We went to the Barnsdale and stayed for 2 nights. We had a classic room and requested a room with step free access which we were given. The room was fine, biscuits hanging on the door??, tea and coffee tray ok but there was water left in the kettle. The room was warm but the controls of the heater seemed to be broken or else I couldn't work it out so I just turned it off. There were no instructions. The shower, even with the screen in place left water all over the floor and the shower head was so high I struggled to reach it to redirect it. I was going to use the hair conditioner but it was like rancid milk and the bottles needed a good clean. Couldn't shake the conditioner because you can't remove them from their holder. The other problem with the room was that the valance was frayed around the bottom and I caught my foot in it. If that had been my disabled husband, he would have been in trouble. This sounds like a lot of complaints but it's not. I'm just pointing out things that need attention. They did not detract from our stay.
We actually had a very nice stay. We sat in the bar for drinks and then had dinner on both nights. We didn't fancy much on the main menu (that's just us) but there was a specials list which was fine. We would have just preferred a few more vegetables on the plate with the meal and oh, you had my favourite, Bread and Butter pudding.
Breakfast had a good selection but be warned, the laminate in the room stated that breakfast was included but in fact, because we booked through Hotels.com, it wasn't. Service charged is added to everything but you can ask this to be removed. We didn't because generally the service was very good. Food was a bit slow the first night but not really a big problem.
I did point out the room problems to the receptionist and hopefully they will make the necessary adjustments to the room.
We went to the Rutland Falconry Centre which was a bit muddy and Barnsdale Gardens so we intend to return later in the year for another visit.
All in all, a good trip

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review - we do appreciate all honest feedback as we are always learning, and always striving to be better! I will pass your comments onto our General Manager to ensure these are rectified - as these aren't the standards we hold ourselves to. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay though! The Bread & Butter pudding is a firm favourite here too. We're looking forward to welcoming you back to The Barnsdale! Best, Ellie, Marketing Manager

We arrived at the Barnsdale after a long flight from New York City. We were immediately struck by the beauty of the local area especially Rutland Water. The hotel is situated in the most scenic of locations with glorious and far reaching views all around. Walking into the reception we were greeted by a lovely wood burning stove and the friendliest staff. We were shown to our rooms that were spacious and airy and beautifully decorated with good sized bathrooms. Though the hotel lacks some of the amenities of a luxury urban hotel, like room service or dedicated bellmen it makes up for this in spades with a friendly can do attitude where no request is too much trouble. One of the real highlights of our stay was the surprisingly good food. We had dinner on our first night and it was one of the best meals we have had at any hotel and we have travelled extensively. The pan seared sea bass was cooked to perfection and the mussels were plentiful and beautifully seasoned. The food arrived in a timely fashion and they even accommodated my gluten allergy by bringing me gluten free bread to mop up all the juices from the mussels. Breakfast was also very good with a well stocked buffet and a good selection of hot entrees too. All in all we had a wonderful stay and are looking forward to returning soon.

We originally booked our wedding in Cyprus we flew out there and we really didn’t feel happy or comfortable with it. We picked Normanton Church for our wedding and that just left us looking for a reception, we walked into a couple of venues and just did not get the feeling we wanted. When we got to The Barnsdale we only just walked through the reception and both said this is the one before we even saw the hotel or even the staff, that was it we booked the venue .

Connie and Bethany are two of the most lovely people we’ve ever come across, over the past year emailing them both back and forth they were always so quick to reply and nothing ever seemed to be to much trouble. They went over so much with us the small details that we didn’t even think about. And on the day of the wedding again they were both so amazing they were always around when I needed to ask them something, and once again they made it seems like a breeze the whole day was just amazing and I will forever be grateful to the both for giving me a day that I could never imagine.
As lovely as the girls were they were not the only two who made us feel so welcomed the weekend of our wedding, we had family who had travelled hours to come and stay and on arrival the receptionist was so happy and welcoming I was feeling a little nervous at this time but honestly I just relaxed ones I saw a really friendly face. We had a meal the night before and again the waitering stuff were excellent our food was really quick and gorgeous! The staff on our wedding day was brilliant having to mange with loud music and people drinking they were just always smiling asking people if they had a good time, the food came out so quickly we had 7 tables and I remember looking up from eating and everybody had their meals the food again was amazing ! Unfortunately I don’t think many people could eat the evening BBQ because the wedding breakfast was just so lovely. I can’t forget to mention the grounds of the hotel were also just so beautiful everything was just maintained to an amazing standard. An also all the cleaning staff I meet they also can not go unnoticed on how everything was clean the rooms were beautifully made, and they always said hello and opened doors. It’s just so lovely to see staff so happy to be doing what they are doing. I never write a review on trip advisor but I just think the hotel and their staff should not go unnoticed. A lot of family and friends want to come back to the hotel they do want us to through a party every year now but me and Jake Will definitely be coming back they can pay for the next party!
Thank you from
Mr & Mrs Brown

This hotel is close to getting it right, but there is a list of small things which do matter to seasoned travellers:
1. Wi-fi intermiitent in room/didn't work
2. Builders left sharp end of Stanley knife outside entrance to rooms
3. Bread was poor quality
4. Menu lacks variety, if you stay for more than a night or two; daily specials?
5. Soap etc in shower/bathroom - those refill things that seem cheap and unhygienic
6. Dog poo box needed on site for dog poo bags
7. Ran out of loo rolls, not much paper on them as they are cheap quality so had to use tissues
8. Variety of pillows needed, these were thin
9. Hair dryer cable too short to be used from plus while standing up
10. Luggage rack would be useful, we were grappling from bags on the floor of the closet
11. Hooks needed on doors
12. Handle needed for steep shower, water pressure was great
13. Dressing gowns would be nice
14. Matt for boots inside door to room would be good
15. Packet of butter on the table (all meals) are lazy
16. Cling film on morning fruit unpleasant to see on breakfast buffet - lid instead?
17. Toast racks really needed, toast came piled on plate became soggy and inedible/unpleasant

We received a warm welcome and a glass of complimentary wine on check in.
We were shown to a ground floor room with a walk-in wardrobe and bathroom.
The buildings were once a working farm with 3 ft thick walls.
The dog was catered for with bowls, toys, a dog bed and treats.
The staff were ultra friendly and efficient.

We were not quite so happy with the menu.

In terms of cleanliness it was very good in the public areas, but we did find black mould on the bathroom tiles and on the glass and frame of the secondary glazing in the bedroom.

Altogether a comfortable, relaxing stay.

Stayed overnight to break a long drive North as part of a mixed holiday/business trip. From reception onwards the hotel was excellent. Hospitable, pleasant, knowledgeable staff who had time for you. Lots of nice touches, glass of wine on arrival, good coffee and tea in room.
Comfortable well equipped room which met our request for accessiblity. Room was off a pleasant courtyard which would have been a pleasant place to sit had the weather been even half decent. Grounds are great. Looked out over a meadow with a really magnificent bull in it. Children’s play area looked robust and child proof and was getting a lot of attention from children who were part of a wedding party. Restaurant and bar were very good, suspect they are a fairly new team because the wait for drinks and food orders was a little protracted. Bar staff a little unsure of themselves but manager was in teaching mode. Food for dinner and breakfast good, well prepared and presented . Good selection from varied menu.
Wine expensive. This continued a theme as the hotel is on the pricey side. It’s very good but probably not good enough to justify the price. This needs thinking about. Hotel was full so people are prepared to pay the asking price.

Having stayed on Thursday night 3rd on our twice yearly trek to Edinburgh to see family and impressed with the level of accommodation and evening dinner, we therefore booked for last night 8th on our return home to break up our journey. We had another room and were equally satisfied, however we had an issue at dinner in so far as our main course, sirloin steak was so tough, we were unable to eat it and had to return it to the kitchen. We informed the staff we would select a different main course, not wishing to have a repeat. All was well until we told (Ben) who we assume was the restaurant manager, how disappointed we were, but was shocked at his attitude, it was apparent he was annoyed that we had returned the steaks, only to say, as they weren’t done to our liking a replacement meal was on its way and that it wasn’t an issue. He didn’t seem to realise, although it wasn’t an issue for him, it certainly was for us due to the delay in waiting for an alternative and no apology given. I also ordered a nice Red wine to have with my steak, I was not offered an alternative as we choose sea bass. As we were upset at the situation, is wasn’t till the sea bass arrived and not having the menu in front of us, we forgot to order a potato choice and had to wait again for 3-4 minutes for some to arrive. Needless to say we were not best pleased but acknowledge the reception deleted the charge for the wine and service cost, which incidentally, we had no notification that one would be made, as I didn’t recall it being noted on the menu. So sad as we thought we had found the ideal stopover.
Regards
Ian Small

Decided to come here for lunch after a day out in the Rutland area, the hotel and bar area are really well decorated throughout and had a nice cosy feel on a wet and windy day.

The food we ordered was delicious we cannot fault each course, I had the set menu and my husband chose off the main menu, the food was of high standard and was more than enough for an afternoons lunch.

The service on the whole was very polite, but sadly we had a couple of instances where we had to chase foods and drink, we waited over 45 mins for outlet started (soup and salad) we thought it was a bit odd as other people who came after us where receiving their food and we weren’t, thankfully one of the waitresses noticed and came back to apologies as the order ticket hadn’t printed, not a problem and they kindly shouted us a drink, mains came out fine and once those were done I ordered a cheese course and my husband a drink, 20 mins later and after asking two waiters about both the drink and the cheese course they finally came, again apologetically.

The staff were very polite dealing with both issues so cannot felt that it was just a shame it happened and we felt overlooked as guests, hence the 3 star review, food was delicious though and we were perhaps unlucky.

Yesterday, 19th October, we arrived at this hotel in the afternoon.
Three of my wife's school pals had arranged a reunion after 60 years.
We were greeted by a charming receptionist who offered a complimentary glass of wine.
On her instructions, we made our way to room 19 in the courtyard.
Nice room with wonderful bathroom, that was until we turned the lights on and saw streams of condensation running down the wall .
We got changed and went to reception to report our problem . The receptionist was very kind and offered another room, which we declined on the basis that we were only there for one night, and it would mean repacking our case and going out in the pouring rain to an alternative room.
Eight of us met in the restaurant for a reunion dinner.
Started orders we mixed up , the food was tasty, but little of it and one of the young waiters had an attitude problem.
The meet-up went well, and we retired.
Meeting for breakfast was a different experience, lovely waiting staff, and nice food on offer.
At checkout, we were offered a 10% discount, which we accepted .
In total, my wife and I spent around £357.
Sorry to say that the next the next reunion will not be held at The Barnsdale.

Slightly disappointing stay, having been a number of times before. It has been refurbished at the front which actually takes away some of its character. It now feels more like a conference centre than a country house hotel. That said the reception member of staff who dealt with us was friendly and helpful. The main gripe was the evening meal. While the waiter was very loudly singing the merits of the "three rosette chef" to other guests we sat at our table waiting an inordinate amount of time for our main course. We did get an apology but the experience did take a lot away from our stay. I will keep an eye on future reviews as at the moment this is no longer our go-to hotel in the area.

Dear Tour00653506983 You feedback is very disheartening as we are still working through our refurbishment program and I am sure if you were to re-visit you will notice that further works have been done since your visit and we have retained a lot of the character, where possible and brought to life so features that were not prominent prior. We are planning on a re-launch at the beginning of May, which will complete phase one of our program. We are investing significantly to enhance our offering and aesthetics to bring the estate back to life and put The Barnsdale back on the map. Works to date have received some wonderful feedback but we do appreciate that change is subjective and not to everyone's taste. I am sorry that Barnsdale wont be your go-to hotel in future. I would recommend visiting again, so you can see the changes since your last visit. Kindest regards, Warren Browning General Manager
