My husband and I stayed at this lovely pub for 2 nights as a mini holiday. We were so impressed by the effort and hardwork that Paul and Debbie (who run it) and their staff go to, to keep a safe and socially distanced establishment running 👍 the room was super clean and nothing was too much trouble. The bed was one of the comfiest we have slept in. The breakfast was amazing and that is included with your stay. A variety of cereals, juice, coffee and a choice of hot breakfast too! The pub garden is lovely to sit in and there is a superb pub menu to choose from. Perfectly located for Hastings and Rye, which we visited, the bus stop is right outside the pub! All in all a fantastic little hidden gem and will be revisiting! Well done all at The New Inn!

After walking round the really lovely (and quite ) English town on Winchelsea we decided to call in at the New Inn for some lunch.

We hadn’t booked but were immediately found a table inside and ordered lunch. They had quite a varied menu, I went for the Asian Sticky Beef Burger while my wife had the Spicy Pork and Black Bean Tacos. Both meals were really excellent, full of flavour, presented well, ample portions and to round it off, was also really good value for money All the staff we had contact with were really friendly so all in all we had a lovely lunch after wandering round a lovely town.

If we are in that area again we will definitely be going in to try something different and would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this to others.

very clean, felt very safe. distance was alway kept and lots of tables spaced out and also outside in the garden available. food was very good - we had two meals here and can say the Pie is great value for money. Also the beer garden is great and was perfect after a 3 hour walk in the area

We called in on our way back from Rye on Tuesday 6th September and they were hardly busy in the restaurant. We were given a menu and made our choice from that. Only later did I overhear another couple having the Specials Board brought to their attention. There was a duck dish on the Specials Board that my partner and I would certainly have chosen because it is not something we would ever cook at home. The prawns in my pasta dish were over cooked and chewy and my partner asked to have garlic mushrooms removed from her dish, but that meant she lost her tomatoes too because they were mixed in together and no alternative vegetable was offered. It meant her accompaniment was some rather stringy samphire. There was no tissue in the gents toilet and I brought this to the attention of a girl behind the bar but there was no prompt action, just an acknowledgement. We were offered a dessert without charge but it was, overall, a disappointing and not very welcoming experience. We had visited a few years ago for a family meal and I was impressed then. Not so now.

The pub accepted our booking for lunch on Saturday 19th June the National Gardens Open Day that advertised the pub as being available for food and refreshments. It’s the only pub in that village. The menu is very basic and we ordered Ham eggs and chips, avocado & prawn salad, vegetable tart and chips. We waited almost one hour to be served, there was no apology by anyone for our wait. Having waited so long I was told there was no avocado available replaced by bread and butter. The response from the staff at the time and the landlord subsequently has not shown any level of customer service.

We visited the pub as we were staying in the village

Having sat down inside the pub to begin with we decided to sit outside to let the children run around. We were told we needed to pay for our meal before we went outside. We subsequently paid at the bar and went outside.

After re looking at the menu again I realised we had been charged £3.90 more than we should have been. I asked the barman why this was the case and he said there was a ‘10% charge for sitting outside’. I thought to myself this is ridiculous and told him we were not told about this additional charge and had we known we would have stayed inside. The barman was reluctant to refund me the money and offered no apology for the misunderstanding. I was eventually given the my money back from another member of staff.

Later on I was rather rudely asked if I had shut the gate to the beer garden to which I said ‘yes to keep the children in’ which the two bar ladies responded saying don’t do that because ‘we don’t have long legs to open the gate with whilst carrying food’. I understood the point they were making but the way they said it was incredibly rude and failed to see why someone would want to shut it from a child safety point of view.

We were very put out by the rudeness of the staff and lack of customer service one would expect. The staff were very inexperienced in dealing with customer complaints. We will certainly not be coming back again.

Hi Sorry you felt the need to leave, this review, 1st I will apologise you was not told about a service charge that is optional and would have been on your bill, and yes we don’t run tabs in our garden as people sometimes forget to pay when leaving, as for the garden gate you closed so your children could run around, your children are your responsibility to watch and we find this increasingly frustrating when staff have there hands full of plates and someone has closed the gate as there children are running around annoying other customers whom have come out for a quiet meal in a nice peaceful setting.

Sunday roast for two today, the atmosphere is lovely in this establishment. Staff friendly and attentive, we were late in the afternoon so had missed the earlier customers, there were still a few ordering food though. Old beams and classical 1950's tea room chairs style, we settled right in. We ordered beef roast dinners, one without gravy and a bottle of Rioja which was quite reasonably priced for a restaurant. Wine was good, typical Rioja, roast dinners came out shortly afterwards, one with gravy and one without. Meat was well cooked, less rare than I'd usually have but we were late in the day. Vegetables freshly cooked and not over done, roast potatoes crispy and not hard, Yorkshire pudding crispy and light.
Puddings we're home made rhubarb crumble and a sticky toffee pudding, both very nice.
We took our time over this meal in a very relaxed atmosphere, the occasional dogs appearing at the bar (quite a few feet away) and local people politely acknowledging you if you looked over to them.
We left feeling very full and well taken care of, like leaving grandma's house after a good Sunday lunch 😊

What a great find, stayed for just one night. Lovely welcome, room was well appointed, almost a suite with full separate bathroom, high end toiletries provided. Bed lovely and comfortable a great nights sleep.
Had dinner in the bar, we choose the steak which was delicious and came with very generous salads, chips etc. Good selection of beers and wine. Breakfast was lovely such a great selection, I had smashed avocado on toast and my husband the scrambled eggs, both equally delicious. Paul and Debbie you’re doing a great job, you’re team are a credit to you and clearly love what they do. Keep up the great work!

Unfortunately we seem to have arrived when the staff were having a bad day, particularly the chef. We had a tabled booked for 7:30 and arrived early but was shown to the table and drinks order taken... this is where we experienced delays... Nearly 20 mins later we were served our drinks and the food order taken.
We were not hopeful for a speedy service...15 mins later, we overheard one of the bar staff obviously phoning the manager escalating the issues the chef was experiencing and well no customers should really have heard this. After 40 mins we got our starters and after a further 20 minute wait our mains.. I could have understood if the place was busy, but there were only 2 tables inside occupied!

Hi I’d like to apologise if you felt your experience of service was slow,. Although we only had a couple of tables occupied inside, our garden outside was extremely busy at the time you arrived, Due to having to abide by current goverment guidlines we are having to have less staff in our kitchen, and as our food is cooked fresh, this at times can take a little longer than it normally would.. After being closed for months as a buisnees and having to re open under totally new circumstances, and goverment rules, we are doing as much as we can to try to rebuild our buisness, so we do take all of our reviews very seriously. So im sorry you felt the need to write this review.

We have just spent 5 lovely days at the New Inn, which is extremely well situated in a beautiful East Sussex village. The Inn, as is the village, is full of history with charming rooms. Each bedroom offering plenty of comfort and living space, with endless complementary gifts for the bathroom and coffee station. One of the waitresses, Lorna, is also a huge asset to Debbie and Paul the managers, as she is extremely attentive and always happy and smiley. I would highly recommend a stay here as the hosts are sure to make you welcome.
