We had three perfect days in the Loire Valley with the help of Marnie and Guy. We took the TGV from Paris to Le Mans and rented a car there (seamless, so easy), and used the car to explore the area at our leisure. We stayed in the Suite Esprite de Joye, a comfortable room decorated in green and in... More

Chateau de la Barre is beautiful with its history, gardens, rooms, charm and gracious hosts. This self-owned chateau is very inviting and homey because of Count and Countess Vanssay who are very engaging and make time to spend with their guests. Marnie Vanssay is extremely knowledgeable and helpful with travel advice; not just for France but Europe as well. Guy... More

First of all, this is not a hotel so no room key. This is as it should be because you are staying in the home of Count and Countess de Vanssay. But they are so welcoming that you will be calling them Guy and Marnie. We enjoyed 3 nights in their lovely, elegant chateau. Guy gave us a tour of... More

We were so looking forward to our overnight stay at a chateau and so decided to splurge here. We had a great bottle of champagne and a amazing Chardonnay. There was no dinner here so we organised nibbles and our wine. We were given plastics cups and paper plates. We were absolutely amazed at this treatment as the accom was... More

We are sorry that your visit to the Chateau de la Barre could be a bad memory and the picnic you organized yourselves in our small dining room gave you the feeling of being underserved. French regulations stipulates: "Customers do not have the right consume food or drinks perchased outside of the hotel inside the hotel. However, some restaurants have... More

This is an unusual hotel in that it is a privately owned home. The owners, Comte and Comtesse de Vanssay, are both gracious and welcoming to their home. The breakfasts are superb , and the food is enhanced by the presence of the other guests and their company in what is a truly international experience. The Comtesses goes out of... More

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We very much enjoyed meeting you, as did our other guests, who specifically mentioned having really appreciated your company during the long breakfasts and the Grand Siècle dinner in our XVIIth century dining hall. We have noticed, this year more than ever, that most of our guests, however keen on... More

Had a perfect two days at the Chateau! The beauty and history of the 600 year old estate, along with our gracious hosts, Marnie and Guy, made our visit to Chateau de la Barre one we will cherish always. The Comte and Comtesse de Vanssay are the most delightful people and staying at their chateau was pure pleasure. My husband and I were tired after completing a five day bike trip in France, so relaxing in our spectacular room, walking through the garden with their dogs, and talking to their macaw was a most welcome form of rejuvenation. We... More

Countess Barre is a wonderful hostess and advisor on places to see and experience in the Loire Valley, France. We were welcomed into the house to stay, we werewined and dined in traditional French aristocrat manner, invited to hear the history of the Chateau and the Barre family. A wonderful stay, should have been longer than one night.

We stayed in the hotel in September 2014.We really liked it. It is old-school, has very nice rooms that breath the history of the place. We liked our hosts who were able to bring the atmosphere to its fullest impression. Overall it is really marvelous. Some downsides: old beds and showers, but both will be refurbished according to Marnie. One... More
