shower attachment. Again, very misleading photos on the website of an over-the-bath shower attached to the wall, but that's not what you get. Literally nowhere to hang your bath/hand towels inside the bathroom, but there is a shelf and two sinks along with the little bottles of toiletries (shower gel, shampoo and body lotion supplied - no hair conditioner, so if you use it, byo or buy it in one of the local shops). The toilet is in its own cubicle across the entrance hallway and has a frosted glass door. The air conditioning was off when we arrived and took hours to cool the room on the first day, but then maintained the temperature pretty well after that. The balcony has a table and two chairs, and has a glass panel between the solid wall and metal rail so that the seaview is unhindered when you're seated. The bed is comfortable and we slept quite well during our stay. Pool towels are provided in the room and can be changed each morning. No spares and no towel exchange outside the specified times. The pools and sun terraces are clean and the poolside restaurant serves good food at lunchtime. Breakfast offered a good choice and there is plenty of seating even at busy times. The staff are constantly topping up supplies and clearing tables. The beach across the road is lovely, soft sand, shallow water and very gently shelving. Sunbeds and parasols are available on the beach and a lifeguard is on duty every day. There's also a few decent restaurants within walking distance. So to sum up, it's not a patch on other similarly rated hotels, but it's ok. Just beware your bedroom and bathroom might not be 'as described' or 'as seen' on the website.

Staff everywhere were excellent, but a big shout out to a very lovely young man Eni at the Stones bar, so polite and efficient, we thought he was the manager to be honest, obviously loves his job. We were bed & breakfast, couldn't fault the food and service every morning, hotel is based right on the beach, small very quiet road in front. Small friendly quiet village with a number of bars and restaurants, all reasonably priced with plenty of choice, The Island hotel is a very large complex, our room was right at the far end, we didn't mind as we like a walk, however if you have any motability issues request to be closer to hotel bars and restaurants, room was clean but not really 5 star, bed pretty uncomfortable, however it wasn't a huge problem and wouldn't put us off going again, we loved the place and highly recommend.

A great adults only hotel with an ideal location, close to the beach with plenty of local bars and tavernas in walking distance. The staff were friendly and attentive altho we only had breakfast at the hotel, which is fantastic with such a wide choice, as we like to explore and support the local area. The hotel grounds and 3 outside pools are lovely and kept spotless and finding sun beds were not a problem altho we were out of peak season. Our room was comfortable with a fab bed, however the bathroom is far too small with a very narrow bath and basic shower, which is such a shame as the bedroom is pretty big. Small improvements could be non smoking areas/pools, waiters visiting each pool for drink requests/scan QR codes, fresh fruit occasionally handed out by the pools along with cool towels, all which we’ve experienced at other 4*/5* hotels. Overall we would recommend a visit, however due to the above comments, a hotel has to be exceptional for us to return.

Coming home,....that's what returning to The Island Hotel is to us. That palpable feeling of utter joy as we reach the hotel, after our journey..its that "kick your shoes off' moment,...... and relax. Happy in the knowledge that you are back with much missed and loved friends, our Cretan Family. Hugs are pricelessley recieved, and given. Then it's off to our beautiful room, decked out with a trully heart warming welcome, and we feel so very very lucky. This is a magical place, so calming, chilled and spotlessly clean, where the pools sparkle and the palms sway to the rhythm of the sea. I have lost count of how many there are now! We look for the changes, that have magically happened, whilst the hotel slept through winter, notice the change to recycled paper for hotel map, some little changes, to bigger ones, but all to enhance this fabulous place. Though as I have said, many times before,it's the team who make it special,in their tireless efforts, their smiles, their thoughtfulness, and how they make you feel. As I hope they do from us too,in our joy shown in their company. From our breakfasts,to our evening meal,in The Kitchen, delicious food,as always, and so very plentiful, or a lunchtime snack at The Stone, as you shade from the midday sun,you feel spoilt for choice. Then there's the wine tasting, where a White Hare was waiting patiently, along with a new Merlot, but it's the immense knowledge and presence of little Mariana who brings it all to life, who speaks passionately about the Cretan wines and way of life, from the climate and the meaning of family, being together....to not saying goodbye. The last part resonates so much for me,as over the years the team have changed, evolved, some have come, others gone, but those who have become our friends we have not said goodbye to,and they have not us. Their smiles, and their laughter still rings in our ears,in our memories and also in time spent this year,as it will in the next. This year we became executive hobbits,(you know what im talking about, those who know us)and it was sublime, beyond dreams, though thankfully froddo didn't join me in my rain shower! It just added to how blessed the team and The Island Hotel make us feel. We thank you all, each and everyone, for the happiness you have given us. As now we take away our memories but,as ever, we leave our hearts X

We had a 9 day stay at The Island Hotel and absolutely loved everything about it. When I see some of the negative reviews I can't believe they were staying at the same hotel. When we arrived in the evening we were escorted to our room, with the staff member taking our luggage and chatting as we walked through the most beautiful gardens/resort, it took our breath away even at night time. This is much more than a 'hotel', rooms have been built in little blocks, surrounded by trees and gardens, so that you have a lot of privacy. We stayed in room 924, upstairs, surrounded by trees, so our balcony was very private - we didn't have a view, but we hadn't paid for one, and didn't expect one, and were very happy with our private space for drinks/coffee. Walking around the grounds is a delight - they are kept spotless, paths cleaned every day, not a speck of rubbish anywhere, lovely loungers to enjoy, hammocks, etc. in sun or shade. Our room was immaculate, and every day it was cleaned to the same standard as when we arrived. It was spotless and had plenty of storage, a wardrobe, coat/hat stand, drawers and we could even put the suitcases away on the top of the fridge cupboard, or bottom of the wardrobe. There was a safe, and the small fridge was adequate for what we need. I do agree, maybe take your own tea or coffee, as you just get one teabag or coffee sachet a day, per person. We also had a sofa. The open bathroom was as we expected, so no surprises there, and we just rolled down the blind if we wanted a bit more privacy. It was great to get a bottle of water every day too, and fresh towels, and the blue towels for the pool or beach are exchanged at the spa each morning. We were bed and breakfast, and the breakfast was superb - everything anyone could ever want and plenty of it, stocked up constantly by attentive staff. I don't eat gluten, but the items all indicate if gluten is included and I had no problem eating plenty. We also ate at the restaurant twice in the evening, after excursions, and it's only 20 Euro for the full buffet - which was amazing too and so much choice of every type from starters, main courses and desserts. If you buy a bottle of wine and don't finish it, you are given the cork to take it to your room and even bring it back again the next day. The view from the restaurant/outside area is just beautiful and we never tired of it through our time there. We also ate a light lunch at the Stone restaurant overlooking the largest pool - all for just a few euros. Beer is about 5euro. We loved spending time at the pools - there were always plenty of sun beds available despite the hotel being full, we had no problem finding one at any of the pools. The pools were cleaned every evening by a machine, and the sunbeds were tidied and cleaned too once the sun went down. We particularly enjoyed the 2 pools which overlook the sea, and it's possible to go out via the private door, cross the little road, and have a swim and go back, showering near the pool, to your sunbed. People commented that there's a road between the hotel and the beach, but there is no traffic on this road, as it's a no-through road. The only cars on it are people going to their apartment or hotel, an occasional coach picking up - that's it. It is more or less pedestrian and nothing at all to worry about. We crossed that road every day, many times, without ever encountering a vehicle. The evening 'entertainment' isn't anything special, although nice to sit with a drink after going out for dinner and before going back to the room. We went out to local tavernas, found some live music even late in the season and equally enjoyed the peace of the hotel grounds without loud music. We didn't use the spa or indoor pool - no need when it was so beautiful outside. We also didn't use the tennis courts or do the exercise classes, or use the gym, but they are there if people do want to be more active. Any criticism? The only one would be smoking - it is acceptable everywhere outside, and so many guests smoked, whether at breakfast, on sunbeds, or around the pools. It was quite surprising as in the UK we barely see a smoker these days. If the hotel could have some dedicated no smoking areas, especially at meals, that would be a huge improvement. Maybe also at the pools - one couple next to us on one day just smoked one after the other all day - so we moved! But this is Greece where a lot of people smoke, and the hotel has a lot of German visitors, and all seem to smoke - so I guess you just move away if it's a problem. The little shop on site is very good, and about the same price as the large supermarkets, so you didn't need to go off site for essentials, or a beer by the pool or ice cream. It's open about 10 am to 10pm, which is amazing. The staff throughout the resort were lovely, friendly, hard working, attentive - we didn't see anyone ever standing around. The lady who cleaned our room was always smiling and greeted us in English every day. The staff in the restaurant were excellent too - clearing tables quickly and efficiently. There is nothing I could take issue with. We travelled with Tui, which was seamless. We did 2 excusions, one booked with Tui into the mountains, one booked with Rossilena Tours to Spinalonga - which was just amazing, finishing with a bbq on a deserted island beach and swimming in the sea. We mostly ate at local tavernas, and enjoyed dancing in the street on Thursday night when 'the Drifters' sing at the Central Bar up the road. There's plenty on the doorstep. The Main Street is a walk along the front and then turn left - looks deserted, but once you find it there are lovely little shops, and a great jewellery shop called Anna and Mike's - no hard sell there. Unlike in other jewellery stores who try to make you buy. Anna won't! It's worth the walk. Some people comment on the planes overheard - yes they do fly over, but they fly over the entire East of the island to land at the airport - so everywhere has that. They are not a bother - you don't really nice and it definitely did not spoil our stay at all. A new airport is being built and will open in 4 years, and that'll make a difference. Don't even worry about the planes - it's not an issue. We literally can't wait to return to this gem of a hotel that gave us an exceptional 9 night holiday in such a beautiful setting. Never been anywhere as nice.

We arrived at midnight and were welcomed efficiently, but in a friendly manner, then escorted promptly to our room. Even at this time of night, we could recognise that The Island hotel has a beautiful layout and was something special. In addition, it was cleaned thoroughly every morning and never lost its appeal. Fabulous friendly and helpful staff and excellent food and drink made our stay even more enjoyable. All the positives (and the few things to watch out for) have been outlined in the previous reviews, but this was an amazing stay and we would love to return, but will leave it for a while so that we can fully appreciate its appeal when we visit it again!
