Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Lovely traditional 'independent' hotel close to Hitchin centre. We have used this hotel several times when visiting Hitchin. Makes a nice change from the 'sterile' chain hotels. The staff/owner are lovely, the rooms are not top class but are good enough for an overnight and the full English breakfast is just delicious. We will definitely use the Firs hotel in future when back in Hitchin.

Great value for Money. Basic but very clean and tidy room. The staff were very friendly too. The breakfast was a little on the small side but very tasty. The hotel was within walking distance from the town centre which was ideal. The place also had plenty of parking spaces so no squeezing into a little spaces. I will definitely be visiting this hotel again

A lovely friendly hotel in a great location, only a ten min walk from the town centre. The rooms are cosy and warm, the staff excellent and the English breakfast just delicious. We’ve stayed at The Firs three times now and will book again next time we are in Hitchin.

Comfortable clean rooms but breakfast was poor, seems to have been cooked earlier that morning and reheated bacon was rock hard and we had 2 requests, no mushrooms and a hard fried egg they got both wrong. Beans were ok but hard to get wrong, disappointed

Hotel was in a good position to walk into Hitchin. Hotel is very clean and rooms are spotless. There is no bar in hotel even though there is a bar area we were told that it was a mirage. Breakfast wasn’t the best. Bacon and sausage were cold and hard and scrambled egg was more like a portion of omelette. Coffee was cold also.

To clarify the bar was closed during lockdown and is now permanently closed. The space is there. I am sorry if I did not explain myself. My apologies that you were unhappy with your breakfast, we would have happily replaced your breakfast if you had spoken to a member of staff at the time. Your comments are appreciated.

This was the first time we have stayed here we booked a night stay here as we were visiting family we will most certainly book again. We stayed in room 20 which was comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was freshly cooked too. Plenty of car park spaces which was free and within walking distance to town which was perfect.

I stayed for one night when in the area for business. I travelled by train. The hotel is about 15 minutes walk from the station. This hotel is not the Ritz but it is perfectly OK. My room (9) was large and clean. The en suite was clean and the shower worked fine. For some reason the ensuite door had a closer which took a bit of getting used to. Although at the front, the road was not noisy. There was space for an easy chair which would have enhanced this large room. There was a desk which was fine to work from. Breakfast was freshly cooked, hot, and tasted fine. If you were driving, parking is free.

The Firs is a nice family-run hotel in a convenient location. Our room was clean and comfortable, had tea & coffee making facilities, loads of hot water and very generous with the big fluffy bath sheets in the bathroom. Our room faced the road and I thought that it might have been noisy, but that wasn't the case - the road isn't that busy. There was plenty of parking round the back of the hotel. The breakfast was nice, hot food served at the table and it was help yourself to cereals, fruit & toast. It is only 15 minutes or so walk along the road into the centre of Hitchin for a selection of pubs and restaurants. It made a pleasant change from the soulless chain hotels which we normally stay in.
