We took advantage of the NHS and key worker offer which was a night's stay in a superior room with full breakfast and a £50 voucher towards the restaurant for £130. Considering breakfast was £15 per person I thought this was a cracking deal for two. The lodge is beautiful absolutely no question and the decor, fixtures and fittings were second to none. Really smart and quirky with such class. Immaculately clean and so was our room. Lovely shower area. I can see why so many people have weddings and events/conferences here. It was very quiet and the staff were very friendly - no complaints at all. Breakfast was of good quality but we have had better (I feel shocking for saying that!) The croissants and Greek yoghurt with compote was lovely and the eating area also very, very nice indeed. Great bacon on the cooked breakfast but the sausage was just so so - it could of been a little more cooked for me. I'm not saying it was bad as it wasn't at all but we've had better full English's. All in all a beautiful place to stay - no hesitation at all in recommending this place to anyone and fully deserved all 5 stars rating.

Don't get too excited - the hotel hasn't added a spa facilities but you can enjoy sauna levels of heat from the comfort of your room.
The Fence Gate Lodge can't be faulted in terms of style and quality of fixtures and fittings however, as comfortable as the bed may be, it's not enough to ensure a great night's sleep when the temperature of your room is 25º plus. Opening the window isn't an option unless you wish to be serenaded by the traffic on the A6068, some five metres away.
We booked a superior room but, in hindsight, the classic would have offered better value for money. The rooms are described as soundproofed but, despite being unaware of noise coming from our neighbour's rooms, we were disturbed by the frequent banging of doors along our corridor which cause the wall to vibrate too.
We mentioned the heat issue at checkout and were informed that they were working to resolve this.

Room Tip: avoid rooms closest to noisy dual carriageway. Classic room far better value than superior

Although we stayed at this hotel a few months ago, I thought long and hard about putting this review on but after seeing some more recent reviews it seems like they are still failing to live up to the classification awarded to them.
Below is a the outline of what I sent to the management at the hotel although they have responded I do feel like it was begrudgingly and ultimately seemed to shift the blame to others.

We did not have breakfast as this was an extra and after paying the amount we did felt that this was a bit over the top for a cold breakfast.

Firstly, the room although clean in most places had a number of cobwebs this therefore questions the standard of cleanliness as these should be noticed and cleaned during room turn around and have quite obviously have been missed a number of times.

Also during our stay on arriving back to the hotel early Saturday evening we were unable to park, when this was bought to attention of the receptionist stating that paying almost £900 for 2 rooms and not having a place to park was unacceptable. Her response was to storm out saying she will remove her car with no apologies.

Your response to the above will be that you were busy which leads me onto the next issue we had during the early hours approx. 2:30am we were woken by slamming doors and shouting obviously there is no night porta on (your reasoning being due to COVID although over in the pub/restaurant these rules were broken numerous times so, please do not use this as an excuse !!) and the only way to contact someone is to go to reception and use the phone obviously I am uncomfortable leaving the room when you do not fully understand what is going on nor is this to be expected for a guest to deal with ? I understand that you unable to control the what other guests do but knowing that the accommodation was going to busy the professional thing to do would put staff on to cover during busier times.

If you unable to provide a service to the standard you are classified as you should not be charging a premium room rate, I understand that the last 18 months have been difficult for everyone, hence the reason for our recent stay but I feel during our stay you fell short of what is expected of accommodation of your classification.

We visited here for our 12th wedding anniversary. We paid for an upgrade to a superior room. Firstly the good bits, we felt covid safe, the bathroom was lovely, the coffee machine and toiletries were nice and the breakfast tasted good.
Secondly the negatives which unfortunately outweigh the positives. The room was small for a superior upgrade, it was on the ground floor on the main road, very noisy. It was also very hot, even though we had the heating turned off and there wasn't any air conditioning. We couldn't open the windows due to security of being on the ground floor and the noise from the bypass which was loud enough with them closed. Our bed was kind size but the mattress topper wasn't, it was not flat and rolled up so created lumps all over the bed, very uncomfortable. Neither of us slept.
We were asked to preorder breakfast the night before due to covid19 changes which we did. However, when we received our breakfast it was not correct and the waitress was also very rude, practically throwing the plates down and it was all very rushed. We were told we couldn't get our own coffee for safety, which we understood but we only got one cup each and when I asked for more, "if you want another I'll get one" was the response, it felt an inconvenience. I didn't understand why you couldn't have your own cafetiere. I didn't understand pre ordering if they didn't read what you ordered as part of the breakfast and you were given everything anyway. As part of the continental we ordered 'warm crossants' this was what we ticked and we were given one to share and it was cold. On checking out, when I was asked, "how was your stay" I mentioned the road and the noise. I was told next time, just ask to be away from the road. I'd paid for an upgrade and this wasn't the response I expected, how are you supposed to know to request that when you have never been?! Unfortunately we were really looking forward to our stay but we were very disappointed and unlikely to return 🙁

We booked to stay over night at the Lodge as we were attending a family wedding.

Upon arrival, despite having paid a deposit well in advance for two junior superior rooms, we were advised that only one of the rooms had been reserved. The receptionist advised that sh had only been there for a few days and there was no manager available at the time to assist.

Are an hour we were located a room, as booked.

As we had arrived around lunch time we asked if there was any food / drinks available only to be told that they did not serve lunch or drinks and that we would have to go to the pub across the road.

We dropped out stuff at the room. The room was clean and tidy but very dark. The dressing table was in the darkest part of the room, one bedside table and lamp were missing and the TV was hung on the wall at the side of he bed which made viewing difficult. There were several cushions on the bed which covered the bed and had to be placed on the floor.

The meal after the wedding service was ok. The staff looked very young but were polite and helpful. Bar drinks were not cheap. After the meal we then had to wait until the staff set the room up for the evening do. Again the bar was closed and we could not get any drinks = unless you travelled to the pub across the road. Other than your room there was nowhere that you could go to wait. As the weather was good people sat outside, without this option we would have been snookered!

The morning was a fiasco - despite paying £15 each for a breakfast there was NO cooked breakfast. The option was yogurt, Bran flakes corn flakes croissant ham cheese also good with toast. Nothing that children would eat. We challenged the lack of a cooked breakfast for which the staff did not appear interested in at all. Simply saying they had no staff - we had no prior warning nor any discount on checking out. It seems that there has been no cooked breakfast for quite some time, though this was never communicated to us at ANY point. Breakfast finished at 10:30am but staff cleared everything away for 10am, which meant a couple fo my relatives did not get breakfast even though they had paid.

Would I go to the venue again - NO Way.

Limited parking no enough for the number of rooms if all visitors arrived in a car.

We attended a wedding this weekend and stayed one night in a junior superior room. Unpon booking we were told that it included a full English breakfast served until 10.30am. The staff did not tell us until being seated for breakfast that it was instead a cold breakfast of yoghurt, cornflakes or toast. No gluten free options. We weren’t told upon booking, check in or on the day that they wouldn’t serve a hot breakfast (even though it’s included and stated when booking that it’ll be hot!) and left everyone sorely disappointed and refused any kind of refund for the breakfast. Some people didn’t eat. Sadly even though the sign said ‘served until 10.30am’ the staff started clearing all the food away at 9.50am. So 3-4 guests didn’t even get to eat.
The room was clean and comfortable but cleaning supplies were left along all the hallways, doors to the laundry were left open day and night with laundry left on the floors in the hallway. The staff didn’t seem to know what was going on as rooms weren’t found for bookings with confirmation emails, so guests were left in the reception with nowhere to go for an hour or so.

The wedding itself was beautiful and the waiters were extremely attentive to all guests, the food for the evening meal was lovely and we had a good time at the evening party as well. It’s just a real shame, and very disappointing at the breakfast. No childrens options if they didn’t like bran flakes or cornflakes.

The hotel is quite new and very modern, with many great features in the rooms. A coffee maker, safe and a very modern bathroom were all very much appreciated. I do think that the hotel would benefit from air conditioning, as the rooms that are overlooking the road are too noisy to have the windows open and our room did get very hot. The very comfortable beds helped us to sleep well though.

We found this hotel whilst looking for a last minute weekend away and found a competitive deal on Booking.com
Having stayed there this weekend, we honestly could not recommend this place enough. The accomodation is outstanding, the staff are so accommodating and friendly, plenty of food choices at breakfast time and very well organised.
We were initially allocated a room that looked out on the main road (room 15). However, due to the noise of the road, causing us to have a sleepless first night, we asked if we could be moved and this was accommodated with absolutely no issues at all. Both rooms were so well equipped with everything you need and the beds were so comfortable.
I would advise that if you book a stay at the hotel, then request a room away from the road.
We had dinner on both nights at The Fence Gate Inn which is just across the road from the Lodge. Absolutely amazing food and great selection of Gins!
Would definitely recommend a stay at The Fence Gate Lodge.

Positives
Beautiful hotel and rooms
Friendly staff

Negatives
Given room right on a very busy road, couldn’t open windows as it was so noisy. Room was unbearably hot asked at reception and we were given a fan which had little impact. No sleep for two nights.

One of my favourite things about going away is the breakfast! We arrived to be told there were no hot breakfasts but a continental style breakfast would be provided. As I don’t really enjoy this type of breakfast and the awful room set right on a main road, I feel a bit ripped off. Sadly, this experience means we won’t return when visiting family.
