The newly refurbished Black Horse Hotel is set in the heart of the friendly market town of Otley. Under new management from July 2014, the Black Horse is ideally placed in the heart of Wharfedale, just to the North West of Leeds and only 10 minutes from Leeds/Bradford airport. Otley is a great base from which to explore the countryside of the stunning Yorkshire Dales and the many attractions of both West and North Yorkshire, with Leeds being only a few minutes away and the beautiful Spa town of Harrogate only 12 miles away. The family friendly pub serves locally sourced food from 12pm - 9.00 Pm, the specialities being fresh made, stone baked pizzas and burgers from our local award-winning butcher. We have 9 guest rooms, with 2 being family suites each with 2 separate bedrooms. All our rooms have newly refitted en-suite facilities. The function room on the first floor can host meetings, parties and other special occasions, with capacity for up to 125 people.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Pleasant, welcoming and friendly. Comfortable rooms, clean and tidy. Staff in pub very attentive and good food. Overall a good experience that suited needs of visiting friends, in a location that’s doesn’t have many options for accommodation. Best pub in this area. Will return again for sure

We ordered 3 meals and unfortunately my wife's meal didn't go through on the machine. The waitress apologised and said the 3rd meal would come later. As a result my wife ended up eating on her own. Not a perfect evening. We explained that this wasn't right and asked to speak to the manageress. We were told later that the manageress went home without wanting to speak to us. What a great attitude. No apology, no gesture. Couldn't care less. Clearly yet another pub that will have to close it's doors with management of such poor quality. Hopefully the hotel owners will take action before it's too late.

Response from Black Horse, General Manager at The Black Horse Hotel
Responded 16 Dec 2022
Dear Sir, Whilst we usually appreciate any review and take on board all feedback, we feel that your comments are untrue and unfair. It was evident from the moment of your arrival that you were disgruntled, as demonstrated by your unpleasantness and belittling comments towards the bar staff before placing your order. The unfortunate incident did occur and the kitchen did not receive the full food order, this was promptly explained and a sincere apology was given, whereby you demanded a free meal immediately. Your meal arrived at the table in under 7 minutes whilst your table appeared to have all only just started eating. We perhaps didn’t realise the gravity of the situation for you as, in your own words, you “didn’t care about a free meal, because you have lots of money” after asking for the meal for free. For this we apologise. Whilst feeling it not appropriate to interrupt your meal, whilst all members were eating, our manager finished her shift and left you in the very capable hands of our shift supervisor. We can assure you that our experienced staff would deal with any matter in the same manner as management would.

The Black Horse is an old coaching inn, built in 1901 on the ruins of its previous namesake. The architecture is wonderful and boasts original Burmantofts tiling. Being of its time, there is no lift, so persons with mobility issues might want to bear this in mind. Fans of 'Emmerdale' might recognise it as the hotel in Hotten. MrsCapricorn and I stayed here for four nights and I can honestly say that we have rarely, if ever, enjoyed a hotel stay more. Our room was spotlessly clean and very well appointed. The bed was extremely comfortable. The bathroom had both a shower and a bathtub (always a plus with us). Food and drink in the hotel is of very high quality and there is a good range of both, except on Tuesday, when the cuisine is restricted to pies; however, these are delicious. The manager of the Black Horse is a remarkably efficient, friendly and flexible young lady who has trained and runs an excellent team, who reflect her values. They are a credit to her and she is a credit to her employers. The Black Horse is the best hotel in Otley and is an excellent base from which to explore Lower Wharfedale. If one is not staying there, it boasts a splendid bar with a wide range of food and drink. Quite simply, it is not to be missed.

50 pounds of food wasted; lovely weekend (8/5/2022) with friends ruined; no clarification from management so far (10/5/2022) despite several calls and voicemails. Total incompetence of the manager, that also tried to put the blame through an employee on the cleaning lady, the only helpful person there - so shameful- as she avoided to meet us in person in the afternoon. Moreover, the room is overpriced as: there are too few towels there is no hearing you can regulate the mugs are dirty there is mould on the windows and too rumor from the road shower's drain is not working properly so you must stop halfway to prevent the room from being floaded Better sleeping in your car than there. Last but not least they said we didn’t have a reservation when we arrived….!

My Wife, Daughter and I were looking for somewhere to have lunch and our usual go to place was closed today and we came across the Black Horse Hotel. We are so glad we did! The food was absolutely beautiful and the prices are really reasonable, if your wanting proper Yorkshire portions then I highly recommend visiting this pub. The staff were very welcoming and happy to help with anything we wanted to know, all in all it was a 10/10 experience and we will definitely be returning again another day.

Lovely impromptu lunch today on a visit to sunny Otley. We like a drive out to Otley and usually call for a drink to another hostellery which was closed today. Walking down from the market we decided to call in here and are so glad we did. We had the fish goujon sandwiches which were freshly made in top quality bloomer bread and were totally delicious, served with a good helping of green leaf salad. We had 2 drinks also delicious, and prices are very competitive and good value. The only fault was the very wobbly table which I had to stabilise with a beer mat, and the very worn upholstery on the chairs, but this definitely won't put us off returning next time we are in Otley.
